听力原文: In the local newspaper of my community recently there was a story about a man named Mike Smith. He lived in a small town about 40 miles from my home. He had served 5 years in a New York prison for robbing a restaurant. When he returned to his family, Mr. Smith couldn't find a job. Everyone knew he had been in prison and no one trusted him. Finally in desperation, he calmly walked in- to a local barber shop where he was well-known, pulled out a gun and took all the money the barber had. Up to this point it had been a fairly routine crime. But then something unusual happened. Mr. Smith didn't try to get away. He got into his car, drove slowly out of his town and waited for the police. When they called him, he made only one request. He turned to arresting policemen and said, "Would you please ask the court to put my family on welfare as soon as possible?"

Mr. Dodds works in a bank, and lives by himself. The only family he has is in the next town: his sister lives there with her husband, and her son, Mark. Mr. Dodds does not see his sister, or her family, from one year to the next, but he sends them Christmas cards, and he has not forgotten one of Mark's seventeen birthdays.
Last week Mr. Dodds had quite a surprise. He drove home from his office at the usual time, driving neither too slow nor too fast; he parked his car where he always perked it, out of the way of other cars, and he went inside to make his evening meal. Straight away, there was a knock at the door. Mr. Dodds opened the door, to find a policeman standing on the door step.
"What have I done wrong?" Mr. Dodds asked himself. "Have I driven on the wrong side of the road? Has there been some trouble at the office? Have I forgotten to pay an important bill?"
"Hello, Uncle." said the policeman. "My name's Mark."

听力原文: Henry Smith taught science at the City School. Once he went to a bookstore and bought some books, most of which were expensive ones. He left them in his car in a quiet street. Then he went and bought some other things at other shops. At 6 o' clock he came back to the car. One window was open - and the books were gone! Henry drove back to his home on Lake Street. That night he wrote a letter to a newspaper. The next day he went to the police. On Friday people read an advertisement in the newspaper:
BOOK WANTED
Have you any books that you no longer want? I buy old and modem books. Open all day on Saturdays. Henry Smith, 18 Lake Street.
Henry stayed at home on Saturday. His first visitor came at 8 o' clock. Henry took him to the kitchen. At half past nine, another man arrived. He had a bag under his arm.
"Mr. Smith?" the man asked.
"That's right," Henry said. "Can I help you?"
"I have some good books. You buy books, don' t you ?"
"Yes, bring them in. I' Il have a look at them."
Soon the books were on the dining - table. "Come in now," Henry called out," and bring the list."
A policeman came into the dining -room. He read the rifles on the books and then those on the list in his hand. They were the same.
"Come with me, sir," the policeman said to the man.
