听力原文:W: What do you do for a living, Frank?
M: I am an aerospace engineer. I have been working for NASA for over fifteen years.
W: Wow, that sounds fascinating. What projects have you been involved in?
M: Well, until recently, I was heavily involved in the Cassini mission. I don't know if you're familiar with it or not. It's one of NASA's most expensive and ambitious projects. We are sending a probe to explore Saturn and its moons.
W: That sounds really interesting. Are you in any way involved in the construction of the international space station?
M: Actually, that's what I'm working on now. I'm currently a technical liaison between NASA and several European space agencies. It's an interesting job, but it can be a bit too much at times. The international space station is probably the largest international venture ever attempted, and I am constantly dealing with technical difficulties, budget problems, and delays. It's not easy coordinating the efforts of all those countries. I have been to Europe three times in the last month, and I have to go to Kazakhstan next week.
W: And I understand there's some controversy surrounding the space station. Don't some people worry that NASA is spending too much money on the project?
M: Many experts have complained that the project has grown out of control and become far too expensive. But I look at it as more than a space station; I believe it's helping to foster international scientific cooperation. It's nice to see the scientists of the world working together to create a stepping-stone to the future.

听力原文: I'll still be working, but things will be different. With any luck, I'll be earning more money, but the most important thing will be the job itself and how interesting it is. I mean, I hope I'll be able to choose the kind job I do and who I work for. Of course, I'd like to have more money, and more authority than I have now, but I don't think that's the only thing in life. What I really want is... to be more independent than I am now... to have more control over my own life. Perhaps open a small restaurant, or write a book or something like that. I'm not really sure if I'll ever have children or even if I want to be married. It all depends. Of course, if I meet the right person, anything could happen! But I won't feel that my life is empty and meaningless if I'm still living alone ten years or even twenty years from now. Not at all! My mother is always saying, "There's nothing like a good relationship!" But I'm not so sure. There's nothing worse than a really bad one, either!

听力原文:W: Well George, you can approach my desk now. (19) I have done an appraisal of your application to be my apprentice, and I have a few questions for you. (20) (21) You don't seem to have any apparent experience in working with large aquatic appliances. You do know that the aquariums I clean and make are not for goldfish or restaurant shelves, right?
M: What else can be put in them?
W: They put sharks, whales, and seals in them. Well, I applaud your effort and appreciate your coming across town for this interview, (20) but you don't have the experience or aptitude that is usually required for this type of apprenticeship.
M: I am very appreciative of your assessment of my qualifications, Madam. But I'd like to appeal, to you to give me a chance. (19) I know I know nothing about aquariums. I come from the desert and that's why I came to California to work with water. (19) And I know you will approve of determination. I have that and hope you could give me a try.
W: Okay George, (22) I'll take a risk and give it a try. But you are up for three-month probation. We' 11 take a look at how you're doing in these three months and make the final decision.
M: Thank you, Madam! You won't be disappointed!

Dear Mr. Richardson,
I am writing to complain the heating system of the apartment which I rent from you, My name is Jasmine and I rent this apartment four months ago, the contract No. is YJ2005225.
Actually, the heating system has stopped working for about two weeks and I phoned your employee one week ago. Your employee promised me that he would repair the system within three days.
However, seven days have passed and no one came to my apartment to fix the heating system up. It makes me in big trouble now. You see the weather is terrible and the temperature is becoming increasingly lower from now on. I have to move to my classmate's apartment and this causes a huge inconvenience to both of us.
I would be appreciated if your employee could fix the heating system for me as soon as possible.
From next week, I will enjoy my Christmas holiday and I can have seven days off. So, would you mind telling me when your employee will come to my apartment so that I can stay at home and wait for you.
I am looking forward to your prompt response. Thanks!
Yours Sincerely,
Jasmine
