Text 4 The most thoroughly studied in the history of the new world are the ministers and

political leaders of seventeenth-century New England. According to the standard history of American philosophy, nowhere else in colonial America was “So much important attached to intellectual pursuits ” According to many books and articles, New England’s leaders established the basic themes and preoccupations of an unfolding, dominant Puritan tradition in American intellectual life.

To take this approach to the New Englanders normally mean to start with the Puritans’ theological innovations and their distinctive ideas about the church-important subjects that we may not neglect. But in keeping with our examination of southern intellectual life, we may consider the original Puritans as carriers of European culture adjusting to New world circumstances. The New England colonies were the scenes of important episodes in the pursuit of widely understood ideals of civility and virtuosity.

The early settlers of Massachusetts Bay included men of impressive education and influence in England. `Besides the ninety or so learned ministers who came to Massachusetts church in the decade after 1629,There were political leaders like John Winthrop, an educated gentleman, lawyer, and official of the Crown before he journeyed to Boston. There men wrote and published extensively, reaching both New World and Old World audiences, and giving New England an atmosphere of intellectual earnestness.

We should not forget , however, that most New Englanders were less well educated. While few crafts men or farmers, let alone dependents and servants, left literary compositions to be analyzed, The in thinking often had a traditional superstitions quality. A tailor named John Dane, who emigrated in the late 1630s, left an account of his reasons for leaving England that is filled with signs. sexual confusion, economic frustrations , and religious hope-all name together in a decisive moment when he opened the Bible, told his father the first line he saw would settle his fate, and read the magical words: “come out from among them, touch no unclean thing , and I will be your God and you shall be my people.” One wonders what Dane thought of the careful sermons explaining the Bible that he heard in puritan churched.

Mean while , many settles had slighter religious commitments than Dane’s, as one clergyman learned in confronting folk along the coast who mocked that they had not come to the New world for religion . “Our main end was to catch fish. ”

2. The origin of English week Sunday means "sun's day" in ancient English (the day of the sun). For Christians, Sunday is the sabbath, because Jesus's resurrection is on Sunday. Around three hundred A. D., church and government authorities in Europe began ordering Sunday for a day off. Until today, most countries in the world have taken Sunday as their holiday. According to Western legend, Monday means "moon day" (because it belongs to the moon) because Westerners dedicate this day to the goddess of the moon. In ancient times, Westerners believed that the monthly profits and losses would affect the growth of crops, and also affect the medical treatment. In addition, there is the so-called Blue Monday. "Blue" means "melancholy". Monday is the beginning of a week's work, no fun, so bad mood, many countries will be on Monday as family washday (family cleaning day), it is a long-standing custom. In ancient Rome mythology, the moon was the wife of the sun. So there must be a day in the week for the moon. They named the second day of the week "Lunaedies", and the Anglo Saxons borrowed the word "Monandaeg", which means "Moon day" and "modern English" as "Monday". Tuesday: Tuesday is evolved from the ancient English word Tiw. Tiw is the God of war in Norse mythology, just like the God of war Mars in Rome mythology. In Nordic mythology, not Tiw, but Tyr. When the wolf fine Fenrir on earth evil, Tyr volunteered to grappling is bandaging hand wolf fine, was bitten off. That means the, day, of, Tiw, and that's the original form of modern English Tuesday. Wednesday means "Woden's day" in old English. Woden is the father of the northern gods. To sacrifice myself to a uniform wolf fine hand Tyr, is his son. Woden led the protoss to fight the giants. He sacrificed his sharp right eye and traded the giants for the "intelligent" oasis. He also went deep into the earth and stole wine from the giants. Westerners in order to remember the LORD God, according to his name coined the word Wednesday. Thursday means "Thor's day" in old English. Thor is a Norse god of thunder, often with a big hammer. Legend has it that once his big hammer was stolen by a giant named Thrym. Thrym threatened to make an exchange unless the protoss promised to marry the beautiful God of love Freya. However Freya didn't agree, so the thought of a way, by the Thor men and women s wear Freya clothes, Pretend to marry him, Thrym no doubt, cheat, give the hammer to the bride. So Thor grabbed back his weapon and killed Thrym at once. Friday means "Frigg's day" in old English. Frigg was the goddess of marriage and fertility in northern mythology and the wife of Woden. Legend has it that she usually wears shining white robes, living in the Crystal Palace and weaving colorful clouds with the maids. Friday is a lucky day for the Nordic people. For Christians, however, the opposite is true, because Jesus's crucifixion day falls on Friday. Saturday means "Saturn's day" in old English. Saturn is in the myth of Rome agriculture. In charge of grain, like the mythical emperor Shennong as Chinese. 4. Which the following statement is true?

A、Sunday is the sabbath, because Jesus's resurrection is not on Sunday.

B、Tuesday is evolved from the ancient English word Thor.

C、Friday is an unlucky day for the Nordic people.

Text 4

Over the last decade, demand for the most common cosmetic surgery procedures, like breast enlargements and nose jobs, has increased by more than 400 percent. According to Dr. Dai Davies, of the Plastic Surgery Partnership in Hammersmith, the majority of cosmetic surgery patients are not chasing physical perfection. Rather, they are driven to fantastic lengths to improve their appearance by a desire to look normal. “What we all crave is to look normal, and normal is what is prescribed by the advertising media and other external pressures. They give us a perception of what is physically acceptable and we feel we must look like that.”

In America, the debate is no longer about whether surgery is normal; rather, it centres on what age people should be before going under the knife. New York surgeon Dr. Gerard Imber recommends “maintenance” work for people in their thirties. “The idea of waiting until one needs a heroic transformation is silly,” he says. “By then, you’ve wasted 20 great years of your life and allowed things to get out of hand.” Dr. Imber draws the line at operating on people who are under 18, however. “It seems that someone we don’t consider old enough to order a drink shouldn’t be considering plastic surgery.”

In the UK cosmetic surgery has long been seen as the exclusive domain of the very rich and famous. But the proportionate cost of treatment has fallen substantially, bringing all but the most advanced laser technology within the reach of most people. Dr. Davies, who claims to “cater for the average person”, agrees. He says:“I treat a few of the rich and famous and an awful lot of secretaries. Of course, £3,000 for an operation is a lot of money. But it is also an investment for life which costs about half the price of a good family holiday.”

Dr. Davies suspects that the increasing sophistication of the fat injecting and removal techniques that allow patients to be treated with a local anaesthetic in an afternoon has also helped promote the popularity of cosmetic surgery. Yet, as one woman who recently paid £2,500 for liposuction to remove fat from her thighs admitted, the slope to becoming a cosmetic surgery Veteran is a deceptively gentle one. “I had my legs done because they’d been bugging me for years. But going into the clinic was so low key and effective it whetted my appetite. Now I don’t think there’s any operation that I would rule out having if I could afford it.”
