听力原文: (35) In a class I teach for adults, I recently did the "unpardonable". I gave the class homework ! (32) The assignment was "to go to someone you love within the next week and tell them you love them. It has to be someone you have never said those words to before or at least haven't shared those words with for a long time."

Now that doesn't sound like a very tough assignment, until you stop to realize that (33) most of the men were over 35 and were raised in the generation of men that were taught that showing feelings or crying was just not done.

At the beginning of our next class, I asked if someone wanted to share what happened when they told someone they loved them. I fully expected one of the women to volunteer, as was usually the case, but on this evening one of the men raised his hand. It was James.

He said that he was quite angry with the assignment. He didn't feel that he had anyone to say those words to, and besides, it was a total private thing. But when he was driving home, he thought it over and found that the assignment was exactly what he needed. (34) Five years ago, he had a fierce quarrel with his father and really never resolved it since that time. They avoided seeing each other unless they absolutely had to at Christmas or other family gatherings. But even then, they never spoke to each other. So James decided to finish the assignment. When he got home, he convinced himself to tell his father he loved him. Both of them were moved to tears.

(33)

A.Spend some time with people who you love.

B.Say "I lore you" to people you love.

C.Show love to people you love by buying flower.

D.Help people who you love.

In the first place, since this is a composition class, 1 expect my students to follow certain rules of formality.

Unfortunately, students today dislike having to follow rules of any kind, especially those which they may feel to be unnecessary. For example, I ask that each of your papers be typed and centered on the paper correctly. I count off points for various kinds of mistakes. A misspelled word will cost you 5 points. You've lost 25 points if you've misspelled five words. I do not accept late papers. I expect you to read each assignment. To make certain that you have read the assignment, I will give you a short unannounced quiz from time to time. This class meets on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays.

Your assignment for Wednesday is to read Hemingway's short story on page 55. Friday will be the last class day of this week, so you can write a short in-class theme for me then. That's all for today. I'll see you on Wednesday.

Assignment: Read “Students’ practices and abilitie...

Assignment: Read “Students’ practices and abilities for writing from sources in English at universities in China” by Cumming et al (2018), and write a summary of its thesis and main points. Your summary should be at least one paragraph long (8 -10 lines) and no more than one page. You CANNOT plagiarize from the abstract on the first page or any part of the paper. Summary: a concise restatement of a reading’s main ideas. When composing a summary . . . Do . . . Don’t . . . Use your OWN words. It may be necessary at times to quote the author if you want to capture a particular phrase or tone from the original, but your summary should be mostly in your own words. Rely heavily on quotations. Borrow language directly from the text without enclosing it in quotation marks. At some point (usually either in the beginning or the end of your summary) offer a direct statement of the author’s thesis or main idea in your own words. Include a summary of the supporting ideas the author uses to support his or her main idea. Offer your opinions, analyses, or judgments of the author’s ideas or effectiveness. This can be tricky to avoid—even a statement like “Ulreich beautifully describes . . .” involves your opinion that his description is beautiful. Provide context for your summary by offering the full name of the author and the full title of the text in the first or second sentence. Then, refer to the author throughout the rest of the summary by his or her last name (Since this article has more than three authors, Cumming et al should be used to address the authors). Write as if your reader is already familiar with the text. Use effective verbs that characterize an author’s rhetorical moves: argues, claims, stresses, concedes, admits, examines, questions, analyzes, points out, reasons, compares, refutes, rejects, emphasizes, confirms. Offer some variation in your verbs. If the author is making lots of claims, don’t use the verb claim over and over. Offer some variation through synonyms: claims, posits, argues, asserts, believes, comments, contends, notes, thinks, notes, writes, suggests. Don’t use verbs that indicate a direct statement by the author unless followed by a direct statement. For example, don’t say that the author “states that . . .” when you are only inferring something from his or her remarks. Reserve verbs like states for direct quotes. Don’t use the verb quotes unless the author is quoting someone else. In other words, don’t say “Al Gore quotes that he could have won the nomination.” Reserve the verb quotes for when Al Gore is quoting someone else in the text: “Al Gore quotes Leo Tolstoy, saying that ‘All happy families are alike.’” Compose your summary in the present tense. Switch tenses or use the past tense unless the text itself refers to something that happened in the past. For example, “According to Stevenson, research done in the early 1970’s erred (past) because it ignored women. Because of this she argues (present) that it should be reassessed.” Grading: When grading your summaries, I will pay attention to the following: your ability to adhere to the conventions above; organization; your understanding of the article’s thesis and main ideas; grammar and spelling. Since this is a short assignment (less than one page), I will expect an “A” summary to be free of grammatical and spelling errors. After all, you will likely have less than ten sentences to edit.

听力原文:[Student] Excuse me, Professor Carter. May I speak to you for a minute?

[Professor] Sure. Come in.

[Student] I'm Jenniffer. I'm taking your course in Population Studies.

[Professor] Right. Well, Jenniffer, how can I help you?

[Student] I'm... having a bit of trouble with the second assignment, and it's due in twelve days.

[Professor] What sort of trouble are you having? Is the assignment question a problem?

[Student] Well, it's not about the question itself. I'm having been having... trouble getting hold of the books. I've been to the library several times, and all the books are out.

[Professor] Sounds like you should have started borrowing books a bit earlier.

[Student] Well, I had a really big assignment due in for another course, and I've been spending all my time on that, and I thought...

[Professor] You might get an extension of time to finish your assignment for me?

[Student] If that's possible, but I don't know...

[Professor] Well, yes, it is possible, but extensions are normally given only for medical or compassionate reasons, otherwise it's really a question of organizing your study, and we don't like giving extensions to students who simply didn't plan their work properly. What did you get for your first assignment?

[Student] I got eighty-seven per cent.

[Professor] Mmm, yes, you did very well indeed, so obviously you can produce good work.

[Student] I don't think I'll need too much extra time, as long as I can get a hold of some of the important references.

[Professor] Well, since you did so well in your first assignment, I'm prepared to give you an extra two weeks for this one, so that'll mean you'll need to submit it about a month from now.

[Student] Thank you.

[Professor] Now, what about the reading materials? Have you checked out the journal articles in the list?

[Student] Umm, no, not yet, there were about twenty of them, and I wasn't sure which ones would be most useful or important.

[Professor] Well, they're all useful, but I don't expect anyone to read them all, because a number of them deal with the same issues. Let me give you some suggestions. The article by Anderson and Hawker is really worth reading.

[Student] Right, I'll read that one.

[Professor] You should also read the article by Jackson, but just look at the part on the research methodology, how they did it.

[Student] OK... Jackson, got that...

[Professor] And if you have time, the one by Roberts says very relevant things, although it's not essential.

[Student] So, OK, if it's useful, I'll try and read that one...

[Professor] Now, the one by Morris. I wouldn't bother with that at this stage, if I were you.

[Student] OK, I won't bother with Morris. Oh, now, someone told me the article by Cooper is important.

[Professor] Well, yes, in a way, but just look at the last part, where he discusses the research results. And lastly, there's Forster--I can't think why I included that one. It's not bad and could be of some help, but not that much. OK. Do you have any more questions?

[Student] No, thank you very much. Professor Carter.

[Professor] You are welcome.

Narrator Now get ready to answer some questions. You may use your notes to help you answer.

1. Why does the student want to talk with the professor?

2. Based one the student's statements, why has she not started the assignment?

3. What are the reasonable excuses for extensions?

4. In the conversation, the professor gives the student some suggestions about the journal articles. Whose articles must be read and whose articles can be read in part. Check the correct box for each person.

Narrator Listen again to a part of the conversation. Then answer the question.

[Student] Well, it's not about the question itself. I'm having been having... trouble getting hold of the books. I've been to the library several times, and all the books are out.

[Professor] Sounds lik

A.Because he cannot finish her assignment as scheduled.

B.Because he could not get the books she need.

C.Because she cannot fully understand the assignment.

D.Because she has difficulty understanding the reading materials.
