听力原文: It was 1951, during my first week at North Carolina College, a black school. The English chairman's wife, who was as light as a white woman, stopped me one day in the hall.

When I went to her office, she said, "You had the highest grade on the examination." She was talking about the exam that the entire freshman class took. In spite of her smile, her eyes and tone of voice said, "How could this black-skinned girl score higher on the test than the other students? It must be a mistake." At North Carolina College, color was used in deciding status. The faculty assumed that light-skinned students were more intelligent, and they were always a bit surprised when a dark-skinned student did well, especially if she was a girl.

When the grades for the first quarter came out, I had the highest average in the freshmen class. The chairman's wife called me into her office again, pulled out a copy of the freshman English final exam, and asked me to retake it. I couldn't believe it. It Was so incredible to her that I had the highest score in the class that she was trying to test me again. I felt rage so intense that I wanted to start hitting her. I have seldom hated anyone so deeply. I handed the exam back to her and walked out.

听力原文:M: What did you do to celebrate your birthday?

W: My friends took me to see Cirque du Soleil. What a show! It was unlike anything I had ever seen before. The performances were mesmerizing---they were art!

M: Wow, it sounds like you really enjoyed yourself. What distinguishes Cirque du Soleil from other circuses?

W: It simply has class. The acts have a certain style. that you don't see in other circuses. There is soft, romantic lighting and fantastic music which ranges from classical to jazz. But, what really sets the circus apart is the costumes with their beautiful fabrics, rich colors and fairy tale designs.

M: It sounds amazing, but I always feel a little guilty when I go to the circus. It seems so cruel to use animals for our entertainment.

W: Cirque du Soleil doesn't believe in using animals. They rely on human performers including acrobats, trapeze artists and contortionists.

M: That's wonderful. I wish other circuses would do the same.

W: And the human performances are much more fun. There was one clown who actually juggled eight wine glasses at one time. I couldn't believe it. There was also a magician who performed a series of comical tricks involving members of the audience. I loved the whole thing. You really should see them while they are in town.

M: I think I'll go this weekend.

(23)

A.It's a concert.

B.It's a circus.

C.It's a game.

D.It's a movie.

听力原文: Americans suffer from an overdose of work. Regardless of who they are or what they do. Americans spend more time at work than that any time since World War II. In 1950, the US had fewer working hours than any other industrialized country.

Today, it exceeds every country but Japan where industrialized employees load 2155 hours a year compared with 1951 in the US and 1603 in the former West Germany. Between 1969 and 1989, employed Americans add an average of 138 hours to their yearly work schedules. The workweek has remained above 40 hours. But people are working more weeks each year. Specifically pay time off holidays, vacations, sick leave shrank by 50% in the 1980s.

As corporations have experienced stiff (艰难的, 严酷的) competitions and slow in growth of productivity, they have pressed employees to work longer. Cost-cutting lay-offs in the 1980s reduce the professional and managerial runs, leaving fewer people to get the job done. In lower paid occupations where wages have been reduced, workers have added hours in overtime or extra jobs to preserve their living standards. The government estimates that more than 7 million people hold a second job.

For the first time, large numbers of people say they want to cut back(削减,减少) on working hours even it means earning less money. But most employers are unwilling to let them do so. The government which has stepped back from its traditional role as a regulator of work time should take steps to make shorter hours possible.

(33)

A.Germany.

B.Japan.

C.The U.S.

听力原文: My first semester of college was the worst I've been through. I had made plans during the summer to share an apartment with two of my close friends from high school. But before we moved in,problems started developing.

One of the two girls I was to share an apartment with was going to work instead of going to college。 However,a week before we were to move in,she found out that she didn't get the job. She is forced to live at home and look for work. The rest two of us lasted for a month and then agreed that we couldn't make it with the higher monthly rent payments. I started looking around.

I found another apartment and the rent wasn't bad. The place was noisy, but it was the best I could afford for the time. However, one day when I returned,I saw smoke coming from the back of the house. The cottage had caught fire, and my room was a burned mess。I was once more out of a place to stay.

I finally gave up looking around and moved home. I had to drive forty miles to school every day,so I almost spent as much on gas as I would have on lodging. I was very bored I almost lost the will to study. It had been really a bad semester!

(33)

听力原文: There're more than 40 universities in Britain—nearly twice as many as in 1960. During the 1960s eight new ones were founded, and ten other new were created by converting old colleges of technology into universities. Mean- while the number of students more than doubled. By 1973 about 10% of men aged from eighteen to twenty-one were in universities and about 5 %of women. All the universities are private institutions. (12) Each has its own governing councils, including some local businessmen and local politicians as well as a few academics. The state began to give grants to them fifty years ago, and by 1970 each university derived nearly all its funds from state grants. Students have to pay fees and living costs, but every student may receive from local authority of the place where he lives a personal grant which is enough to pay his full costs, including lodging and food unless his parents are rich. (13) Most students take jobs in the summer holiday, but they don't normally do outside work during the academic year. (14) The Department of Education takes responsibility for the payment covering the whole expenditure of the universities, but it doesn't exercise direct control. It can have an important influence on new developments through its power to distribute funds, but it takes the advice of the University Grants Committee, a body that is mainly composed of academics.

A.More than 40.

B.Less than 18.

C.More than 20.

听力原文:W: OK. This will be my treat.

M: Oh, no, you don't.

W: All right, then, we'll go Dutch.

M: Next time. This time you're my guest.

W: Gee, it's crowded.

M: Look, one empty small table by that big picture window over there. Let's go and get it.

W: Ah, this is a pretty spot. You can see the people passing by while you eat.

M: And they can see you eat while they pass and that's a pretty picture, too.

W: Is this the only type place for lunch?

M: There are some lunch counters, but they serve only a few specialties.

W: Why can't you eat lunch in a restaurant?

M: Well, you can, but the service isn't as fast. Most people only have half an hour to one hour for lunch. The time is too short for them to eat in a restaurant or to run back and forth from home to school or office, because the cities are too big.

W: So they eat quickly at the lunch counters?

M: Right. Lunch is normally a light meal anyway. Workers must either take lunch with them or get it near the place where they work.

W: What about the children?

M: Kids in school take sandwiches, fruit and cookies along with them or eat in school cafeterias.

W: This is delicious. If all the food tastes as good as this, I don't miss our own food too much. I like American food!

M: I'm glad you enjoy it. Are you done?

W: I'm full.

M: Are you sure. You can get seconds.

W: I'm positively full. I have no more room. Wow, this will last me for a week. Thank you very much.

M: Don't mention it.
