听力原文: We all scream for water when thirsty. But do you know that in very hot dry weather, plants also make faint sounds as if they am crying out for help? You see, in a plant' s stem, there are hundreds of water pipes that bring water and minerals from the soil all the way up to the leaves. As the ground turns dry, it becomes harder and harder for the plants to do this. In severe droughts, plants have to fight to pull out any water available. Scientist Robert Winter has found out that when it is really bad, their water pipes snap from the tension like rubber bands. When that happens, the whole plant vibrates a little. The snapping pipes make noises ten thousand times more quiet than a whisper.
Robert knows that healthy well-watered plants are quiet. He also knows that many insects prefer a attacking dry plants rather than healthy plants. How do the insects know which are healthy plants and which are not? Robert thinks that the insects may listen for the plants that cry, and then they may buzz in m kill. To test his theory, Robert is using a device that can imitate plant cries. He attaches it to a quiet healthy plant so that the plant sounds thirsty. Then he watches the insects to see ff they attack more often than usual. If he is fight, scientists could use the insects' ability against them. They could build traps that imitate crying plants, so that when the insects buzz in to eat, they won' t buzz out.

M: I used to. But I haven't played quite some time. I don't really have time these days with all my studies. Why do you ask?
W: I'm trying to organize a group to play at some parties on weekends. We still need a guitar player.
M: Well, I don't know. But your idea sounds fun to me.
W: Oh, it will be. I'm more or less in charge of things, so if you want to give it a try, you're in. It's as easy as that. Besides, it's a great chance to get out and meet people.
M: But I haven't practiced for a long time. I don't know if I remember any songs I used to play.
W: Don't worry about that. I just thought I'd ask you to try and join us sometime when we were practicing. We'll be practicing for a few months before we give performances.

M: What do you mean?

M: But that's impossible. I only started going to this school last month. And I'm a business major, not an artist.
W: Hmm. The thing's pretty strange. Let me look up the records. OK, you are Robert Smith?
M: Yeah.
W: You live at 1423 West Conner Street?
M: Ah? No, I'm living on campus now.
W: You did say you were Robert Smith, right?
M: Yeah. Well, my full name is Robert James Smith.
W: Let me check one more thing on the computer. I see now, there's another Robert Smith, Robert El. Smith. And it looks like he's the one who got that overdue book checked out.
M: Another Robert Smith, no kidding?
W: So I guess you two never met.
M: No, I'm thinking I should probably try. I could at least find out what has just happened.
W: Good idea. Now I let you check out these books today. But I suggest you should start to use your middle name to avoid any problems like this in the future.

听力原文: Three summers ago, a young boy named Robert from the Harlem area of New York City found a special second home. He traveled away from the city to live with the Lober family in New York State spending the summer playing with other children, swimming and sailing a boat. Today, Robert continues to visit the Lobers who consider him a part of their family.
This special visit was made possible by an organization called the Fresh Air Fund started in 1877 when New York City was overwhelmed with the disease tuberculosis. Many children lived in crowded apartments. This accelerated the spread of the disease. So getting these children "fresh air" in the country was seen as a solution to this problem.
Today, the Fresh Air Fund still helps children from low-income communities in New York experience life in the country with a host family. Those children enjoy a free holiday and take part in activities they would not normally experience in the city. More than 65% of the children who visit a host family are invited back the next year. In this way, the children and families often maintain their friendships. Since it began, the Fresh Air Fund has provided free summer holidays to more than one million seven hundred thousand children from low-income communities. More than ten thousand New York City children enjoy Fresh Air Fund programs every year.
What is the main idea of this passage?
A.The history of the Fresh Air Fund.
B.A comparison between today's and past life' of Robert.
C.The function of the Fresh Air Fund.
D.The influence the Fresh Air Fund has ma children.
听力原文: The Roberts were driving through Port Merlin when they' heard a loud explosion. At first they thought it was the noise of a plane but before long they saw smoke using a few blocks away and a little further on they came upon a crowd in the street and men with armbands directing the traffic. The way ahead was blocked and they were in a one-way street, so they tried taking a short cut down a side street and soon found themselves in a bad traffic jam. The car in front of them stopped and couldn't start again, so Mr. Robert helped the driver to push it ont of the way.
In the meantime two fire engines as well as ambulances and police arrived and the ambulance men began looking for victims among the debris. The police put up a barrier with a notice across the street leading to the building, which was badly damaged, and tried to stop sightseers from getting near. Two of the ambulance men heard noises while they were searching. It sounded like someone knocking, so they took it in turn to clear away some bricks to get at the person under the floor beneath them. In the end they succeeded in rescuing him.
Some of those who had narrow escapes were interviewed by press reporter. Apparently the explosion had been caused by a leaking gas pipe and it looked as if the firm which had recently fitted the pipes was responsible for the accident.

M: Oh, that's a good idea. Is the program the same as last year?
W: More or less. There are a couple of new classes.
M: Which classes are you thinking of joining?
W: Well, there's pottery on a Monday evening from 7:30 to 9:30 and! thought I might go to the folk guitar class on Tuesday and Spanish conversation on Thursday.
