What is a librarian? A person who sits at a little desk, talking in a very low voice, taki
ng books from people who bring them back, making them pay if they have kept them too long, and stamping the date on books that are taken out? Certainly not! That is the work of the most junior employee in the library. To become a qualified librarian, you first have to work in a library for a year to get firsthand experience of the work. Then you go to a special library school, usually for two years. If you pass the exams successfully, you may apply for a senior post in a public library, or even at a university.

Every English town(and many large villages too) has a public library. The chief librarian has the important task of deciding in which way to spend the money that is allocated(划拨) for the library by the council. Since the librarian buys the circulation materials, he or she must know the community in which he/she serves. A public library in a remote agricultural area, for example, might not have very much demand for a book on the problem of air pollution in large cities. However, people in a given area may be studying any subject under the sun, and these students are often quite dependent on the services of their public library, so a librarian must strive to keep a variety of books in the library no matter what locale he/she is serving. Also, librarians are usually asked to advise on the design of new library buildings, so modern libraries tend to be far more sensibly planned than those built prior to the 1900s. As libraries are often open longer hours than businesses, the librarian's working timetable may be very different from that of his friends, and he may have a free time during the day to compensate for the evenings when he has to work. But, having such an important position in the cultural life of his community, he can never grumble that his job is boring or unimportant.

What does the most junior employee in a library do?

A.Thinks and dreams about qualifying as a librarian.

B.Sits at a little desk.

C.Talks in a very low voice.

D.Takes in and lets out books.

Oxford is a very old town on the River Thames, about 60 miles from London. Unlike modern u
niversity towns, where you usually find the university on the edge of the town, or on its own campus (校园), Oxford's center is the university; and all around the crossroads at the very heart of Oxford, Carfax, there are grey stone colleges and other university buildings. In the center you can also find interesting old restaurants. There are a lot of churches, and a few really large and interesting buildings, such as the Ashmolean Museum, the "round" library, the Bodleian and Radcliffe Camera. Like all English towns, there are parks, and one" The Parks" is the home of university cricket(板球) in the summer months. As you leave the center and go towards the edge of Oxford you can see industrial areas in one direction; and in another, beautiful suburbs(郊区). There is, in fact, quite a lot of industry in Oxford.

The passage introduces to us ______.

A.an old industrial center

B.a well-known university

C.a famous university town

D.a newly developed town

听力原文:W: Can I help you?

M: Yes. I am a bit confused. My sociology class is supposed to read a chapter in a book called Sociology and the Modern Age. According to the syllabus, the book is in the library, but I haven't been able to find it.

W: Do you have your syllabus with you? May I see it?

M: Yes, uh....I put it in the front of my sociology notebook. Oh, here it is.

W: Let me see. Oh yes. Your professor has placed this book on reserve. That means you cannot find it on the shelves in its usual place. You need to go to a special room called the reserve room. It's down the hall and to the right.

M: I'm sorry. I still don't understand what you mean by on reserve.

W: You see, your professor wants everyone in the class to read the chapter. If one student removes the book from the library, it is likely that none of the other students will have the opportunity to read it. So, your professor has insured that ail students have the opportunity to reed it by placing it on reserve.

M: So, will I be able to find this book?

W: Yes, when a book is on reserve, a student can go to the reserve room and ask the reserve librarian for the book. The student can have the book for a few hours, and he or she must read it in the library during that time. That way, the book stays in the library, and all students have a chance to reed it.

M: Okay. Thank you. I understand now.

W: Will there be anything else?

M: No! I am on my way to the reserve room. Thanks again!

第10题
It is natural for young people to be critical of their parents at times and to blame the
m for most of the misunderstandings between them. They have always complained that their parents are out of touch with modern ways; that they are possessive and dominant; that they do not trust their children to deal with crises; that they talk too much about certain problems and that they have no sense of humor, at least in parent-child relationships. I believe it is true that parents often underestimate their teenage children and also forget how they themselves felt when young.

Young people often irritate (激怒) their parents with their choices in clothes and hairstyles, in music and entertainers. This is not their motive. They feel isolated from the adult world into which they have not yet been accepted. So they create a culture and society of their own. Then, if it turns out that their music or entertainers or vocabulary or clothes or hairstyles annoy their parents, this gives them additional enjoyment. They feel they are superior, at least in a small way, and that they are leaders in style. and taste.

Sometimes you are resistant, and proud because you do not want your parents to approve of what you do. If they approve, it looks as if you are betraying your own age group. But in that case, you are assuming that you are the loser; you cannot win but at least you keep your honor. This is a passive way of looking at things. It is natural enough after long years of childhood, when you were completely under your parents’ control. But it ignores the fact that you are now beginning to be responsible for yourself.

If you intend to control your life, cooperation can be part of that plan. You can charm others, especially your parents, into doing things the way you want. You can impress others with your sense of responsibility and initiative, so that they will offer you the authority to do what you want to do.
