听力原文: A steadily expanding appetite for coal, fuelled by China' s rapid industrial growth, has led to a dramatic rise in environmental damage from acid rain, the China Daily, an official Chinese newspaper, reported on December 7,1999. The newspaper summarised the findings of a recent study conducted by the Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS) and the Chinese Academy of Forestry(CAF).

The study' s authors said that after Europe and North America, China is the world' s third largest region to be affected by acid rain, a type of air pollution formed when oxides of sulfur and nitrogen combine with atmospheric moisture. Nearly 50 percent of China' s land area is now affected, a figure the researchers expect will rise.

I had to go to Washington last week for a conference. I arrived at the airport in plenty of time and checked in, but I only had one small case so I decided to take it on the plane as hand luggage. As the flight was not due to board for 45 minutes, I went to a cafe, sat down, and ordered a cup of coffee.

While I was sitting there drinking my coffee and reading my paper, I was vaguely aware of a woman and her child coming to sit at the next table. I did not pay much attention to them, though, and when my flight was called I reached for my case and left. An hour later, the plane was in the air and I decided to look at the conference programme to see what I wanted to attend. Imagine my horror when I opened the case and found that it was full of picture books and children' s toys—and imagine what-the woman must have thought about a case full of men' s clothes and scientific papers!

听材料,回答下列各题: It is commonly thought that age brings wisdom. And this is largely
true, it seems--unless you are Japanese. In which case, by the time you are 25, you 26 be just as wise as your elders, an 27 new study reveals. Americans, however, are more 28 and develop deep understanding over time, 29 a research by the University of Waterloo in Ontario, Canada. In one of the tests, designed to measure five 30 aspects of reasoning, U.S. citizens scores improved by 22 percent over 50 years. But, in the 31 scored out of 100, both 25-year-old and 75-year-old Japanese participants had an average quotient of 51 for intergroup wisdom-the idea of understanding society. With Americans, on the other hand, results from the same tests 32 between averages of 45 and 55 between the two age groups. Also, 33 wisdom--the understanding of relationships between individuals--the scores of the 225 U.S. participants climbed from 46 to 50. However, 34 the 186 Japanese people, their scores actually dropped slightly from 53 to 52. The tests also recorded other unexpected results. Given the U.S. reputation of an individualistic society, you might expect its participants interpersonal wisdom to be higher than their supposedly more collective Japanese 35 . Yet the study showed that by 75, the Japanese scored higher in the interpersonal wisdom and Americans, in fact, achieved higher results in the intergroup variety. Dr Grossman suggested that perhaps, then, you need individual skills when society is collective, and social ones when it is individualistic. 第26空答案为()。

The word science is heard so often in modern times that almost everybody has some notion o
f its meaning. The meaning of the term is confusing, but everyone should understand its meaning and objectives. Just to make the explanation as simple as possible, suppose science is defined as classified knowledge.

Even in true sciences, distinguishing tact from fiction is not always easy. For this reason great care should be taken to distinguish between beliefs and truths. For example, hypotheses and theories are attempts to explain natural phenomena. From these positions scientists continue to experiment and observe until they are proved. The exact status of any explanation should be clearly labeled to avoid confusion.

The objectives of science are primarily the discovery and the subsequent understanding of the unknown. Man cannot be satisfied with recognizing that secrets exist in nature or that questions are unanswerable; he must solve them. Toward that end specialists in the field of biology and related fields of interest are directing much of their time and energy.

Actually, two basic approaches lead to the discovery of new information. One, aimed at satisfying curiosity, is referred to as pure science. The other is aimed at using knowledge for specific purposes such as improving health, or creating new consumer products. In this case knowledge is put to economic use. Such an approach is referred to as applied science.

Sometimes practical-minded people miss the point of pure science in thinking only of its immediate application for economic reward. Chemists responsible for discoveries could hardly anticipated that their findings would one day result in applications of such a practical nature as those directly related to life and death. The discovery of one bit of information opens the door to the discovery of another. However, one should remember that the construction of the microscope had to precede the discovery of the cell. Many scientists dedicating their lives to pure science are not apologetic about ignoring the practical side of their discoveries; they know from experience that most knowledge is eventually applied.

To define science, we can simply name it as ______.

A.the study of nature and mankind

B.an attempt to pose and prove hypotheses and theories

C.categorized knowledge

D.the study of unrelated natural phenomena

Leisure sickness is one of those modem conditions. How do you know if you have been struck
down with leisure sickness? Were you struck down by some mystery illness just before setting off on a two-week holiday? If it is really the case, chances are you have leisure sickness. A Dutch psychologist(荷兰心理学家) identified the condition. He started researching the subject after he became curious about his own pattern of illness. "If I am ill, then it's at the weekend or at Christmas. Then I heard stories from friends who all said the same thing." He surveyed around 2 000 men and women and estimated that about 3% of the population may suffer from weekend or vacation sickness.

In a further in-depth study of 114 Dutch sufferers, he found that the most frequently reported symptoms included headaches, fatigue, muscular(肌肉) pain and, particularly in relation to vacation. Most of them had been suffering from leisure sickness for over 10 years and associated the beginning of the illness with a major life event, such as marriage, birth of a first child or a change of job. Many shared certain characteristics—a high workload, perfectionism(追求完美), eagerness to achieve and an over-developed sense of responsibility, making it difficult for them to switch off outside of work. According to him, there are a number of possible explanations for the condition. "One possibility is a kind of competition between information from the outside world—external information—and information from the body-internal information."

Leisure sickness is regarded as one of those ______.

A.modem diseases

B.poor environment

C.state of existence

D.state of general health

“There is one and only one social responsibility o...

“There is one and only one social responsibility of businesses,” wrote Milton Friedman, a Nobel prize-winning economist, “That is, to use its resources and engage in activities designed to increase its profits.” But even if you accept Firedman’s premise and regard corporate social responsibility (CSR) policies as a waste of shareholders’ money, things may not be absolutely clear-cut. New research suggests that CSR may create monetary value for companies-at least when they are prosecuted for corruption.

The largest firms in America and Britain together spend more than $ 15 billion a year on CSR, according to an estimate by EPG, a consulting firm. This could add value to their businesses in three ways. First, consumers may take CSR spending as a “signal” that a company’s products are of high quality. Second, customers may be willing to buy a company’s products as an indirect way to donate to the good causes it helps. And third, through a more diffuse “halo effect,” whereby its good deeds earn it greater consideration from consumers and others.

Previous studies on CSR have had trouble differentiating these effects because consumers can be affected by all three. A recent study attempts to separate them by looking at bribery prosecutions under America’s Foreign Corrupt Practices Act (FCPA). It argues that since prosecutors do not consume a company’s products as part of their investigations, they could be influenced only by the halo effect. The study found that, among prosecuted firms, those with the most comprehensive CSR programmes tended to get more lenient penalties. Their analysis ruled out the possibility that it was firms’ political influence, rather than their CSR stand, that accounted for the leniency: Companies that contributed more to political campaigns did not receive lower fines.

In all, the study concludes that whereas prosecutors should only evaluate a case based on its merits, they do seem to be influenced by a company’s record in CSR. “We estimate that either eliminating a substantial labour-rights concern, such as child labour or increasing corpora giving by about 20% results in fines that generally are 40% lower than the typical punishment for briding foreign officials,” says one researcher.

Researchers admit that their study does not answer the question of how much businesses ought to spend on CSR. Nor does it reveal how much companies are banking on the halo effect rather than the other possible benefits, when they decide their do-gooding policies. But at least they have demonstrated that when companies get into trouble with the law, evidence of good character can win them a less costly punishment.

Sleep

We all know that the normal human daily cycle of activity is of some 7 - 8 hours' sleep alternating with some 16 - 17 hours' wakefulness and that, broadly speaking, the sleep normally coincides with the hours of darkness. Our present concern is with how easily and to what extent this cycle can be modified.

The question is no mere academic one. The case, for example, with which people can change from working in the day to working at night is a question of growing importance in industry where automation calls insistently for round-the-clock working of machines. It normally takes from five days to one week for a person to adapt to a reversed routine of sleep and wakefulness, sleeping during the day and working at night. Unfortunately, it is often the case in industry that shifts are changed every week; a person may work from 12 midnight to 8 a.m. one week, 8 am to 4 pm the next, and 4 pm to 12 midnight the third and so on. This means that no sooner has he got used to one routine than he has to change to another, so that much of his time is spent neither working nor sleeping very efficiently.

One answer would seem to be longer periods on each shift, a month, or even three months. Recent research by Bonjer of the Netherlands, however, has shown that people on such systems will revert to their normal habits of sleep and wakefulness during the weekend and that this is quite enough to destroy any adaptation to night work built up during the week.

The only real solution appears to be to hand over the night shift to a corps of permanent night workers whose nocturnal wakefulness may persist through all weekends and holidays. An interesting study of the domestic life and health of night-shift workers was carried out by Brown. She found a high incidence of disturbed sleep, digestive disorder and domestic disruption among those on alternating day and night shifts, but no abnormal occurrence of these symptoms among those on permanent night work.

The question raised in Paragraph 1 is "no mere academic one"

A.because Bonjer's findings are different from Brown's.

B.because sleep normally coincides with the hours of darkness.

C.because some people can change their sleeping habits easily.

D.because shift work in industry requires people to change their sleeping habits.
