Task 1
Directions: After reading the following passage, you will find 5 questions or unfinished statements, numbered 36 through 40. For each question or statement there are 4 choices marked A, B, C, and D. You should make the correct choice.
Peering into the 21st century, authorities on the future see extraordinary changed. New scientific breakthroughs will allow machines to take on more tasks that human brain has traditionally done.
Computers, which once only remembered data, will make more decisions. Machines that today tell doctors what symptoms the patients have may soon be recommending whether or not to perform. surgery as well. Others will design new buildings after questioning buyers about their preferences. Increasingly, human thought processes and even values are being programmed into computers, according to Earl Joseph, president of a consulting firm. "Imagine machines which are smarter and more intelligent than humans and, with their embedded (植入的) initiative, can't wait to tell you about it," he says.
In everyday life, the future will mean talking directly to computers without pushing buttons. Just tell a toaster, stove or other kitchen device what to do, and it will hear the message. The oven may even decide itself how long to cook the roast. Tell the television, "I want to watch Channel 12 at 8 p.m., but store the show for next week," and the job will be done.
The computer will talk back, too. Already some soft-drink machines complain loudly if you don't deposit enough cash. At home, a bedside machine may someday tell you, "You forgot to turn off the basement light."
Away from home, the automobile of the future will think for itself. Scientists predict that drivers will feed destinations into a computer that will then explain what route to take and even tell where parking spaces are available. A city's traffic-control system might instruct the car's computer how fast to go in heavy traffic and whether to change lanes.
This passage mainly discusses ______.
A.the history of computers
B.the different functions of computers
C.the computer in the 21st century
D.scientific breakthroughs in the 21st century
Passage Three
Did you know that a turtle can lay twelve eggs in one minute? A large sea turtle lays around 150 eggs at a time. She lays all these eggs in just a few minutes.
Large sea turtles live in the warm seas of the world. Except for when they lay their eggs, they spend their whole lives in water. When it is time to lay their eggs, the females swim to land. They usually return to the place where they themselves were born. How they find their way back there is a mystery.
When they reach shore, the big, heavy turtles crawl slowly up to the high water mark. Using their flippers, they pull themselves along the sand. They struggle like mountain climbers to attain their goal. When they finally reach dry sand, they rest before beginning the difficult task of laying eggs.
The turtles lay the eggs in deep holes and cover them with warm sand. The sand protects the eggs from harm. Then the females leave them. After a few weeks, if you happened to be walking along the beach, you might see the sand begin to shake in one spot. Then you would see tidy black balls coming out of the sand. The tidy heads of baby turtles!
Baby turtles have a build-in sense of direction. As soon as they are hatched, they head for the water. Once the babies swim out to sea, they don't touch shore again until it is time for them to lay their own eggs.

Task 2
Directions: This task is the same as Task 1. The 5 questions or unfinished statements are numbered 41 through 45.
The business cycle is composed of many phases and one of them is the expansion phase. This phase is a two-fold one, including recovery and prosperity.
During the recovery period there is an ever-growing expansion of existing equipment. And new facilities for production are created. More businesses are created and older ones expanded. Improvements of serious kinds are made. There is an ever increasingly positive view about the future of economic growth. Much capital is invested in machinery or "heavy" industry. More labor is employed. More raw materials are required.
As more parts of the economy develop, other parts are affected. For example, the expansion in automobiles results in an expansion of the steel and rubber industries. Roads are required; thus the cement and machinery industries are activated. Demand for labor and materials results in greater prosperity for workers and suppliers of raw materials. This increases the amount of goods bought and sold. Thus prosperity develops among the various parts of the population.
This prosperity period may continue to rise without an obvious end. However, a time comes when this phase reaches a peak and stops going upwards. This is the end of the expansion phase.
Which of the following does NOT happen in economic recovery?
A.The expansion of existing facilities.
B.The creation of new business.
C.The disappearance of old business.
D.The increase of optimism about the future of economy.

Thousands of years ago, traveling was very hard. There were no roads and no cars. People traveled on rivers and lakes. They used logs, either one at a time, or tied together.
People then began to use animals to pull very heavy loads. Some people put rollers under a load, and this was the first use of the wheel. The wheel was the most important invention in transportation.
The need to transport many people at one time led to the use of the stagecoach. It's a horse-drawn public vehicle carrying passengers along a regular route. The stagecoach was pulled by four to six horses. It often rode through the night with a change of a driver.
But people wanted a faster and easier way of traveling. The "horseless carriage" of automobile was invented in 1892. Life became more pleasant. Roads were built. Farmers were able to travel to cities. City people were able to get fresh fruits and vegetables. People traveled to many places for fun.
The main idea of the first paragraph is that ______.
A.people traveled on lakes thousands of years ago
B.people used logs thousands of years ago
C.traveling was hard thousands of years ago
D.there were no roads and cars thousands of years ago
