The age of space science began less than thirty years ago. But already people have mad

e great discoveries and have done exciting things. They have walked in space, visited the moon, and lived in space laboratories for long periods of time. Some scientists are now working on ways to make it possible for people to live on other planets. They are trying to solve problems of living in space, even though they don’t yet know what all of the problems will be. For example, they don’t’ yet know what problems people would have if they loved being weightless for several years.

If you were a space traveler you might have to spend several months, or even years, in a spaceship. While you were in the ship you wouldn’t live as you usually do. You might have to find new ways to spend your time. Your body would have to adjust to different conditions. And you would have some problems that you never think about here on earth. For example, you would have to have a huge supply of food with you because you can’t go to the supermarket when you’re halfway to another planet. You also would need fresh water and a way to get rid of waste. In fact, there would be many problems to solve in order to live in space.

1. This passage tells us that__________.

A. if you were a space traveler, you had to live in space for some time

B. scientists are trying to solve problems of living in space

C. while you were in the ship you wouldn’t live as you usually do

D. scientists are finding ways to make people live on other planets

2. The sentence “what problems people would have if they loved being weightless” (Para. 1) is probably closest in meaning to ________.

A. people who were light had many problems

B. many problems people would face in space

C. many people who loved to be very light

D. weightless people who loved to have problems

3. The phrase “a huge supple of food” (Para.2) means ________.

A. a huge piece of food

B. the food that is largely supplied on the market

C. a large amount of food

D. the food at the supermarket

4. While you were in the spaceship, you would NOT _______.

A. need fresh water and a way to get rid of waste

B. have some unusual problems

C. go to the supermarket when you were halfway to another planet

D. find new ways to spend your time

5. It can be concluded from the passage that _________.

A. life in space was interesting and exciting

B. if you were a space traveler, you had to stay in space

C. there would be many problems if you wanted to live in space

D. it was easy to enjoy oneself in space

Visitors from space may have landed on our planet dozens, even hundreds of times during th
e long, empty ages while Man was still a dream of the distant future. Indeed, they could have landed on 90 percent of the earth as recently as two or three hundred years ago, and we could never have heard of it. If one searches through old newspapers and local records, one can find many reports of strange incidents that could be interpreted as visits from outer space. A stimulating writer, Charles Fort, has made a collection of UFO sighting in his book! One is tempted to believe them more than any modern reports, for the simple reason that they happened long before anyone had ever thought of space travel. Yet at the same time, one can't take them too seriously, for before scientific education was widespread, even sightings of meteors, comets, auroras, and so on, gave rise to the most incredible stories, as they still do today.

According to the passage, visitors from space may have landed on the earth ______.

A.long before man had dreamed of it

B.long before there were human beings

C.in the last few hundred years

D.after the space age began

第8题
With a tremendous roar from its rocket engine, the satellite is sent up into the sky. Minu
tes later, at an altitude of 300 miles, this tiny electronic moon begins to orbit about the earth. Its radio begins to transmit a staggering amount of information about the satellite's orbital path, the amount of radiation it detects, and the presence of meteorites. Information of all kinds races back to the earth. No human being could possibly copy down all these facts, much less remember and organize them. But an electronic computer can.

The marvel of the machine age, the electronic computer has been in use only since 1946. It can do simple computations—add, subtract, multiply, and divide—with lightning speed and perfect accuracy. It can multiply two 10-digit numbers in 1/1, 000 second, a problem that would take an average person five minutes to do with pencil and paper. Some computers can work 500, 000 times faster than any person can.

Once it is given a program, that is, a carefully worked-out set of instructions devised by a technician trained in computer language, a computer can gather a wide range of information for many purposes. For the scientist it can get information from outer space or from the depths of the ocean. In business and industry the computer prepares factory inventories, keeps track of sales trends and production needs, mails dividend checks, and makes out company payrolls. It can keep bank accounts up to date and make out electric bills. If you are planning a trip by plane, the computer will find out what route to take and what space is available.

Why does the author regard the electronic computer as the marvel of the machine age?

A.Because electronic computers are rare.

B.Because people know little about electronic computers.

C.Because electronic computers can do much more kinds of work that human beings can't.

D.Because electronic computers have been widely suspected.

根据下列材料,请回答下列各题 This task is the same as Task 1. The 5 questions or unfinishe
d statements are numbered 41 to 45. Between 1977 and 1981, three groups of American women, numbering 27 in all, between the age of 35 and. 65, were given month-long tests to determine how they would respond to conditions resembling those aboard the space shuttle. Though carefully selected from among many applicants, the women were volunteers and the pay was barely above the minimum wage. They were not allowed to smoke or drink alcohol during the tests, and they were expected to tolerate each others company at close quarters for the entire period. Among other things they had to stand pressure three times the force of gravity and carry out both physical and mental tasks whole exhausted from strenuous physical exercise. At the end of ten days, they had to spend a further twenty days absolutely confined to bed, during which time they suffered backaches and other discomforts, and when they were finally allowed up, the more physically active women were especially subject to pain due to a slight calcium loss. Results of the tests suggest that women will have significant advantages over man in space. They need less food and less oxygen and they stand up to radiation better. Men' s advantages in terms of strength and stamina, meanwhile, are virtually wiped out by the zero-gravity condition in space. What were those American women tested for during the whole month?

A. For the selection of the responsible persons.

B. For the condition of different group of the women.

C. To see if they were suitable for the space work.

D. To see how they would react to conditions like those aboard the space shuttle.
