听力原文： Hotels today are quite different from those of the past. People who stay in them are generally traveling for business, or they are touring or on vacation. So hotels are designed mainly to meet the needs of one of these two groups of people. Hotels designed for business people are known as commercial, or transient hotels. Hotels for people on vacation are called vacation, or resort hotels.
Transient hotels are usually located in the business section of a town, while resort hotels may be at the seashore, on a mountain lake, or in the desert.
In addition to these two main types, there is a third type of hotel, called a residential hotel. This is designed to meet the needs of people who want to live in a hotel.
Inns and hotels arc located in nearly every population center in the world. In the United States alone there are a bout thirty thousand. Some hotels have as few as ten rooms, others have several hundred. People who prefer camping to staying in hotels will have a hard time in American cities, because most of them don't have campgrounds nearby. You can camp in state and national parks, though, which generally have facilities for both tents and trailers.

There were inns throughout the ancient civilized world, strategically placed to accommodate merchants, military personnel, government officials and others whose work forced them to travel. Traveling for pleasure was almost unheard of. During the early Middle Ages, travel was infrequent and unsafe.

The first hotels in North America Were Atlantic seaport inns and converted farmhouses along stagecoach (马车) routes. When canals and railroads were built along the rights-of-way. As cities grew, new hotels were constructed in the business centers and theater districts. By 1,800 the United States already had the largest hotels in the world, and this trend toward large size continued into the 20th century. As travel for pleasure gained popularity in Europe, luxury and resort hotels were built in many countries. The Savoy Hotel in London set new standards of luxury when it opened in 1889 by having its own electricity, theater, private chapel (小教堂) , laundry, and printed press. The hotel was managed by Cesar Ritz, who opened his own luxury hotel in Paris in 1898. The standards set by the Savoy and the Ritz have been imitated by hotels around the world.
