Many people hope that the whole world will one day speak a common language. Over the Years, people have made up new languages with this aim. At least six hundred languages have been developed in the search for a language which all human beings would be able to speak. The most famous one, Esperanto (世界语) , was the idea of Ludwig Zamenhof, a doctor in Warsaw. He published a book about his new language in 1887.
To encourage people to learn the Language, he made it as simple as possible.
Esperanto has never been accepted as an official world language, but it has been suggested as an auxiliary language. By 1950 it had been taught to one and a half million speakers, and it was spoken in six hundred schools. Today Esperanto is spoken by about eight million people, and more than one hundred newspapers and magazines in the language are published regularly throughout the world. Thousands of books have been written in Esperanto, including those translated from other languages.
Today the need for a new auxiliary language like Esperanto seems less obvious. Throughout this century English has grown more and more important. It has become a second language for many millions of people. The fact that more are learning English shows that the use of English is still growing worldwide. No one would deny the usefulness of world language, but not many people think that Esperanto is likely to play such a role.

听力原文: Good morning, students. I hope you have been able to read the two books about speech and hearing problems that I put on the list. Today's lecture deals with the presence of the unusually large deaf population that existed on the Massachusetts island Martha's Vine-yard for about three centuries. From the settlement of the island in the 1640s to the 20th century, the people there, who were descended from only 25 or 30 original families, married mainly other residents of the island. They formed a highly inbred group, producing an excellent example of the genetic patterns for the inheritance of deafness. Indeed in the late 1800 one out of every 25 people in one village on the island was born deaf and the island as a whole had a deafness rate at least 17 times greater than that of the rest of the United States. Even Alexander Graham Bell, the inventor of the tele- phone and a prominent researcher into hearing loss, visited Martha's Vineyard to study the population. But because of the principles of genetics a deaf parent did not always have deaf children. In the 20th century, the local population has mixed the people off the island and the rate of deafness has fallen.
(23)
A.A large number of its residents were deaf.
B.It was settled more than 300 years ago.
C.Each family living there had many children.
D.Alexander Graham Bell visited there.
Upon learning this news, Nancy and I had to decide whether as private citizens we would keep this a private matter or whether we would make this news known in a public way.
In the past Nancy suffered from breast cancer and I had my cancer surgeries. We found through our open disclosures we were able to raise public awareness. We were happy that as a result many more people underwent testing.
They were treated in early stages and able to return to normal, healthy lives.
So now, we feel it is important to share it with you. In opening our hearts, we hope this might promote greater awareness of this condition. Perhaps it will encourage a clearer understanding of the individuals and families who are affected by it.
At the moment I feel just fine. I intend to live the remainder of the years God gives me on this earth doing the things I have always done. I will continue to share life's journey with my beloved Nancy and my family. I plan to enjoy the great outdoors and stay in touch with my friends and supporters.

Many factors contribute to your health. A well-balanced diet plays an important role. The amount and type of exercise you get is another factor. Your living environment and the amount of stress you are under is yet another. But scientists studying senescence (衰老)want to know: Why do people grow old? They hope that by examining the ageing process on a cellular level medical science may be able to extend the length of life.
There is nothing to be afraid of as old age approaches. Many consider the later portions of life to be the best time for living. Physical activity may lessen, but often you gain a broader understanding of yourself and the world.
What we consider old age now may only be middle-aged some day soon. Who knows, with so many advances in medical science happening so quickly, life spans may one day be measured in centuries, rather than in years!
In order to live longer, we should postpone the process of aging.
A.Right
B.Wrong
C.Not mentioned
听力原文: Muslims are more likely than other religious minorities to be unemployed and live in poor housing in the most deprived parts of England, according to a government study Monday.
Half of English Muslims over the age of 25 are not involved in the formal labor market and a third live in the most deprived areas of the country, according to the study commissioned by the government.
Muslims are also particularly vulnerable to long-term illness and experience poor levels of education, said the researchers from the universities of Derby, Warwick, Birmingham and Oxford.
"Taking the Muslim population as a whole, they face some of the most acute conditions of multiple deprivation," the report said.
The report said members of the Muslim, Sikh and Hindu communities were likely to remain concentrated in the same areas because families want to stay close together and many prefer to live near their places of worship.
A government spokeswoman said the academics had reviewed a variety of data, including information from the 2001 national census.
The government will use the study in its work to encourage equal opportunities for members of all religious communities, the spokeswoman said.
Sir Iqbal Sacranie, secretary-general of the Muslim Council of Britain, said the research showed the poverty and other deep-seated problems that have contributed to the marginalization and disaffection felt among many young Muslims.
"We hope that this report serves to highlight the need to develop policies that are able to reach into these communities and fulfill their needs," Sacranie said.
According to the passage, how many universities took part in the study?
A.Three.
B.Four.
C.Five.
D.Two.
SECTION B PASSAGES
Directions: In this section, you will hear several passages. Listen to the passages carefully and then answer the questions that follow.
听力原文: In the past 20 years, scientists have learned a great deal about sleep and dreams. They have discovered, for example, that sleep and dreams affect the way people feel. A good night's sleep, generally, makes a person happier in the morning.
Dreams also have a strong effect on the moods of people. However, who appears in a dream is more important than what happens. Every person has a special dream character. If this special character appears in dreams, people are happier after sleeping. If there are many people in one's dreams, this has a good effect. A person will wake up happier.
The moods of people affect their performance throughout the day. The level of one's moods rises and fails during the day. The less sleepy people are, the better they perform. And, usually they are more friendly, more aggressive, and more clear-thinking. Someday, scientists hope to be able to manipulate sleep in order to control the way people feel and perform.
What is the passage mainly about?
A.Sleep and dreams.
B.The importance of dreams.
C.The amount of dreams.
D.Moods and attitudes.
