听力原文: Mary did not like getting up early in the morning. If her sister did not wake her, she would be late often for her classes. One day a lecture was going to be given By a famous artist at nine o'clock. Her sister and brother-in-law were away. She set her alarm for half past seven. This should give her plenty of time to get ready and arrive early enough for a good seat. She was determined to be there in time. She would never forgive herself for missing the lecture. She had been admiring the artist's work since she was a child.

The next morning, she slept through the alarm and woke up at half past eight. She was not used to rushing and everything went wrong. At last, she was ready, and rushed out to catch a bus. She jumped on the first one. She looked at her watch, but it was not there. She must have forgotten to put it on in her rush. When she arrived at the university, she hurried to the lecture hall. She was astonished to find that the doors were locked. She looked round to find someone, and saw a clock which said half past seven, "I can't understand it!" she cried out. "Nobody's here and the clock is slow!" Then she suddenly remembered. Her alarm clock had stopped the day before and she must have forgotten to reset the hands. "This is the first time I'll hear the beginning of a lecture," she said to herself, laughing.

听力原文: As expected, the U.S. Federal Reserve has cut interest rates for the fifth time this year to try to avoid a recession in the world's largest economy. The Fed cut rates by a half percent, to four percent, its lowest level in seven years. In a statement, the Central Bank said further cuts are likely as the economy remains weak. Many economists think monetary authorities will continue to cut rates in the months ahead to revive economic growth, which has slowed considerably. Figures released Monday showed industrial production fell in April for the seventh consecutive month-the longest stretch signs the economy is starting to re-bound since the recession year of 1982. Other reports show the economy lost more jobs in April than at any time in the past decade. Still, other market-watchers say the Central Bank may hold off on further rate cuts amid signs the economy is starting to rebound. Reports show consumer confidence and retail sales are rising. Consumer spending makes up two-thirds of U. S. economic growth. The stock market is expected to rebound further in the days ahead if the Federal Open Market Committee keeps cutting interest rates, as companies and consumers benefit from lower borrowing costs.

The US Federal Reserve has cut rates by half percent, to _______ percent, its lowest in seven years.

A.five

B.four

C.seven

D.six

They flew to London and arrived at their hotel late one evening. They expected that they would have to go to bed hungry, because in that small inn in New Jersey no meals were served after seven. They were therefore surprised when the man who received them in the hall asked whether they would ask dinner there that night.

"Are you still serving dinner?" asked Mr. Smith.

"Yes, certainly, sir," answered the man. "We serve it until half past nine."

"What are the times of meals then?" asked Mr. Smith.

"Well, Sir," answered the man, "We serve breakfast from seven to half past eleven in the morning, lunch from twelve to three in the afternoon, tea from four to five and dinner, from six to half past nine."

"But that hardly leaves any time for us to see the sights of London." Said Mrs. Smith.

听力原文:M:Christine, you're not only an eighteen year old, studying for your A levels; yo
u're also a very successful businesswoman. How do you manage to combine these two? Perhaps you could tell me about a typical day?

W: Sure. I usually get up about five o'clock. I try to get to the office for seven and then design jewellery for an hour and a half until it's time to dash off to school which starts at nine.

M: And then you're at school all day?

W:No, not at all. When the others go off for lunch, I go back to the office for another hour's work.

M: What time do you finish school?

W:Half past four.

M: What do you do then?

W: It's back to the office until about nine.

M: So when do you find time to study?

W: After that. I usually do about three hours' revision before I go to bed at midnight.

M:What are you going to do when you finish school?

W: I plan to do business studies at Birmingham University.

M: Do you really need to?

W: Er, I expect it'll be a little strange to learn the theory after having been involved in the practical side since I was thirteen.

M: What do your school friends think of this?

W: They've always thought I was a little different. They were interested in music, I was interested in business and politics.

M: Do you have time for a social life?

W: Yes, when I do go out, I'm more interested in what people are wearing than enjoying myself. I never turn off!

What does the woman do?

A.She's a university student majoring in business.

B.She works as a professional jewelry designer.

C.She's a high school student working part-time.

D.She's attending a night school course.
