The Greatest Show on Earth

The Olympic Games are the greatest festival of sport in the world Every four years, a hundred or more countries send their best sportsmen to compete for the highest honors in sport As many as 6,000 people take part in over 20 sports For the winners, there are gold medals and glory But there is honor, too, for all who compete, win or lose That is in the spirit of the Olympics--to take part is what matters

The Olympic Games always start in a bright color and action The teams of all the nations parade in the opening ceremony and march round the track The custom is for the Greek team to march in first For it was in Greece that the Olympics began The team of the country where the Games are being held -- the host country -- marches in last

The runner with the Olympic torch (火炬) then enters the stadium and lights the flame A sportsman from the host country takes the Olympic oath (宣誓) on behalf of all the competitors The judges and officials also take an oath After the sportsmen march out of the stadium, the host country puts on a wonderful display

The competitions begin the next day there are usually more than twenty sports in the Games The rule is that there must be at least fifteen The main events are in track and field, but it is a few days before these sports start Each day the competitors take part in a different sport--riding, shooting, swimming, and cross-country running Points are gained for each event Medals are awarded for the individual winners and for national teams

More and more women are taking part in the games they first competed in 1900, in tennis and golf, which are no longer held in the Olympics Women's swimming events were introduced in 1912 But it was not until 1928 that there were any track and field events for women Now, they compete in all but half a dozen of the sports In horse riding, shooting, and boat racing, they may compete in the same events as the men

第 31 题 Why is there honor for the losers as well as for the winners?

A.Because failure is the mother of success

B.Because losers need encouragement

C.Because losers and winners should be equally treated

D.Because what really matters is take part in the Olympic Games

根据短文回答 31~35 题。

Teaching Poetry

No poem should ever be discussed or "analyzed", until it has been read aloud by someone, teacher or student. Better still, perhaps, is the practice of reading it twice, once at the beginning of the discussion and once at the end, so the sound of the poem is the last thing one hears of it.

All discussions of poetry are, in fact, preparations for reading it aloud, and the reading of the poem is, finally, the most telling "interpretation" of it, suggesting tone, rhythm, and meaning all at once. Hearing a poet read the work .in his or her own voice, on records or on film, is obviously a special reward. But even those aids to teaching can not replace the student and teacher reading it or, best of all, reciting (背诵) it.

I have come to think, in fact, that time spent reading a poem aloud is much more important than "analyzing" it, if them isn't time for both. I think one of our goals as teachers of English is to have students love poetry. Poetry is "a criticism of life", and "a heightening (提升) of life". It is "an approach to the truth of feeling", and it "can save your life". It also deserves a place in the teaching of language and literature more central than it presently occupies.

I am not saying that every English teacher must teach poetry. Those who don't like it should not be forced to put that dislike on anyone else. But those who do teach poetry must keep in mind a few things about its essential nature, about its sound as well as its sense, and they must make room in the classroom for hearing poetry as well as thinking about it.

第 31 题 To have a better understanding of a poem, one should()

A.discuss it with others

B.analyze it by oneself

C.copy it down in a notebook

D.practice reading it aloud

根据短文回答 31~35 题。

Sleepless at Night

It was a normal summer night. Humidity (湿气) hung in the thick air.

I couldn't go to sleep, partly because of my cold and partly because of my expectations for the next day. My, mum had said that tomorrow was going to be a surprise.

Sweat stuck to my aching body. Finally, I gathered enough strength to sit up. I looked out of my small window into the night. There was a big bright moon hanging in the sky, giving off a magic glow.

I couldn't stand the pressure anymore, so I did what I always do to make myself feel better. I went to the bathroom and picked up my toothbrush and toothpaste. I cleaned my teeth as if there was no tomorrow. Back and forth, up and down.

Then I walked downstairs to look for some signs of movement, some life. Gladiator, my cat, frightened me as he meowed (喵喵地唱出) his sad song. He was on the old orange couch (长沙发), sitting up on his front legs, waiting for something to happen. He looked at me as if to say, "I’m lonely, pet me. I need a good hug (紧抱).”Even the couch begged me to sit on it.

In one movement I settled down onto the soft couch. This couch represented my parents' marriage, my birth, and hundreds of other little events.

As I held Gladiator, my heart started beating heavily. My mind was flooded with questions: What's life? Am I really alive? Are you listening to me? Every time I moved my hand down Gladiator's body, I had a new thought; each touch sang a different song.

I forgot all about the heat and the next day's surprise. The atmosphere was so full of Warmth and silence that I sank into its arms. Falling asleep with the big cat in my arms, I felt all my worries slowly move away.

根据短文回答 31~35 题。

Two People, Two Paths

You must be familiar with the situation: Dad's driving; Mum's telling him where to go. He's sure that they need to turn left. But she says it's not for another two blocks. Who has the better sense of direction? Men or women.

They both do, a new study says, but in different ways.

Men and women, Canadian researchers have found, have different methods of finding their way. Men look quickly at landmarks (地标) and head off in what they think is the right direction. Women, however, try to picture the whole route in detail and then follow the path in their head.

Women tend to be more detailed," said Edward Cornell, who led the study, "while

men tend to be a little bit faster and...a little bit more intuitive (直觉感知的)."

In fact, said Cornell, "sense of direction" isn't one skill but two.

The first is the "survey method". This is when you see an area from above, such as a printed map. You can see, for example, where the hospital is, where the church is and that the supermarket is on its right.

The second skill is the "route method". This is when you use a series of directions. You start from the hospital, then turn left, turn right, go uphill -- and then you see the supermarket.

Men are more likely to use the survey method while women are more likely to use one route and follow directions.

Both work, and neither is better.

Some scientists insist that these different skills have a long history. They argue it is because of the difference in traditional roles.

In ancient times, young men often went far away with the older men to fish or hunt. The trip took hours or days and covered unfamiliar places. The only way to know where you were was to use the survey method to remember landmarks -- the mountains, the lakes and so on.

The women, on the other hand, took young girls out to find fruits and plants. These activities were much closer to home but required learning well-used paths. So, women's sense of space was based on learning certain routes.

第 31 题 When finding his way, Dad tends to rely on().

A.his intuitive knowledge

B.his book knowledge

C.Mum's assistance

D.the police's assistance

根据短文回答 31~35 题。

A Society Without a Formal Authority

In the seventeenth century, European soldiers who came across some Indian groups in the western Great Lakes found that several native tribes(部落)were living in the area without a formal leadership system. They appeared to be" quite friendly with each other without a formal authority! "

Not only did the Indians appear to lack a formal system of authority, but they also deeply hated any efforts to control their actions. All members of the tribes knew what was required of them by lifelong(一生的)familiarity with the tasks of the area。These tasks tended to be simple, since the Indians' rate of social change was slow. Thus, although subgroups such as soldiers had recognized leaders,no real authority was required.Rather than giving direct orders(which were considered rough),members of the tribes would arouse others to action by examples.

It would be difficult,if not impossible,to carry out such a system in our own society. Most of US have grown up under one authority or another for as long as we can remember. Our parents, our teachers.our bosses, our government all have the recognized right under certain conditions to tell US what to d0.The authority is so much a part of our culture that it is hard for US to imagine a workable society without it.We have been used to relying on authority to get things done and would probably be uncomfortable with the Indian methods of examples on a large scale.

Of course, the major reason why the Indian system would not be suitable for US is that our society is too large. The number of tasks that various members of our society have to perform. often under tight time and resource limitations could not be treated by the Indian system. In modern societies, the formal authority system is necessary to achieve any social objectives.

第 31 题 Which of the following statements about the European soldiers is correct?()

A.They had no leaders.

B.They treated the Indian groups well.

C.They came across some Indian groups.

D.They found the Indian groups friendly to them.

根据短文回答 31~35 题。

Why Not Eat Breakfast?

Breakfast is not only the most important meal of the day, it is also the most neglected or skipped.Common reasons for not eating breakfast include lack of time, not feeling hungry, traditional dislike for breakfast, and dieting.

Breakfast simply means" break the fast."Your body spends at least six to twelve.hours each night in a fasting state. In the morning your body needs energy to rev up(转动起来)、into high gear for the day's work ahead.

If you skip breakfast, you are likely to concentrate less effectively in the late morning, feel irritable, short—tempered(易怒的),tired,or weak.

When you choose not to eat breakfast, your body stays in slow gear. Also, people who skip breakfast often binge(无节制地大吃)later in the day at other meals or eat a high calorie(高卡路里)snack in the morning.Breakfast eaters tend to eat less fat during the day, have more strength and endurance and better concentration and problem-solving ability.

A good breakfast should provide up t0 113 0f your total calorie needs for the day.On the average,we eat 400 less calories for breakfast than for dinner. If breakfast doesn't appeal to you in the morning, try eating a lighter dinner earlier in the evening or save half your dinner for breakfast in the morning.

1f you still aren't hungry in the morning, start with something small like juice or toast or have a mid—morning snack later when you are hungry.

Not eating breakfast can also cause you to overeat, since a fall in blood sugar often makes you feel very hungry later. To make matters worse, since your body is in a slowed state,it will not be able to burn those extra calories very efficiently. If you feed your body healthy snacks and meals throughout the day, you are less likely to become extremely hungry and stuff yourself as soon as you begin to eat.

Since breakfast is the first and most important meal of the day, choosing the right fuel is important. The best breakfast foods are fruits, juice, lean meat, and grain products such as breads, rice, noodles, and cereals.

第 31 题 The word "fast" in the phrase" break the fast" in paragraph 2 means()

A."a series of quick actions"

B."a habit of eatin9".

C."a strict rule".

D."a period of not eatin9".

Sleep Necessary for Memories

Burning the midnight oil before an exam or interview does harm to the performance according to a recent research which found that sleep is necessary for memories to be taken back into the brain.A good night's sleep within 30 hours of trying to remember.A new task is a required condition of having good recall in the weeks ahead, scientists have found.

The research, published in the December issue of Nature Neuroscience, showed that it was the act of sleep, rather than the simple passage of time, that was critical for long-term memory formation.

"We think that getting that first night's sleep starts the process of memory consolidation(巩固),"said Robert Stick gold,a sleep researcher at Harvard Medical School who conducted the latest study.

"It seems that memories normally wash out of the brain unless some process nails them down.My suspicion is that sleep is one of those things that does the nailing down,"Professor Stick gold said.

With about one in five people claiming that they are so chronically short of sleep that it affects their daily activities, the latest work emphasizes the less well-understood side effect-serious memory impairment(损害).

Volunteers in an' experiment found it easier to remember a memory task if they were;allowed to sleep that night. But for those kept awake,no amount of subsequent sleep made up for the initial loss.

Professor Stick gold's team trained 24 people to identify the direction of three

diagonal(斜线形的)bars flashed for a sixtieth of a second on a computer screen full of horizontal(水平的)stripes.

Half of the subjects were、kept awake that night, while the others slept. Both groups were allowed to sleep for the second and third nights to make up for any differences in tiredness between the volunteers.

Those who slept the first night were significantly and consistently better at remembering the task while the second group showed no improvement despite enjoying two nights of catch-up sleep.

第 31 题 The research published in nature Neuroscience showed that what was essential to the formation of long-term memory was()

A.intelligence.

B.time.

C.food.

D.sleep.
