听力原文: The University of California at Davis has government experiments with chemicals to get a bigger crop each year. But they haven't paid enough attention to necessary safety measures. In 1964 or 1965, an airplane was spraying chemicals over the fields. Flying low, the wheels of the plane were caught on the fence wire. The pilot got out, dusted himself off, and drank some water from a nearby pond. Then he died. The nurses and doctors got terribly sick too because of the chemicals he had on his body. A little girl was playing around a sprayer. She stuck her tongue on it and she died immediately.

These chemicals affect the farm worker through the lungs. He breathes them in. Nobody looks into the cause at all. They just was the he is sick.

Why did the plane fall to the ground?

A.It was flying low.

B.Its wheels were caught on a tree.

C.Because the chemicals caught fire easily.

Today a pilot is totally dependent on what the air traffic controller on the ground tells
him. He can't see enough to be safe. Flight watch is an instrument intended to help him.

On a screen in front of the pilot, there will be a map of the【21】around the plane. The pilot's own【22】level or height and his own plane at the center of the【23】will show up. On the map any other planes in the airspace will【24】as spots of light with "tails" showing the direction of their light. The flight watch map is【25】for the other planes are not shown at their true【26】, but at their distances away in flying time. This【27】the problem of fast planes being too far away to be seen【28】likely to make contact in seconds and【29】planes that are close enough to be seen but so slow that there's no chance of【30】for, say, ten minutes.

The pilot will be able to see on the screen whether another plane's course conflicts with【31】. The screen will show him the flight number of the other plane, so he can contact air traffic control and ask them about the other plane’s course. Then he can take【32】action if necessary. The screen will show him whether his action puts him【33】from yet another aircraft.

Technically, the【34】will be quite complex. Computers will be necessary on the ground and【35】each aircraft to enable Flight watch to collect data about the plane courses and to calculate the distances between planes. But such small computers are now quite cheap, simple and reliable.

My father taught me a lot about life, especially its hard times. I remembered one of his lessons one night when I was ready to quit a political campaign I was losing, and wrote about it in my diary.

Tired, feeling the many months of struggle, I went up to my study to make some notes. I was looking for a pencil in the back of my desk drawer, where things stored up for years, when I turned up one of father's old business cards that he was so proud of: Andrea Cuomo, Italian-American Groceries-Fine Imported Products. Then I thought about how he dealt with hard circumstances. A thousand pictures flashed through my mind, but one scene came sharply into view.

We had just moved to Holliswood, New York, from our apartment behind the store. We had our own house for the first time; it had some land around it, even trees. One, in particular, was a great green pine that must have been 40 feet tall.

Less than a week 'after we moved in, there was a terrible storm. We came home from the store that night to find the pine pulled almost totally from the ground and leaned forward, its mighty nose bent into the ground. When my brother Frankie and I saw the pine, our heart sank. But not father's.

The rain was falling. Then he announced," OK, we are going to push him up!" "What am you talking about, daddy? The roots are out of the ground !" "Shut up, we're going to push him up, he's going to grow again. "We couldn't say no to him. So we followed him into the house and we got a rope and tied the rope around the tip of the tree that lay in the round, and he stood up by the house, with me pulling on the rope and Frankie in the street in the rain, helping to push up the great green pine. In no time at all, we had it standing up straight again! Father drove a wooden pole in the ground, tied rope from the trunk to the pole, and said," Don't worry, he's going to grow again..."

I looked at the card and wanted to cry.. 1 couldn't wait to get back into the campaign.

The word "quit" (Line 2, Para. 1 ) means ______.

B.to give up

It was unfortunate that, after so trouble-free an arrival, he should stumble in the dark a
s he was rising and severely twist his ankle on a piece of rock. After the first shock the pain became bearable, and he gathered up his parachute before limping into the trees to hide it as best as he could. The hardness of the ground and the deep darkness made it almost impossible to do this efficiently. The pine needles lay several inches deep, so he simply pile them on top of the parachute, cutting the short twigs that he could feel around his legs, and spreading them on top of the needles. He had great doubts about whether it would stay buried, but there was very little else that he could do about it.

After limping for some distance in an indirect course away from his parachute he began to make his way downhill through the trees. He had to find out where he was, and then decide what to do next. But walking downhill on a rapidly swelling ankle soon proved to be almost beyond his powers. He moved more and more slowly, walking in long sideway movements across the slope, which meant taking more steps but less painful ones. By the time he cleared the trees and reached the valley, day was breaking. Mist hung in soft sheets across the fields. Small cottages and farm buildings grouped like sleeping cattle around a village church, whose pointed tower pointed high into the cold winter air to welcome the morning.

"I can't go much farther," John Harding thought. "Someone is bound to find me, but what can I do? I must get a rest before I go on. They'll look for me first up there on the mountain where the plane crashed. I bet they' re out looking for it already and they are bound to find the parachute in the end. I can' t believe they won't. So they'll know I' m not dead and must be somewhere. They'll

think I'm hiding up there in the trees and rocks so they'll look for me there. So I'll go down to the village. With luck by the evening my foot will be good enough to get me to the border."

Far above him on the mountainside he could hear the faint echo of voices, startling him after the great silence. Looking up he saw lights like little pinpoints moving across the face of the mountain in the gray light. But the road was deserted, and he struggled along, still almost invisible in the first light, easing his aching foot whenever he could, avoiding stones and rough places, and limping quietly and painfully towards the village. He reached the church at last. A great need for peace almost drew him inside, but he knew that would not do. Instead, he limped along its walls towards a very old building standing a short distance from the church doors. It seemed to have been there forever, as if it had grown out of the hill inside. It had the same air of timelessness as the church. John Harding pushed open the heavy wooden door and slipped inside.

It was really hard for John to hide the parachute because ______.

A.he had sprained his ankle

B.the parachute was very heavy

C.it was pitch-dark there and the ground was hard

D.there were less pine needles on the ground

The Deer's Death

He ran close, and again stood still, stopped by a new fear. Around him the grass was whispering and alive. He looked wildly about, then down. The ground was black with ants, great energetic ants that took no notice of him, but hurried towards the fighting shape. And as he drew in his breath and pity and terror seized him, the beast fell and the screaming stopped. Now he could hear nothing but a bird singing, and the sound of the rustling (沙沙声) whispering ants.

He peered over at the blackness that twitched with the jerking(抽搐) nerves. It grew quieter. There were small twitches from the mass that still looked vaguely like the shape of a small animal.

It came into his mind that he could shoot it and end its pain; and he raised the gun. Then he lowered it again. The deer could no longer feel; its fighting was a mechanical protest of the nerves. But it was not that which made him put down the gun. It was a swelling feeling of rage and misery and protest that expressed itself in the thought: if I had not come it would have died like this, so why should I interfere? All over the bush things like this happen; they happen all the time; this is how life goes on, by living things dying painfully. I cannot stop it. He was glad that the deer was unconscious and had gone past suffering so that he did not have to make a decision to kill it. At his feet, now, were ants tricking back with pink fragments in their mouths and there was a fresh acid smell in his nose. He sternly controlled the uselessly convulsing(痉挛的) muscles of his empty stomach, and reminded himself: the ants must eat, too.

The shape had grown small. Now it looked like nothing to be recognized. He saw the blackness thin, and bits of white showed through, shining in the sun—yes, there was the sun just up. Then the boy looked at those insects. A few were standing and gazing up at him with small glittering eyes. "Go away!" he said to the ants coldly. "I am not for you—not just yet, at any rate."

He bent over the bones and touched the sockets(孔) in the skull: that was where the eyes were, he thought suspiciously, remembering the liquid eyes of a deer.

That morning, perhaps an hour ago, this small creature had been stepping proud and free through the bush even as he himself had done. Proudly stepping the earth, it had smelt the cold morning air. Walking like kings, it had moved freely through this bush, where each blade of grass grew for it alone, and where the river ran pure sparkling water for it to drink.

And then—what had happened? Such a sure swift footed thing could surely not be trapped by a swarm of ants?

How was the deer when the boy first saw it? ______.

A.It was already dead in the bush.

B.It was still on its feet.

C.It was lying on the ground dying.

D.It was fighting the ants to a finish.

Why would anyone want to set aside a day to honor a lowly little groundhog? The answer to
that question is not certain, but a group of people get together every February 2 in Punxsutawney, Pennsylvania, to watch Punxsutawney "Pete" leave his burrow. What "Pete" does next, many believe, will indicate whether spring is just around the comer or a long way off, You see, in Pennsylvania on this date there is usually a great deal of snow on the ground, and the little animal has been hibernating during the long, cold winter. He gorged himself during the autumn months and then went into his burrow for a long sleep, his body fat helping keep him alive. But as he emerges on February 2, he looks very thin. If the sun is shining brightly and he sees his shadow, according to legend, it scares him back into his home where he will stay another six weeks. Should it be cloudy and gray, the little animal will supposedly wander While many believe in the groundhog's predictions, it is unwise to accept them as factual.

According to this reading, why do people gather every year to observe the groundhog?

A.He's cute and playful, and children love to watch him.

B.He's looking for food and the people want to help him find it in the snow.

C.Many people believe him to be a harbinger of spring.

D.The people want to be sure he is alive after such a long winter.

Around you is a strange and wonderful world that you cannot see. Billions and billions of
things live in this unseen world; many, many more things live in the world you can see. These tiny living things are in the water you drink and in the food you eat. They are in the air you breathe and in the ground under your feet. Microbes are almost everywhere in great numbers. The word "microbe" means "small life". And the world of microbes is so small that it cannot be seen by human eyes alone. A million microbes might rest on the tip of your pencil and you wouldnt know they were there. How then can you know that there really is a crowded microbe world? How can you know there are microbes at all? You can know there are microbes because you can see them with the help of a microscope. The word " microscope" means " watcher of the small". The microscope is truly a watcher of the small. It makes invisible things appear large enough for you to see them. Without the microscope and the work of one important man, the world of microbes might still not be known. This man wondered about many things and set out to learn more about them. He was not a true scientist. He had not been trained in school to be a scientist. Still, he worked as a scientist in his free time. He observed many things carefully, did experiments, and kept good records. His name was Anton Van Leeuwenhoek. Mr. Van Leeuwenhoek must have said to himself, "How can I see these small things better so that I can examine them more carefully?" In his day, there were some simple, roughly made microscopes. But Mr. Van Leeuwenhoek didnt think they were good enough. So he set out to make a microscope of his own. He experimented until he could build a microscope that made things appear about three hundred times larger than they really were. Anton Van Leeuwenhoek had made the best microscope yet!

The main idea of the first paragraph is that______.

A.microbes exist in the unseen world

B.besides the world we live in there is another world

C.the number of microbes amounts to many billions

D.the water, the food, the air and the ground under our feet make up the unseen world

Jeremy Fox, a retired businessman in a small city in England, recently bought an old farmh
ouse with a yard and a small field, some five miles out of the town. There he planned to lead a simple life with his wife, Amelia.

It was while clearing out the old ham on the far side of the yard that he made an interesting discovery. In a corner, under some old sacks, he found some large fragments (碎片) of an antique bowl. Out of curiosity, he took them into the kitchen and, much to the anger of his wife, washed the mud off them. That evening he spread newspapers over the kitchen table and carefully stuck the fragments together. However, two pieces were found missing.

Two days later, having pulled down the ham, Mr. Fox was digging over the ground in preparation for the installation of a greenhouse, when he discovered the two missing pieces. When he had stuck them in position, the bowl looked so fine that Amelia agreed to its being placed on a table in the living room, in front of the window.

"We might have something a bit special here," he said to his wife. A few days later, Jeremy took several photographs of the bowl, which he sent off to Sotheby's in London.

Unexpectedly, Sotheby's was extremely interested in the bowl and sent an expert to inspect it. It. turned out that it was a Chinese Ming fish bowl, dating back to around 1590, and might be expected to get a five-figure sum at an auction (拍卖).

A week later, still more unexpectedly, two police officers called and told the Foxes the bowl was stolen property.

So the bowl never reached the auction room, and Mr. Fox never received the five figure sum that had been mentioned. However, he framed one of the photographs he had taken and hung it on the wall.

At first Mrs. Fox seemed to be______.

A.greatly annoyed at MT. Fox's enthusiasm

B.very much interested in the discovery

C.uncertain of Mr. Fox' s enthusiasm

D.curious about Mr. Fox's findings

earthquake ended?

W: Oh, it was terrible. I'll never forget it. Well, Jack and I always get up at about a quarter to five. He has to work early. You see, while I was in the kitchen preparing breakfast, the quake came. There was this horrible sound and the floor was just bouncing and rolling like wave, all at the same time.

M: Then what did you do?

W: Well, we figure out it was an earthquake. Then I crawled under the table, and I shouted at Jack to come. But he just stood there.

M: Whoa!

W: It lasted 24 seconds, and then it stopped. And Jack and I could hear people talking outside, so we tried to go out to the front door, but it was jammed shut. And then the first aftershock hit.

M: That's incredible. Then what did you guys do?

W: Well, I remember that someone shouted, "Get out of there, quickly!" Jack said: "Well, go out of the window." But I called out: "It's too high up," because we were living on the second floor. "Not any more," Jack shouted back. So, we looked out of the window and, sure enough, we were down on the ground!

M: Your second floor apartment was on the ground?

W: We couldn't believe it. We opened the window and crawled out. Once we were down safely, we turned around and looked back at our apartment building. The whole first was gone -- it was just totally flattened.

M: Mrs. Smith. Do you mean that the whole first floor was gone?

W: Yes, the first floor was gone.

M: And what about your apartment?

W: The apartment -- can you believe it? Had moved and stood there.

M: Incredible, Mrs. Smith, absolutely incredible.
