SECTION A CONVERSATIONS

Directions: In this section you will hear several conversations. Listen to the conversations carefully and then answer the questions that follow.

听力原文:Kristine: Did you speak anything when you were born?

Timothy: No. I babbled.

Kristine: You babbled, and not too well at that perhaps. But you learned English. Now, are you less capable of learning than when you were two years old?

Timothy: I suspect I am, yes. Languages have been hard for me, so maybe it’s a good example to talk about.

Kristine: Right. So when you were two years old, you were able to learn a language.

Timothy: I was able to learn English very nicely.

Kristine: Now of course you were taught in a much more healthy environment than you were in school, because you had people who loved you, and you had lots of practice, and they didn’t push you beyond whatever you could do in a given day. and you had lots of rewards.

Timothy: That’s tree.

Kristine: Well. It turns out that if you try teaching a language that way to adults, people learn a language in one-fifth, one-sixth, one-eighth the time that our conventional educational system says it takes.

Timothy: You know, now that you mention it, it’s tree, It’s called accelerated learning. In fact I even did attend a seminar, and learned how to speak quite a bit of Spanish in a few hours that way. But I forgot.

Kristine: Because you had a belief system that says, "Since I' m not good at languages, even though I learned Spanish, a lot of it, in a few hours, that didn’t count."

Timothy: Yes, right.

Why did the man learn to speak very easily?

A.Because he learned English after he was born.

B.Because he started to learn English when he was two years old.

C.Because he learned English in school.

D.Because he was lucky to learn English in a congenial atmosphere.

As protector of her family’s health, the poineer woman confronted situations she never ima
gined before crossing the Mississippi. Few women came West prepared to deal with desert sunburn, rattlesnake bites, or arrow wounds. Even when doctors were available, they were often no more knowledgeable than their patients. And most patent (专利) medicines were no more reliable than the itinerant (巡游) merchants who sold them.

In certain cases, a woman could draw upon the folk wisdom and remedies she had learned back home; Western mosquitoes, for example, proved to be as repelled by a paste of vinegar and salt as were their Eastern cousins. More often, however, a woman was guided only by her own ingenuity in concocting (调制的) tonics (补药), powders, poisons, and polishes from whatever she had at land: salt made a passable toothpaste, gunpowder was applied to wants, and turpentine to open cuts, goose grease, skunk oil, and the ever present lard were basic liniments; medicinal teas and tonics were brewed from sunflower seeds and roots.

Which of the following statements best expresses the main idea of the passage? ()

A.Many people who went West were doctors.

B.Medicine and the people who sold it were not reliable.

C.Many pioneer women died from bites inflicted by snakes and mosquitoes.

D.Pioneer women had to invent their own remedies when they moved West.

听力原文: When I arrived in America three years ago, I was surprised by the tremendous amount of advertising. But now I've come to realize that it is a creative and necessary part of an industrial society. I, too, want to improve my life style. and to buy better products. I look to advertising to show me how to do it. Deciding what to believe in an advertising, however, isn't easy. It seems to me that a person must purchase things with a lot of care. As a consumer, I want to get the best for my money. So I really have to understand the techniques of advertising. Otherwise, manufacturers would be able to sell me anything, whatever its quality may be. The creative aspects of advertisement, for instance, often cover up the defects or problems in products. I have learned this well, since I have made purchases and lost money because the items were of poor quality. The future advertising most likely will involve more public participation. In the future, if consumers really care about the quality of something as well as the quantity, maybe advertisers will begin to care more about what they are trying to sell.

Which of the following statements is TRUE about the speaker?

A.He has always lived in America.

B.He has been in America for three years.

C.He visited America three years ago.

D.He has come to America to do research on advertising.

Geologists have been studying volcanoes for a long time. Though they have learned a great
deal, they still have not discovered the causes of volcanic action. They know that the inside of the earth is very hot, but they are not sure exactly what causes the great heat. Some geologists have thought that the heat is caused by the great pressure of the earth’s outer layers. Or the heat may be left from the time when the earth was formed. During the last sixty years scientists have learned about radium, uranium, thorium and other radioactive elements. These give ont heat all the time as they change into other elements. Many scientists now believe that much of the heat inside the earth is produced by radioactive element.

Whatever the cause of the heat may be, we do know that the earth get hotter the farther down we dig. In deep mines and oil wells the temperature rises about 1 for each 50 feet. At this rate the temperature 40 miles below the earth’s surface would be over 4,0007 This is much hotter than necessary to melt rock. However, the pressure of the reek above keeps most materials from melting at their usual melting points. Geologists believe that the rock deep in the earth may be plastic, or putty-like. In other words, the rock yields slowly to pressure but is not liquid. But if some change in the earth's crust re leases the pressure, the rock melts. Then the hot, liquid rock can move up toward the surface.

When the melted rock works its way close to the earth crust, a volcano may be formed. The melted rock often contains steam and other gases under great pressure. If the rock above often gives way, the pressure is released. Then the sudden expansion of the gases causes explosions. These blow the melted rock into pieces of different sizes and shoot them high in the air. Here they cool and harden into volcanic ash and cinders. Some of this material falls around the hole made in the earth's surface. The melted rock may keep on rising and pour out as lava. In this way, volcanic ash, cinders and lava build up the cone-shaped mountains that we call volcanoes.

The subject of this passage is the ______.

A.formulation of volcanoes

B.results of volcanic actions

C.work of geologists

D.interior of the earth

y're wondering where this is going to go.

M: I often think about it, too. How will it develop? How will it affect different areas? Is this change going to be beneficial for me personally?

W: I have a friend who is a businessman and is very non-technical. Last year, when he found out he could play cards with friends all over the country on a computer, ho bought a portable computer. At first he used it mostly to play cards wherever he went, but now he's learned how to do other things on the Internet and he's fascinated by how the world changes and what that means from a business point of view.

M: There's no doubt the Internet will be a powerful commercial medium. It'll connect hundreds of millions of customers and open up huge markets for all kinds of products and services.

W: That's true. I can imagine companies sending advertisements directly to customers over the net. Customers, in turn, can examine and compare whatever goods they want to buy and tell their computers to find them at the best price offered.

M: Yeah. Your computer will be your representative and will spare no efforts in bargaining with the computers of various sellers. It'll be a shopper's heaven.

A.He played cards with people all over the world.

B.He played cards on the internet at first and later did other things with computer.

C.He was fascinated by how the world changes.

D.He understood the computer affected different areas.

根据下列短文,回答下列各题。 The unique human habit of taking in and employing animals--ev
en competitors like wolves--spurred on human tool-making and language, which have both driven humanitys success, Pat Shipman says, paleoanthropologist of Penn State University. "Wherever you go in the world, whatever ecosystem (生态系统), whatever culture, people live with animals," Shipman said. For early humans, taking in and caring for animals would seem like a poor strategy for survival. "On the face of it, you are wasting your resources. So this is a very weird behavior," Shipman said. But its not so weird in the context something else humans were doing about 2.6 million years ago: switching from a mostly vegetarian diet to one rich in meat. This happened because humans invented stone hunting tools that enabled them to compete with other top predators. Quite a rapid and bizarre switch for any animal. So we invented the equipment, learned how to track and kill, and eventually took in animals who also knew how to hunt--like wolves and other canines. Others, like goats, cows and horses, provided milk, hair and, finally, hides and meat. Managing all of these animals--or just tracking them--requires technology, knowledge and ways to preserve and convey information. So languages had to develop and evolve to meet the challenges. Tracking game has even been argued to be the origin of scientific inquiry, said Peter Richerson, professor emeritus (名誉退休的) in the Department of Environmental Science and Policy at the University of California, Davis. One of the signs that this happened is in petroglyphs (史前岩画) and other rock art left by ancient peoples. At first they were abstract, geometric patterns that are impossible to decipher (破译). Then they converge on one subject: animals. There have also been genetic changes in both humans and our animals. For the animals those changes developed because human bred them for specific traits, like a cow that gives more mill or a hen that lays more eggs. But this evolutionary influence works both ways. Dogs, for instance, might have been selectively taken in by humans who shared genes for more compassion, Those humans then prospered with the dogs help in hunting and securing their homes. What do we learn from the first paragraph about animals?

A.Animals have driven humanitys success.

B.Tool-making and language are uniquely human habits.

C.Employing wolves is uniquely human habit.

D.People live with animals everywhere.

How to Interview People

Interviewing (采访) is one of those skills that you can only get better at. You will never again feel so iii at ease as when you try. it for the first time, and probably you&39;ll never feel entirely comfortable trying to get from another person answers that he or she may be too shy to reveal.(46)The rest is instinct, which can all be learned with experience.

The basic tools for an interview are paper and two or three well-sharpened pencils. But keep your notebook or paper out of sight until you need it. There&39;s nothing less likely to relax a person than the arrival of someone with a note-taking pad.(47)Take a while just to chat, judging what sort of person you&39;re dealing with, getting him or her to trust you.

Never go into an interview without doing whatever homework you can. If you are interviewing a town official, know his voting record. If it&39;s an actor, know what plays he has been in.(48)

Many beginning interviewers are afraid that they are forcing the other person to answer questions and have no right to inquire about his personal secrets.(49)Unless the person really hates being interviewed, he is delighted that somebody wants to interview him. Most men and women lead lives that are uninteresting, and they grasp any chance to talk to an outsider who seems eager to listen.

This doesn&39;t necessarily mean that it will go well. In general you will be talking to people who have never been interviewed before, and they will get used to the process awkwardly, perhaps not giving you anything that you can use.(50)You will both even begin to enjoy it-proof that you aren&39;t forcing your victim to do something he doesn&39;t really want to.

(46)

A. Come back another day; it will go better.

B. But at least half of the skill is mechanical.

C. As one philosopher interviewed in the film notes, they lack irony.

D. You will not be liked if you inquire about facts that you could have learned in advance.

E. This fear is almost 100 percent unnecessary.

F. Both of you need time to get to know each other.
