Telephone, television, radio, and the Internet help people communicate with each other. Be
cause of these devices, ideas and news of events spread quickly all over the world. For example, with in seconds, people can know the results of an election in another country. An international football match comes into the homes of everyone with a television set. News of a disaster, such as a flood, can bring help from distant countries. Within hours, help is on the way. This is because modern technology information travels fast.

How has this speed of communication changed the world? To many people, the world has become smaller. Of course, this does not mean that the world is actually physically smaller. It means that the world seems smaller. Two hundred years ago, communication between the continents took a long time. All news was carried on ships that took weeks or even months to cross the oceans. In the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries, it took six weeks for news from Europe to reach the Americas. This time difference influenced people's actions. For example, a few battles in the war of 1812 between England and the United States could have been avoided. A peace agreement had already been signed. Peace was made in England, but the news of peace took six weeks to reach America. During these six weeks, the large and serious Battle of New Orleans was fought. Many people lost their lives after a peace treaty had been signed. They would not have died if news had come in time. In the past, communication took much more time than it does now. There was a good reason why the world seemed so much larger than it does today.

News spreads fast because of______.

A.modern transportation

B.new technology

C.the changes of the world

D.a peace agreement

Directions: In this section, you will hear 3 short passages. At the end of each passage, you will hear some questions. Both the passage and the questions will be spoken only once. After you hear a question, you must choose the best answer from the four choices marked A, B, C and D.

听力原文: Many Americans are moving to big cities. At the same time, many Americans are leaving the cities and looking for the "good life" in the country. Although they think they know what they want, they don't always find it.

Unless you know something about small-town life, you may be in for some big surprise. There are not so many job opportunities there. People are not always happy about having newcomers move in. They like to keep things the way they are. And although there is usually a movie theater and a couple of restaurants, there isn't a lot to do at night.

But if you're looking for a more relaxed way of life, if you want to save money, and if you can make your own good times, small-town life may be for you. Before you decide whether or not to leave the city, spend a couple of weeks in a village. Look around and talk to people. Think what it would be like to live there fifty two weeks a year. And then, if you're sure, you can make the big move.

(27)

A.Because life in the country is more interesting.

B.Because they are in search of the "good life."

C.Because there are more job opportunities.

D.Because people there are very kind to the new comers.

Rome-Doctors and medical groups around the world last weekend reacted with strong opposition to the news that an Italian specialist is going in for cloning (克隆) the first human baby.

Dr. Severino Antinori, who is the head of a hospital in Rome, has been referred to in an Arab newspaper as claiming that one of his patients is eight weeks pregnant (怀孕) with a cloned baby.

Antinori refused to comment on the reports, but he said he hoped to produce a cloned embryo (卵) within two years. So far seven different kinds of mammals have already been successfully cloned, including sheep, cats and most recently rabbits.

Professor Rudolf Jaenisch said: "I find it astonishing that people do this where the result can be foretold that it will not be a normal baby. It is using humans as guinea pigs. It makes people feel sick." But Ronald Green, director of a College in the US, said it is unlikely that an eight-week-old pregnancy would lead to a birth.

So far all cloned animals have suffered from some different serious disorders, many of them dying soon after their births.

The underlined words "go in for" (Para. 1) most probably means" ______ ".

He began to search his household, and learned what had happened to the four missing volumes.

"A man came to the door this morning", said his little daughter, "and he didn't know how to get from here to Torrington, or from Torrington to Winsted, and he was a nice man, much nicer than Robert, and so I gave him four of your books. After all, there are thirteen volumes in the Oxford English Dictionary, and that leaves you with nine".

IV. Reading Comprehension. (52 points) Text I Wedding ceremonies in the United States vary as much as the people do. But many weddings, no matter where or how they are performed, include certain traditional customs. For instance, the bride and bridegroom often exchange rings at the ceremony. The rings are usually worn on the fourth finger of the left hand, and are exchanged in the middle of the ceremony. Today, the rings show the couple’s love for one another. After the ceremony, the couple is often showered with handfuls of uncooked rice by friends and family. Rice, as we know, shows productivity and harvest. And then, there is often a party, where the food is so plentiful that it almost takes the attention away from the people. Soon the bride stands in the center of the room, often on a chair, and throws her flowers to the unmarried women at the party. Tradition says that whoever catches the flowers will be the next bride. Some women eagerly try to catch the flower; others shy away. And then it is time for the bride and the groom to set off the tradition of a honeymoon, a trip after wedding. The trip nowadays varies greatly by wealth, time and preference. Sometimes the couple will spend a single night at a nearby hotel; or they may spend two weeks at a faraway foreign city as well. 1. According to the passage, ___________.

A、American wedding ceremonies are somewhat traditional.

B、American wedding ceremonies provide a lot of flowers

C、American wedding ceremonies are preferable

D、American wedding ceremonies are simple

听力原文: Some desert animals can survive the very strong summer heat and dryness because they have very unusual characteristics. The camel, for example, can bear an increase in the temperature of its body and its blood of 9℃. In addition, it can drink an enormous amount of water at one time, then store sufficient water in its red blood cells and other parts of its body to supply its needs for two weeks or more. However, most animals need to maintain a fairly constant body temperature, and will die if it rises more than 5℃. Therefore, they need to find some ways to avoid the strong sun rays. Nor can many animal either store or produce water in their bodies as the camel can. So they must find ways to reduce water loss from their bodies to the lowest degree.

Because very few desert animals can survive the high rays and the temperature, most of them are active during the night. Only after the sun has set does the desert come fully of life. The night is relatively cool, and the darkness provides protection, not only from the sun but also from other animals and from the birds. So the coming of darkness is the signal for the large majority of animals and insects to continue their search of water and food, when morning comes, most of them seek shelter again; many go underground; nearly all find somewhere shady and they can avoid the sun rays there.

What is the best title of the passage?

A.Desert Animal.

B.Camel, An Unusual Animal.

C.A Typical Summer Day and Night of Desert.

D.The Importance of Water on Desert.
