听力原文: A baby spends the first year of life learning to listen. A newborn child comes equipped with a finely tuned pair of ears, but he doesn't yet know how to use them. A buzz of meaningless noise surrounds him. No one sound means more than any other. Unlike his ears, the hearing center of his brains is still immature. As the baby grows, two things happen. First, he becomes better at picking out certain sounds. Second, he begins to remember them.

This development is easy to see. If you make a loud sound near a one-day-old baby's head, you will not see any reaction. Only a check on his pulse or breathing rate will show a change. But just two weeks later, the same noise will make him jerk. He may even turn his head toward you, now the human voice means something to him. If he hears another baby crying, he may cry. By his fourth to sixth week, sounds like the doorbell or the closing of a door no longer surprise him.

What is actually happening is that he is starting to learn to listen. He can select certain sounds and memorize them. When he hears that sound a-gain, he can match it with the one he has heard before. These skills are basic to all learning.

At the same time these early hearing and language skills get under way, the child begins to practice making sounds. His first sounds are the discomfort sounds. These sounds are heard when he is not quiet or sleeping. These sounds mean nothing to him yet. To his mother they say he is wet, uncomfortable, or hungry.

Within the baby' s first month, another sound appears: the comfort sounds. These are different from the discomfort sounds. As the child grows, his comfort sounds will use more of the vowels and consonants and rhythms which he will later use. These sounds will come together to form. the first word. This special event will be long remembered by the proud parents.

Why does a newborn baby have to spend the first year of his life learning to listen?

A.Because he likes learning.

B.Because his hearing center is still immature.

C.Because his ears are immature.

D.Because he wants to know how to use his ears.

Does an unborn baby know his mother's voice? Psychology professor Anthony DeCasper advised
an ingenious experiment to find out. He placed padded earphones over a newborn's ears and gave him a bottle nipple attached to a closed rubber tube. Changes in pressure in the tube switched channels on a tape recorder. If the baby paused extra long between bursts of sucking, he heard on channel; if he paused shorter than average, he heard the other. The baby now had the ability, in effect, to change channels.

DeCasper found that newborns choose the recording of their mother's voice over that of another woman's. The baby, however, has no innate interest in his father's voice, which is heard in the womb only from time to time, while the mother's voice is ever present. Within two weeks after birth, however, the baby can recognize Dad's voice too.

A newborn is even attuned to the cadence and rhythm of his native language. In a French study using a setup similar to DeCasper's, French babies given the choice between French and Russian words responded more to the sound of French.

Brian Satt, a research specialist in clinical psychology, has parents sing a lullaby-like "womb song" to their babies. The unborn baby often develops a specific, consistent movement pattern when its song is sung. According to Salt, most parents can calm a fussy newborn with the song most of the time, which is a prize worth more than rubies to a new parent.

He is roused by a heavy jolt. His mother has tripped and fallen heavily on one hip. He is much too well cushioned to experience any injury, but her pain and the fear that she may have hurt him floods both their bodies with adrenaline and other stress-related hormones. He cries and kicks vigorously, a cry never heard because there is no air to make sound. As she recovers the stress hormones ebb away, and he calms down too.

Which of the following is NOT mentioned about the unborn baby in the passage?

A.An unborn, baby can occasionally hear his father's voice.

B.De Casper's approach proved absolutely effective in a French experiment.

C.An unborn baby is able to identify the tone and rhythm of his native language.

D.Parents are able to soothe a fussy newly-born baby.

听力原文: One of the first questions anybody asks about a newborn is, "What is the baby's name?" Faced with this tiny pink newborn, we want to put a name to it; as if by doing so, we welcome it to this world of individuals. We always name the things we love; a small child will give names to even his tiniest toys, or his well-chewed blanket. And the difference between "Blankie" and the blanket is an entire personality.

There are many ways to choose a name for a baby. One of the most common is to use an old family name. If the family tie is strong enough, parents are often willing to overlook an unpleasant feeling or meaning. If all the men for five generations have been named Brendan, who are you to complain that the name means "smelly hair?"

But inspiration need not be limited to the family tree. Pick an attribute; pick the name of the Italian city where the baby was born. Name the baby after your favorite poet, or an interesting saint.

It can be difficult to find the perfect name for your baby, but the beauty of the process is this: by the time the baby is a few months old, his personality erases all other associations the name may hold. The evil snake, or the much loved poet, fades away; and the name becomes quite simply the name of your child; and you will have made the right choice.

What do we often do with the things we love?

A.Ask for their names.

B.Name babies after them.

C.Put down their names.

D.Choose names for them.
