听力原文:Light travels at a speed that is about a million times faster than the speed of s

听力原文: Light travels at a speed that is about a million times faster than the speed of sound. In one second, light travels about 300, 000 km, but sound travels only about 334 meters. You can get some idea of this difference by watching the start of a race. If you stand some distance away from the starter, you can see smoke come from his gun before the sound reaches your ears.

This great speed of light produces some strange facts. Sunlight takes about 8 minutes to reach us. If you look at the light of the moon tonight, remember that the light rays left the moon 1.3 seconds before they reached you. The nearest star is so far away that the light that you can see from it tonight started to travel towards you about four years ago at a speed of nearly 20 million km per minute. In some cases, the light from one of tonight's stars started on its journey to you before you were born. Thus, if we want to be honest, we cannot say, "the stars are shining tonight.” We have to say, "the tars look pretty. They were shining four years ago, but their light has only just reached the earth."

听力原文: Sight is not something that reaches out from our eyes. Instead it is the light t
hat travels to our eyes. You see this page, for example, because light, reflecting from the sun or an electric light, travels from the paper to your eyes. Sometimes we see light as it comes from a direct source, such as the sun, fire, lighting, or a light bulb. The rest of the time we see light as it is reflected off objects. It must have been a great leap in the intuition of scientists to realize that light actually travels. It isn’t just there! In the air light travels at a speed of 186,000 miles per second. It travels slightly faster in a vacuum and slower in other trans- parent materials such as water or diamonds. It takes light less than one minute to travel from the earth to the moon and about 15 minutes to go from the earth to the sun.

听力原文:A heater is using convection when it warms the air in a room. And the air in turn
warms the people and objects in the room. A hot water radiator, a stove and forced air furnace are all convection heaters. A quartz heater, on the other hand, heats the objects and people in a room without heating the air. It does this by producing radiation heat that travels like light waves. The radiation is then directed at objects by means of a reflector.

How is the quartz heater different from other types of heaters?

A.It heats only the objects in a room.

B.It is lighter in weight.

C.It heats the room quicker.

D.It is more common.

听力原文:M: Think about it, Mary. Through telecommunication information travels almost at
the speed of light.

W: That is 1,860,000 miles per second, isn't it?

M: Yeh. Or 300,000 km per second. Of course only light can travel that fast.

W: Yeh. I know, Bob. But it is still incredible. When an astronaut lands on the moon within seconds we on earth can see it happen. People here in Australia see it at the same moment they see it in US. It is wonderful.

M: Maybe it's wonderful. I know very well it is a fact. All over the planet we can see the same thing at the same time. So moving on the moon or playing a soccer game or if we like we can watch the same war.

W: That's awful !

M: What? Soccer?

W: You know very well that I mean war. It's awful to have a war and it's awful to watch a war on television. It's not right to sit in your house to watch people kill each other.

M: Right or wrong, awful or not, it is a fact. Wars are on the television all the time, and people all over the world watch it. Sometimes they eat dinner while they watch.

W: I don't believe that.

M: The trouble with you is that you have many opinions about things but you don't look at facts. You don't see what you don't want to see.

(23)

A.The speed of light.

B.The speed of telecommunications.

C.Astronauts landing on the moon.
