That's what they believe. However, kilts are not really so old. Before 1730, Scottish men wore a long shirt and blanket around their shoulders. Theses clothes got in the way when they started to work in factories. So, in 1730 a factory owner changed the blanket into a skirt: the kilt. That's how the first kilt was made.
Then, in the late 1700s Scottish soldiers in the British Army began to wear kilts. One reason for this was national sentiment: The Scottish soldiers wanted to look different from the English soldiers. The British Army probably had a different reason. A Scottish soldier in a kilt was always easy to find! The Scottish soldiers fought very hard and became famous. The kilt was part of that fame, and in the early 1800s men all through Scotland began to wear kilts.
These kilts had colorful stripes going up and down and across. In the 1700s and early 1800s, the color of the stripes had no special meaning. Men sometimes owned kilts in several different colors. But later the colors became important to the Scottish families. By about 1850, most families had special colors for their kilts. For example, men from the Campbell family had kilts with green, yellow and blue stripes. Scottish people often believe that the colors of the kilts are part of their family history. In fact, each family just chose the colors they liked best.
This is not the story you will hear today if you are in Scotland. Most Scottish people still believe that kilts are as old as Scotland and that the colors are as old as the Scottish families. Sometimes feelings are stronger than facts!
This passage is about _______.
A.Scottish men
B.the history of Scotland
C.kilts
D.Scottish families
Betty and Harold have been married for years. But one thing still puzzles (困扰) old Harold. How is it that he can leave Betty and her friend Joan sitting on the sofa, talking, go out to a ball- game, come back three and a half hours later, and they're still sitting on the sofa? Talking?
What in the world, Harold wonders, do they have to talk about?
Betty shrugs. Talk? We' re friends.
Researching this matter called friendship, psychologist Lillian Rubin spent two years interviewing more than two hundred women and men. No matter what their age, their job, their sex, the re- suits were completely clear: women have more friendships than men, and the difference in the con- tent and the quality of those friend-ships is "marked and unmistakable".
More than two-thirds of the single men Rubin interviewed could not name a best friend. Those who could were likely to name a woman. Yet three-quarters of the single women had no problem naming a best friend, and almost it was a woman. More married men than women named their wife/ husband as a best friend, most trusted person, or the one they would turn to in time of emotional distress (感情危机). "Most women," says Rubin, "identified (认定) at least one, usually more, trusted friends to whom they could turn in a troubled moment, and they spoke openly about the importance of these relationships in their lives."
"In general," writes Rubin in her new book, "women' s friendships with each other rest on shared emotions and support, but men' s relationships are marked by shared activities." For he most part, Rubin says, interactions(交往)between men are emotionally controlled--a good fit with the social requirements of "manly behavior".
"Even when a man is said to be a best friend," Rubin writes, "the two share little about their innermost feelings. Whereas a woman' s closest female friend, might be the first to tell her to leave a failing marriage, it wasn't unusual to hear a man say he didn't know his friend' s marriage was in serious trouble until he appeared one night asking if he could sleep on the sofa."
What old Harold cannot understand or explain is the fact that ________.
A.he is treated as an outsider rather than a husband
B.women have so much to share
C.women show little interest ballgames
D.he finds his wife difficult to talk to
English speakers are always creating new words, and we are often able to know where most words come from. Sometimes, however, no one may really know where a word comes from. Did you ever think about why hamburgers are called hamburgers, especially when they are not made with ham? About a hundred years ago, some men went to America from Europe. They came from a big city in Germany called Hamburg. They did not speak good English, but they ate good food. When some Americans saw them eating round pieces of beef, they asked the Germans what it was. The Germans did not understand the question and answered, "We come from Hamburg." One of these Americans owned a restaurant, and had an idea. He cooked some round pieces of beef like those which the men from Hamburg ate. Then he put them between two pieces of bread and started selling them. Such bread came to be called "hamburgers". Today, "hamburgers" are sold in many countries around the world.
Whether this story is true or not, it certainly is very interesting. Knowing why any word has a certain meaning is interesting, too. The explanation, for most English words, can be found in any large English dictionary.
According to the author, English is______.
A.as old as Chinese
B.older than German
C.not so old as Chinese
D.very difficult to learn
听力原文: Most single-parent families result when a marriage ends in divorce. (29)In most cases the divorced parents decide who will have the children. (30)About 85 percent of the children live with their mother after divorce. However. more divorced men want their children to live with them. Sometimes a divorce causes a dispute about who will care for the children. In these cases a judge decides. In an increasing number of disputes, a judge orders that both parents share the children. Usually the children will live with one parent, and both the mother and father will take part in decisions affecting them. In other cases the children will live with the mother part of the time, and with the father part of the time. Frank and his divorced wife, for example, share responsibility for caring for their 6-year old daughter. The little girl lives with Frank for 10 days, then she lives with her mother for 10 days.
In other eases men care for their children alone. Tony, for example, was 18 when his girlfriend had a baby. His girlfriend disappeared and left the baby behind. Tony decided he wanted to care for his son by himself. Yet he was not sure he knew bow to do it. So he joined a group in Boston called Fathers Incorporated. The group offers advice and skills to help. (31)Tony take care of his son. Tony believes he can be a good parent. He says women have been doing the job for a long time. "So," he says, "why not men?"

A car, truck or bus can't stop very quickly. If a car is going very fast, it will travel many meters before it stops. People don't understand this. They think a car can stop within a few meters. The faster a car is traveling, the longer it needs to stop. It is very hard for a person to know how fast a car is traveling.
The only safe way to cross the road is to look both ways, right and left. When the road is clear, it's safe to cross. The correct way to cross the road is to walk quickly. It's not safe to run. If people run across the roads, they may fall to the ground.

A Cross-cultural Phenomenon
There appears to be a great variation as to the treatment that older adults receive, ranging from extreme reverence and respect to abandonment and deprivation with a broad range of studies dealing with perceptions of old age. Most investigators report findings which support the view that attitudes toward the elderly were most favorable in primitive societies and decrease with increasing modernization to the point of generally negative view in industrialized Western nations. In other words, the more "civilized" the society is, the more likely they are to be ageist and maintain negative attitudes about the aged. Some examples may be helpful.
Men in the Middle East view old age as life's summit. Older men are viewed as having attained high status and prestige. In fact, the word "sheik" originally meant "old man". No mention is, however, made of women's status in old age in the Middle East. Women's status and power does increase in many cultures following menopause. It is stated that the old widow has great power in the Japanese family. Women in many small-scale traditional societies also enjoy an increase in status. Post-menopausal women in these societies usually experience greater sexual freedom, the right to participate in ritual, the right to participate in the political realm of the society, and a decrease in the amount of work required in the home. With regard to work, the older woman is expected to be leisured.
The cross-cultural differences in attitudes towards the aged may in part be due to different societal perspectives. Three of the factors hypothesized to contribute to the development of ageism are of relevance here. First, death is not viewed in Western society as a natural part of the life cycle. Those societies, which view life and death as a continuous process, exhibit fewer ageist attitudes. For example, fewer ageist attitudes are exhibited in Japan and the Middle East. Second, older individuals are viewed as productive in many small-scale traditional societies. In fact, they are often the power brokers within those societies. This can be compared with Western society where older adults are thought of as unproductive and therefore, negatively. Last, not all societies are youth oriented. Therefore, a higher value is placed on the later stages of adulthood.
What does the author mean by cross-cultural phenomenon concerning people's attitudes toward ageism?
A.There is a wide variation.
B.There is a great decease.
C.There is an important finding.
D.There is an interesting contrast.
