听力原文: Mark Twain travelled quite a lot. Usually financial circumstances forced him to. He was born in Florida in 1835, and moved to Hannibal, Missouri with his family when he was about four years old. Most people think he was born in Hannibal. But that isn't true. After his father died when he was about twelve, Twain worked in Hannibal for a short time and then left, so that he could earn more money. He worked for a while as a typesetter. And then he got a job as a fiver pilot on the Mississippi.Twain loved this job and many of his books show it. The river job didn't last, however, because of the outbreak of the Civil War. Twain was in the confederate army for just two weeks. And then he and his whole company went west to get away from the war and the army. In the west, he became a successful writer. Once that happened Twain travelled around the country giving lectures and earning enough money to go to Europe. Twain didn't travel much in the last ten years of his life and he didn't publish much. Like many other popular writers, Twain got much material for his writing from the wealth of his own experiences.

2. Gifts of the magi After Jesus was born in Bethlehem in the territory of Judea during the rule of King Herod, magi came from the east to Jerusalem. They asked, “Where is the newborn king of the Jews? We’ve seen his star in the east, and we’ve come to honor him.” When King Herod heard this, he was troubled, and everyone in Jerusalem was troubled with him. He gathered all the chief priests and the legal experts and asked them where the Christ was to be born. They said, “In Bethlehem of Judea, for this is what the prophet wrote: You, Bethlehem, land of Judah, by no means are you least among the rulers of Judah, because from you will come one who governs, who will shepherd my people Israel.” Then Herod secretly called for the magi and found out from them the time when the star had first appeared. He sent them to Bethlehem, saying, “Go and search carefully for the child. When you’ve found him, report to me so that I too may go and honor him.” When they heard the king, they went; and look, the star they had seen in the east went ahead of them until it stood over the place where the child was. When they saw the star, they were filled with joy. They entered the house and saw the child with Mary his mother. Falling to their knees, they honored him. Then they opened their treasure chests and presented him with gifts of gold, frankincense, and myrrh. Because they were warned in a dream not to return to Herod, they went back to their own country by another route. 3. What can be inferred from the passage?
A、Everyone in Jerusalem was troubled with King Herod.
B、Magi came from the west to Jerusalem.
C、The prophet was unreliable.
D、Magi was a threat to King Herod.
A large number of American presidents had experiences in the army. The two best known were Ulysses Grant and Dwight Eisenhower. Grant was a general in the American Civil War and Eisenhower was a hero in the Second World War. It happened that they graduated from the same school— West Point Military Academy (西点军校). One may be surprised to learn that both of them did not do well in the school. Eisenhower, for example, was once fined because he broke the roles of the school.
The jobs of the US president are tiring. He must keep an eye on anything important which happens both at home and abroad. Every day, a lot of work waits for him to do and he has to make many important decisions. When Franklin Roosevelt was a child, he was once brought to visit President Taft. The old president said to him, "When you grow up you should not be the president. It's a tiring job."
According to the passage, who regarded the jobs of the US president as tiring ones?
A.Grant.
B.Taft.
C.Eisenhower.
D.Roosevelt.
(5) Bush hardly mentions Harvard today. He loathed what he saw as the university's liberal, intellectually pretentious atmosphere. On weekends at the home of his aunt Nancy Ellis, who lived in Boston, Bush railed against the "smugness" of Cambridge. He pined to get back to Texas. While Bush's classmates headed for Wall Street, Bush went to look for a job in the oil Patch, again following his father whose portrait hangs in Midland's Petroleum Hall of Fame.
