D

Our surroundings are being polluted faster than ever and it seems that people cannot prevent it. Time is bringing us more people, and more people will bring us more industry', more cars, larger cities, and the growing use of man-made materials.

What can explain and settle this problem? The fact is that pollution is caused by man—by his desire (欲望) for a modem way of life. We make "increasing industrialization" (工业化) our first aim. So we are often ready to offer everything: clean air, pure water, good food, our health and the future of our children. There is a constant flow of people from the countryside into the cities, eager for the achievements of our modem society. But as our technological achievements have grown in the last twenty years, pollution has become a serious problem.

Isn't it time we stopped to ask ourslves where we are going—and why? It makes one think of the story about the pilot (飞行员) who told his passengers over the loudspeaker: "I've some good news and some bad news. The good news is that we're making rapid progress at 530 miles per hour. The bad news is that we are lost and don't know where we're going." The sad fact is that this becomes a true story when speaking of our modern society.

Man cannot prevent the world from being polluted because ______.

A. the population of the world is increasing faster

B. people use too many man-made materials

C. we have more industry

D. we are producing more cars, trucks and buses

One silly question I simply can't stand is "How do you feel". Usually the
question is asked of a man in action--a man on the go, walking along the street, or busily working at his desk. So what do you expect him to say? He'll probably say, "Fine, I'm all right." But "you've put a bug in his ear" — maybe now he's not sure. If you are a good friend, you may have seen something in his face, or his walk, that he did not realize that morning. It starts him worrying a little. First thing you know, he looks in a mirror to sec if everything is all right, while you go merrily on your way asking someone else, "How do you feel?"

Every question has its time and place. It's perfectly acceptable, for instance, to ask "How do you feel?" if you're visiting a close friend in the hospital. But if the fellow is walking on both legs, hurrying to make a train, or sitting at his desk working, it's no time to ask him that silly question.

When George Bernard Shaw, the famous writer of plays was in his eighties, someone asked him "How do you feel", Shaw put him in his place. "When you reach my age", he said, "either you feel all right or you're dead."

2).The question "How do you feel?" seems to be correct and suitable when asked of ________ .

A. a man working at his desk

B. a person having lost a close friend

C. a stranger who looks somewhat worried

D. a friend who is ill

3).The writer seems to feel that a busy man should _________ .

A. be praised for his efforts

B. never be asked any question

C. not be bothered

D. be discouraged from working so hard

4).George Bernard Shaw's reply in the passage shows his ________ .

A. cheerfulness

B. cleverness

C. ability

D. politeness

5)."You've put a bug in his ear "means that you've _________ .

A. made him laugh

B. shown concern for him

C. made fun of him

D. given him some kind of warning

听力原文:(Woman—Susan Man—David)

W: What is so interesting in that book, David?

M: Oh, Susan, it's a book about the changes in weather.

W: We certainly are having different weather this year, aren't we?

M: That's why I borrowed this book from the library. I wanted to read about differences in climate.

W: Does the book talk about cold weather like we've been having?

M: As a matter of fact, it does. It tells how weather seems to come in cycles. There will be periods of very cold winters and very hot summers.

W: Well, we've had both this year, haven't we?

M: Yes, and according to the book, that type of weather will last for several years.

W: Then what happens? Does it just continue to get colder and hotter?

M: No, that was what I was afraid of, but the book says that after the very cold/very hot cycle is over, there will be a time of moderate weather.

W: What do you mean by "moderate"?

M: The book says that the weather will be cold in the winter but not too cold. In the summer, the temperature will not be so high as it was this last summer.

W: Will it last for several years?

M: It seems that it will. It's a cycle, just like we're having now. Then it will go back to the very cold and very hot.

W: I'll look forward to the moderate years, then.

M: Me, too!

(20)

A.The climate in cold countries.

B.The weather for tomorrow.

C.The changes in weather.

D.The cold winter.

听力原文:W: When you write a novel, do you know where you're going, Dr. James?

M: Yes, you must, really. If you're writing the classical detective story, because it must be so carefully plotted and so carefully clued. I have schemes. I have charts. I have diagrams. It doesn't mean to say I always get it right, but I do plan before I begin writing. But what is so fascinating is how a book changes during the process of writing. It seems to me that creative writing is a process of revelation, really, rather than of creativity in the ordinary sense.

W: When you're planning the basic structure, do you like to go away to be sure that you're by yourself?

M: I need to be by myself certainly, absolutely. I can't even bare anybody else in the house. I don't mind much where I am as long as I' ve got enough space to write, but I need to be completely alone. W: Is that very important to you?

M: Oh, yes. I've never been lonely in all my life.

W: How extraordinary! Never?

M: No, never.

W: You're very lucky. Someone once said that there's a bit of ice at the heart of every writer.

M: Yes. I think this is true. The writer can stand aside from experience and look at it, watch it happening. There is this "detachment" and I realize that there are obviously experiences which would overwhelm everyone. But very often, a writer can appear to stand aside, and this detachment makes people feel there's a bit of ice in the heart.

19. Q: What is the key to write a good classical detective story according to the man?

20. Q:What does the man mainly need when working on a book?.

21. Q:What does the man say about writers?

(24)

A.Unique descriptive skills.

B.Good knowledge of readers' tastes.

C.Colorful world experiences.

D.Careful plotting and clueing.
