Part A

Directions: Read the following four texts. Answer the questions below each text by choosing A, B, C or D. (40 points)

Advertising sells its products by offering seductive promises of youth, beauty, health, money, ease, romance, better lifestyle, even time. There's no logical connection between a car and a cougar, but the image is powerful and presented with sophistication. We buy it and we may well buy the product.

When it comes to advertising, let the buyer beware. There are several less-than-candid techniques which advertisers use to get our attention. A product may be filmed or photographed in such a way to make it appear bigger, better, or more luscious. A product may be presented as being "unique", "one-of-a-kind", or "supreme", when in fact it's identical to other products on the market. A product may claim to be "new" or "improved" when only an insignificant change has been made.

Finally, an advertiser may offer distorted truths or even tell outright lies. It takes a while for the government or the competition to catch up with false claims in advertising. Meanwhile, the public has been led to believe that a mouth wash can cure the common cold, or that bee pollen retards aging in human skin.

The consumer's best defense is awareness. He can listen to, but not learn, the emotional message broadcast by the ad. He can distinguish between what the ad pretends to offer and what it is really selling. A face cream, for example, can only do so much. It can reduce dryness and provide temporary smoothness and moisture to the skin. But it is made in a factory, not in a magician's study. It cannot turn back the clock.

According to the author, many of the promises made by the advertiser are ______.

A.true

B.reliable

C.not true

D.emotive

Most consumers are familiar with bar codes. Those black-and-white stripes appear on almost
every product purchased. Often the codes are scanned at the checkout counter, causing the item name and its price to appear on (141) the cash register screen and the receipt. This gives a record to the consumer and helps store management monitor inventory.

Many delivery services use bar codes to track the progress of each envelope, package, or crate in transit. Every item (142) a bar code, which is read at a number of points from the moment it leaves the sender's hands to the moment the recipient accepts the delivery.

An interesting use for the bar code has been developed by a scientist who works with bees. The scientist attached bar codes to the backs of individual bees in order to (143) them and to follow their movements. Laser scanners at the entrance of the hive read the bar codes to monitor how long each bee had been gone from the hive. By keeping (144) of individual bees, scientists hope to learn more about honey production. Knowing how far bees travel to gather pollen and how many trips they make back to the hive could eventually help beekeepers predict honey yields.

听力原文: Bees are very small animals which fly through the air to look for flowers for food. When a bee has found some food, it returns to their home called a hive and dances. The dance is the way the bee communicates to other bees the fact that it has found food.

Bees do two kinds of dances to tell other bees of their discovery of food. First, there is a round dance. The bee moves in a circle inside the hive. The round dance is used when food is close by, not more than ten meters away. The other bees also smell the bee that has found the food. The smell tells them what kind of flower to look for. After watching the round dance and smelling the bee that has found the food, the other bees can find the food source.

A second kind of dance done by the bees is a tail-wagging dance. The tail-wagging dance is used when the food is more than ten meters away. The bees know from the speed of the tail-wagging dance just how far away the food source is. The line the bee dances on shows the direction that the bees must fly in to find the food. The bees also smell the bee that has found the food to know what kind of flower to look for.

What do the bee's round dance and tail-wagging dance indicate?

A.The smell of the food.

B.The quality of the food.

C.The distance of the food.
