根据材料请回答 46~50 题

Exchange a glance with someone, and then look away. 46 Hold the glance for a sec-ond longer, and you have made a different statement.Hold for 3 seconds, and the mean-ing has changed again. For every social situation, there is a permissible time that you can hold a person's gaze without being intimate, rude, or aggressive. If you are on an eleva-tor, what gaze-time are you permitted? 47 You very likely give other passengers a quick glance to size them up and to assure them that you mean no threat.Since being close to an-other person signals the possibility of interaction, you need to emit a signal telling others you want to be left alone. So you cut off eye contact, what sociologist Erving Goffman(1963) calls "a dimming of the lights". 48 Should you break the rule against staring at a stranger on an elevator, you will make the other person exceedingly uncomfortable, and you are likely to feel a bit strange yourself.

If you hold eye contact for more than 3 seconds, what are you telling another person? 49 For instance, a man and a woman communicate interest in this manner. They typical-ly gaze at each other for about 3 seconds at a time, then drop their eyes down for 3 sec-onds, before letting their eyes meet again. But if one man gives another man a 3-second-plus stare, he signals "I know you." "I am interested in you." Or " 50 " This type of stare often produces hostile feelings.

A.To answer this question, consider what you typically do.

B.If one is looked at by a stranger for too long, he tends to feel curious.

C. You look down at the floor, at the indicator lights, anywhere but into another pas-senger's eyes.

D.Do you realize that you have made a statement?

E.Much depends on the person and the situation.

F.You look peculiar and I am curious about you.

Nonverbal (非语言的) communication has to do with gestures, movements and close-ness of two people when they are talking. The scientists say that those gestures, movements and so on have meaning which words do not carry.

For example, the body distance between two speakers can be important. North Ameri-cans often complain that South Americans are unfriendly because they tend to stand close to the North American when speaking, while the South American often consider the North American to be "cold" or "distant" because he keeps a greater distance between himself and the person he is speaking to. The "eye contact" provides another example of what we are calling nonverbal communication. Scientists have observed that there is more eye contact between people who like each other than there is between people who don't like each other.

The length of time that the person whom you are speaking to looks at your eyes indi-cates the amount of interest he has in the things you are talking about.

On the other hand, too long a gaze can make people uncomfortable. The eyes apparent-ly play a great part in nonverbal communication. Genuine warmth or interest, shyness or confidence can often be seen in the eyes. We do not always consider a smile to bea sign of friendliness. Someone, who is always smiling, and with little apparent reasons, often makes us uneasy.

According to the passage, nonverbal communication______.

A.is a method often used by people who cannot speak

B.can tell something that words cannot

C.can be used to talk with people who cannot bear

D.is less used than words

Section B

Directions: There are 2 passages in this section. Each passage is followed by some questions or unfinished statements. For each of them there are four choices marked A, B, C and D. You should decide on the best choice.

Eye contact is a nonverbal technique that helps the speaker "sell" his or her ideas to an audience. Besides its persuasive powers, eye contact helps hold listener interest. A successful speaker must maintain direct contact with an audience. To have good rapport (关系) with listeners, a speaker should maintain direct eye contact for at least 75 percent of the time. Some speakers focus exclusively on their notes. Others gaze over the heads of their listeners. Both are losing audience interest and esteem. People who maintain eye contact while speaking, from a podium (演讲台) or from across the table, are "regarded not only as exceptionally well-disposed by their target but also as more believable and earnest."

To show the potency of eye contact in daily life, we have only to consider how passers-by behave when their glances happen to meet on the street. At one extreme are those people who feel obliged to smile when they make eye contact. At the other extreme are those who feel awkward and immediately look away. To make eye contact, it seems, is to make a certain link with someone.

Eye contact with an audience also helps a speaker know and monitor the listeners. It is, in fact, essential for analyzing an audience during a speech. Visual cues from audience members can indicate that a speech is dragging, that the speaking is dwelling on a particular point too long, or that a particular point requires further explanation. As we have pointed out, visual feedback from learners should play an important role in shaping a speech as it is delivered.

The passage is mainly concerned with ______.

A.the importance of eye contact

B.the potency of non-verbal techniques

C.successful speech delivery

D.an effective way to gain visual feedback
