听力原文: During the early American colonial years, corn was more plentiful than wheat, so corn bread was more common than wheat bread. Friendly Indians showed colonists how to grow corn and how to prepare it for food and pioneer women then improved the Indian cooking techniques. When people traveled, they went on foot or horseback, sleeping and eating in the forests. They carried corn bread for sustenance. The corn bread came to be called journeyeake. Later when roads and taverns were built and stagecoaches carried passengers, journeycake became johnnycake, a name many easterners still use for corn bread. The kinds of bread made with cornmeal were and still are almost without limit. Every region has its specialties.

From the start, southerners showed a preference for white eorm:neal, northerners for yellow. And pioneers on the frontier, when they ran out of yeast, made salt-rising bread. They stirred together water, a little water ground cornmeal, potatoes, and salt. They set the mixture, uncovered, in a warm place until it absorbed bacteria from the air and began to ferment. Then they removed the potatoes and used the liquid as leavening for their bread, made with white flour.

听力原文: In 1946 there was a program in the Rio Grande valley to substitute the hybrid com, which is produced by mixing several types of corn, for the native corn. The native corn was of poor nutritional quality and gave a poor quantity of grain, while the hybrid corn was of excellent quality and gave about three times as large a crop as the native variety. In the first year, half of the 84 farmers in the village planted the hybrid corn and doubled the corn production. Three years later, however, only three farmers planted the hybrid corn. The others were planting the traditional variety. At the beginning of the project, the program leader studied the pattern of the natural relations of plants, animals, and people to each other and to their surroundings of the area and showed films demonstrating the superiority of the new corn. The farmers agreed that the hybrid com had great advantages. The size of the corn confirmed these advantages. Why did they stop planting it? They complained that it wasn't good for cooking and they didn't like the flavor.

(27)

A.Replacing the native corn with the hybrid corn.

B.Replacing the hybrid corn with the native corn.

C.Replacing the new type of corn with the traditional corn.

D.Replacing the traditional corn with the native corn.

Physicists all over the world, back in 1895, were pretty much agreed that the great work o
f physics had all been done. Some of them mourned publicly that no discoveries of truly major importance were likely to be made in the future. But then they did not know that a Professor Roentgen, working alone in a modest laboratory in Germany, had begun a series of experiments with a crude induction coil, a pear-shaped bulb from which the air had been removed, and a sheet of paper painted with certain metallic salts. And professor Roentgen did not know that his work was destined to reveal a force of nature—never before suspected—that would almost overnight revolutionize medicine and technology, and become an instrument for deeper probing of the structure of matter.

For as long as humans have raised crops as a source of food and other products, insects ha
ve damaged them. Between 1870 and 1880, locusts ate millions of dollars' worth of crops in the Mississippi Valley. Today in the United States the cotton boll weevil damages about 300 million dollars' worth of crops each year. Additional millions are lost each year to the appetites of other plant-eating insects. Some of these are corn borers, gypsy moths, potato beetles, and Japanese beetles. In modern times, many powerful insecticides(杀虫剂) have been used in an attempt to destroy insects that damage crops and trees. Some kinds of insecticides, when carefully used, have worked well. Yet the same insecticides have caused some unexpected problems. In one large area, an insecticide was used against Japanese beetles, which eat almost any kind of flower or leaf. Shortly afterward, the number of corn borers almost doubled. As intended, the insecticide had killed many Japanese beetles. But it had killed many of the insect enemies of the corn borer as well. In another case, an insecticide was used in Louisiana to kill the troublesome fire ant. The insecticide did not kill many fire ants. It did kill several small animals. It also killed some insect enemies of the sugarcane borer, a much more destructive pest than the fire ants. As a result, the number of sugarcane borers increased and severely damaged the sugarcane crop. To be sure that one insect pest will not be traded for another when an insecticide is used, scientists must perform careful experiments and do wide research. The experiments and research provide knowledge of the possible hazards an insecticide may bring to plant and animal communities. Without such knowledge, we have found that nature sometimes responds to insecticides in unexpected ways. An insecticide was used in Louisiana to kill the troublesome______.

A.corn borer

B.Japanese beetle

C.gypsy moth

D.fire ant
