From: Jeff Pages

Subject: Bare feet in the rain

Date: 29 Jan 02 17:38:02 EST

It has been raining constantly in Sydney for the last two days, after what has so far been a very dry summer. My walk from the railway station to work takes in about 2km of forest trail, with a varying surface of gravel, sand, clay and sandstone outcrops. In the dry it is a pleasant barefoot walk but in the wet it becomes a magical experience, particularly at this time of the year with the temperature around 24 ℃ (75 F).

On the steeper sections of the trail there is water cascading down the rocks and it feels great clambering up with the water splashing over my feet.

The forecast is for the rain to continue till at least the middle of next week so I should have nice muddy wet feet for a few more days yet.

Happy barefootin',

Jeff

A.He does not like the dry seasons.

第4题
听力原文: How many of you are familiar with the name Jeff Bezos? OK, how about Amazon.com?
Have you heard of that? Well, Amazon.com is the world's first and largest Internet bookstore, and Jeff Bezos is the man who started Amazon.com back in 1995. Five years later, Amazon.com was serving millions of customers in 120 different countries. Amazing, right? And this is the reason why, in 1999, Jeff Bezos was selected as Time Magazine's Person of the Year, a very great honor.

Now, Jeff Bezos is actually not the topic of my lecture today, but he is a perfect example of my topic, which is about entrepreneurs. It's a French word meaning a person who starts a completely new business or industry, um, someone who does something no one else has done before, like Jeff Bezos, who started the very first Internet bookstore. Entrepreneurs like Jeff Bezos are very highly respected in American society and, I think, in many other countries too.

OK, let's begin by looking at the characteristics of entrepreneurs. There are two qualities that I think all entrepreneurs have in common. First, entrepreneurs have vision. I mean that they have the ability to see opportunities that other people simply do not see. Let's look again at the example of Jeff Bezos. One day in 1994, he was surfing the Internet when suddenly he had a brilliant idea= why not use the Internet to sell products? Remember, at that time, no one was using the Internet in that way. After doing some research, Bezos decided that the product he wanted to sell was books. That's how Amazon.com got its start.

The other quality that I think all entrepreneurs possess is that they are not afraid to take risks. As an example, let me tell you about Fred Smith, who founded Federal Express, the company that delivers packages anywhere in the United States overnight. Smith first suggested the idea for his company in a college term paper. Do you know what grade he got on it? A "C"! But this didn't stop him, and today his company is worth more than two billion dollars and employs more than 25,000 people.

Now let's take a look at their backgrounds, and here we'll find lots of differences. First of all, some entrepreneurs are well educated, like Jeff Bezos, who graduated from Princeton University. But others, like Bill Gates, the founder of Microsoft Corporation, never even finished college. Next, some entrepreneurs come from rich families, like Fred Smith, the founder of Federal Express. In contrast, other entrepreneurs come from poor families. A great example is Andrew Grove, the former chairman of the Intel computer company, who was born in Hungary and came to America as a refugee after World War Ⅱ.

15. When was Amazon.com serving millions of customers in 120 different countries?

16.Among these entrepreneurs, who graduated from Princeton University?

17.Which statement is NOT true about Fred Smith?

18.Which quality does Jeff Bezos have?

(35)

A.1990.

B.1995.

C.1997.

D.2000.

Callisto Retail (Callisto) is an on-line reseller of local craft products related to the historic culture of the country of Callistan. The business started ten years ago as a hobby of two brothers, Jeff and George. The brothers produced humorous, short video clips about Callistan which were posted on their website and became highly popular. They decided to use the website to try to sell Callistan merchandise and good initial sales made them believe that they had a viable business idea.

Callisto has gone from strength to strength and now boasts sales of $120m per annum, selling anything related to Callistan. Callisto is still very much the brothers’ family business. They have gathered around themselves a number of strategic partners into what Jeff describes as a virtual company. Callisto has the core functions of video clip production, finance and supplier relationship management. The rest of the functions of the organisation (warehousing, delivery and website development) are outsourced to strategic partners.

The brothers work from their family home in the rural North of Callistan while other Callisto employees work from their homes in the surrounding villages and towns. These employees are involved in video editing, system maintenance, handling customer complaints and communication with suppliers and outsourcers regarding inventory. The employees log in to Callisto’s systems via the national internet infrastructure. The outsourced functions are handled by multinational companies of good reputation who are based around the world. The brothers have always been fascinated by information technology and so they depend on email and electronic data interchange to communicate with their product suppliers and outsourcing partners.

Recently, there have been emails from regular customers of the Callisto website complaining about slow or non-delivery of orders that they have placed. George has commented that this represents a major threat to Callisto as the company operates on small profit margins, relying on volume to drive the business. He believes that sales growth will drive the profitability of the business due to its cost structure.

Jeff handles the management of outsourcing and has been reviewing the contracts that exist between Callisto and its strategic partner for warehousing and delivery, RLR Logistics. The current contract for warehousing and delivery is due for renewal in two months and currently, has the following service level agreements (SLAs):

1. RLR agree to receive and hold inventory from Callisto’s product suppliers.

2. RLR agree to hold 14 days inventory of Callisto’s products.

3. RLR agree to despatch from their warehouse any order passed from Callisto within three working days, inventory allowing.

4. RLR agree to deliver to customers anywhere in Callistan within two days of despatch.

Breaches in these SLAs incur financial penalties on a sliding scale depending on the number and severity of the problems. Each party to the contract collects their own data on performance and this has led to disagreements in the past over whether service levels have been achieved although no penalties have been triggered to date. The most common disagreement arises over inventory levels held by RLR with RLR claiming that it cannot be expected to deliver products that are late in arriving to inventory due to the product suppliers’ production and delivery issues.

Required:

Assess the difficulties of performance measurement and performance management in complex business structures such as Callisto, especially in respect of the performance of their employees and strategic partners.

The Frugal Gourmet Cooks American

by Jeff Smith

Our real American foods have come from our soil and have been used by many groups—those who already lived here and those who have come here to live. The Native Americans already had developed an interesting cuisine using the abundant foods that were so prevalent.

The influence that the English had upon our national eating habits is easy to see. They were a tough lot, those English, and they ate in a tough manner. They wiped their mouths on the tablecloth, if there happened to be one, and they ate until you would expect them to burst. European travelers to this country in those days were most often shocked by American eating habits, which included too much fat and too much salt and too much liquor. Not much has changed! And, the Revolutionists refused to use the fork since it marked them as Europeans. The fork was not absolutely common on the American dinner table until about the time of the Civil War, the 1860s. Those English were a tough lot.

Other immigrant groups added their own touches to the preparation of our New World food products. The groups that came still have a special sense of self-identity through their ancestral heritage, but they see themselves as Americans. This special self-identity through your ancestors who came from other lands was supposed to disappear in this country. The term melting pot was first used in reference to America in the late 1700s, so this belief that we would all become the same has been with us for a long time. Thank goodness it has never worked. The various immigrant groups continue to add flavor to the pot, all right, but you can pick out the individual flavors easily.

The largest ancestry group in America is the English. There are more people in America who claim to have come from English blood than there are in England. But is their food English? Thanks be to God, it is not! It is American. The second largest group is the Germans, then the Irish, the Afro-Americans, the French, the Italians, the Scottish, and the Polish. The Mexican and American Indian groups are all smaller than any of the above, though they were the original cooks in this country.

Which of the following statements is nearly identical in meaning with the sentence "they ate until you would expect them to burst" in the second paragraph?

A.You bet they would never stop to eat till they are full.

B.What you can expect is that they would not stop eating unless there was no more food.

C.The only thing you would expect is that they wouldn't stop eating till they had had enough of the food.

D.The only thing is that they wouldn't stop eating till they felt sick.

Same-sex couples Paul Katami (L), Jeff Zarillo (2nd L), and Kris Perry (2nd R) and Sandy S

Same-sex couples Paul Katami (L), Jeff Zarillo (2nd L), and Kris Perry (2nd R) and Sandy Stier pose for photographs before the start of their trial in San Francisco, California January 11, 2010. California's ban on gay marriage goes to trial on Monday in a federal case that plaintiffs hope to take all the way to the US Supreme Court and overturn bans throughout the nation.

Two Californian men challenging a ban on same-sex marriage on Monday said they had been a couple for nine years and felt like third-class citizens, leading them to launch the federal case which could set a national precedent. The men and a lesbian couple unable to marry in California hope to take their case against the state' s Proposition 8 ban on same-sex marriage all the way to the US Supreme Court and to overturn bans throughout the nation. A loss in the top court, two ranks above the action in the case which began on Monday, would seriously undermine efforts to win gay marriage rights in state courts.

The United States is divided on same-sex marriage. It is legal in only five states, though most of those, and the District of Columbia, approved it last year. Approval of Prop 8 in November 2008 was a sweet victory for social conservatives in a state with a liberal, trend-setting reputation, and maintained the steady success they have scored on the issue at the ballot box. Where it is legal, gay marriage has been championed by courts and legislatures, not voters.

"I don't think of myself as a bad person," said Paul Katami, describing the persecution he felt from a media campaign warning California parents to "protect" their children by voting against same-sex unions in the 2008 poll. He and his would-be husband, Jeffrey Zarrillo, described slights in gay life that ranged from being pelted with rocks and eggs in college to the awkwardness of checking into a hotel and not being able to clarify the relationship. "Being able to call him my husband is so definitive," Katami said. "There is no subtlety to it. It is absolute. " Gays and lesbians have nearly equal rights under domestic partnership laws, but the two men said that left them feeling second-or third-class citizens and they wanted to be married to have kids. "We hear a lot of 'What's the big deal?' The big deal is creating a separate category for us," Katami said.

Gay rights lawyers in the case describe their battle as a continuation of the fight against racist laws stopping whites and blacks from marrying. Marriage is a fundamental constitutional right, and in addition gays and lesbians deserve special protection from discrimination, they say.

What is current situation of the nation on same-sex union?
