It is now necessary to increase the flow rate to the cyclone (and hence the inlet velocity) by 25 percent (i.e., the new velocity will be 1.25 times the old velocity). Nothing else will change. The cyclone is believed to obey Eq. (9.18). Estimate the new cut diameter.

听力原文: In the United States, couples usually receive gifts from their relatives and blends when they get married. Sometimes a bride will exchange a gift for something else if she doesn't find it useful. We give gifts to express our good wishes for the marriage, but gifts aren't necessary for the marriage itself. However, in some societies gifts are very important, and the marriage isn' t legal without them. One type of gift is called bride service. A young husband must work for his wife' s family. He may work for as long as fifteen years or until the third child is born. Bride service may seem strange to us, but it is necessary in societies where people don' t have money or material things to exchange at marriage.

听力原文: Foreign custom is much more strict than Chinese custom in the matter of replying to invitations. When you receive an invitation you should answer it immediately, saying definitely whether you are able to accept it or not. This is because the hostess probably wants to have a certain number of guests at her table, and if you cannot come she will want to ask someone else. And it is not polite to ask anyone at the last minute. So you should let her know as soon as possible whether you can come or not. Sometimes one is invited to a large tea generally in honor of some special person or occasion by written, printed, or engraved invitation cards, ff a great many people are invited, it is not necessary to reply to the invitation unless it bears the letters" R. S. V. P". Whenever the letters "R. S. V. P" appear on an invitation it is absolutely necessary to reply. These letters stand for the French words "Respondez s'il vous plait," which mean, "will you please reply?" Perhaps your hostess needs to know how much room or food or entertainment is required.

听力原文: In all history, when men have had free time they have turned to a hobby for pleasure. The cavemen were our first known creative hobbyists. In the free time after the hunting and fighting necessary to keep them alive, some turned to drawing. From the dawn of history to the present day men have left records of the fun they have had "riding a hobby".
George Washington was one of the first busy hobbyists in American history. As a youngster he was interested in mathematics. This interest led to his early years as a surveyor. His early agricultural experiments added to his success as a farmer. He found time to design furniture that added beauty to his home at Mount Vernon. His study of evening skies with a primitive telescope increased his knowledge of his own world. He also made a collection of varieties of tea.
Today hobbies are more important than ever. We have more leisure than we have ever had in the past. The shorter workweek and the fact that we will live longer than our parents and grandparents give us this new leisure. Throughout our lives each of us will have thousands of free hours after studying and working. Interesting hobbies can be the best answer to the question of how to use these hours.
One of the hobbies we know the cavemen had was______.
A.hunting
B.fighting
C.drawing
D.riding

听力原文: Some kind of planning in composition writing is essential. For one thing it reveals whether you really have enough to say on the topic you have chosen while there is still time to change to another topic. It is also important because it stimulates your ideas and helps to fix them in your mind.
When you have chosen your topic, and perhaps have a general idea of your theme, make quick short notes of all the ideas that come into your head. Remember that these should be notes--words or phrases--not sentences, which would slow you down. As you do this you will find that new ideas will come to you, for one idea leads to another. You may have to rearrange your ideas, to decide which paragraphs they will fit into, and which ideas will be left out altogether. This should not take more than ten minutes, for in an examination you have no time to waste.
It is for you to decide how detailed you plan should be. If you are good at writing, and have had plenty of practice, probably only a few brief notes will be necessary, but if you are not, then you may require a more de tailed plan. But remember that even the best writers need to make some notes if they are going to produce a well-organized piece of writing.
A probable title to this passage might be ______.
A.The Importance of Planning in a Composition Exam
B.How to Choose a Topic for Composition
C.The Skill of Note-taking
D.How to Be a Good Writer

听力原文: In an attempt to resist the rising cost of fuel and fight the pollution choking our cities, many outgoing students have taken to riding bicycles to school. The unfortunate result of this otherwise positive trend is the traffic problems caused by bicycles having to share the road with cars. Unfortunately, traffic accidents involving bicycles are on the increase throughout the country, so this new solution has led to a dilemma.
To solve this dilemma, special bike paths have been created on most roads leading to and from college campuses. It is essential that cyclists stay on those paths. It is necessary for the safety of those of you who ride bicycles as well as the motorists that you share the road with.
Obviously, it may be inconvenient to ride in the bike paths at times, but we must insist on it. To enforce the necessity of staying on the paths, there are fines for bicyclists who ride down the middle of the street. The federal fines are currently running at $ 25 for a first time violation, but if the law is continually violated, the fines will increase by different amounts depending on your local ordinances.
The money that is collected from the fines will go towards a fund to help build better bike paths. You may have special bicycle bridges in your neighborhood right now. If not, you can count on seeing them in the future. We are committed to making bicycling a safe alternative to using cars and we appreciate your help in making that goal a reality.
What is the latest problem facing people who drive to school?
A.Pollution in the air.
B.A lack of parking.
C.Accidents with bicycles.
D.A lack of bridges.

听力原文: It was an Italian inventor who created the first wireless device for setting out radio signals in 1895. But not until the American inventor Lee De Forest built the first amplifying vacuum tube in 1906 did we get the first radio as we know it. And the first actual radio broadcast was made on Christmas Eve of 1906. That's when someone working from an experimental station in Brand Rock, Massachusetts, arranged the program with two short musical selections of poem and brief holiday greeting. The broadcast was heard by wireless operators on ships with a radio through several hundreds miles. The following year, De Forest began regular radio broadcasts in New York. These programs Were similar to much what we hear on radio today. In that, De Forest played only music. But because there were still no home radio receivers, De Forest's audiences consisted only of wireless operators on ships in New York Harbor. There is no doubt that radio broadcasting was quite a novelty in those days, but it took a while to catch on commercially. Why? Hmm, for the simple fact that only a few people, in fact, only those who tinkered with wireless telegraphs as a hobby owned receivers. It wasn't until the 1920s that someone envisioned mass appeal for radio. This was radio pioneer David Sarnoff who predicted that one day there would be a radio receiver in every home.
Why were early radio broadcasts heard by such a small audience?
A.Few people owned the necessary equipment.
B.The music selection was not very popular.
C.Few ships came into New York harbor.
D.The radio signal was too weak to reach a mass audience.
