When Christopher Columbus" discovered" the New World in 1492, he thought he had reached th

e continent of Asia and had landed in India. He called the people he found in this new land "Indians" -the ancestors of the American.

Indians had come from Asia thousands of years before Columbus saw them.

Thousands of years ago, the Earth was in an ice age. (76) People who lived in northeastern Asia found their homeland growing colder. Huge sheets of ice were spreading over the land and animals people hunted for food were being forced away. The people also had to move, to stay near the animals. Some groups of people crossed Bering Strait from Asia to North Pacific Ocean, which separates northeastern Asia from Alaska. (77) These people slowly traveled east and south, searching for areas where hunting was good. Their children and all those who came after them continued to spread throughout the New World.

The Indians do not have yellowish skin that many Asian people have. Their skin is reddish brown. But like the people of Japan and other countries of Asia, Indians usually have high cheekbones and straight black hair.

In 1492, Christopher Columbus ______.

A.found American Indians in Asia

B.thought he had reached India

C.landed in India

D.reached the continent of Asia

听力原文: When Dorcas Hankin went into the hospital her 19-year-old son Christopher stole her car and sold it for seven days of extravagant life. When the pohce told Dorcas her car had been stolen, she went into shock.

"I just knew Christopher had done it. He'd been threatening to do it for ages. He said the money would be his compensation for an unhappy childhood."

"I knew I had to tell the police, but I couldn't face the thought of shopping my own son. It took me two days to pluck up the courage. But it was the only way to make him stop and think about what he was doing with his life. I also had to take him to court because that was the only way I could claim insurance."

Christopher was given 120 hours of community service and he's now living back at home with his mother. But why would she forgive him so readily?

"Because I do feel guilty about Chirstopher's childhood. Christopher's dad and I split up when he was three and later I remarried. My new husband didn't like having children around, therefore, we sent the boy to a boarding school. But Christopher came home soon. By then I was divorced and he really began to manipulate me. He'd get jobs and quit after two days, saying he couldn't stand authority, then he'd expect me to give him the money to go out.

"I don't earn a lot, but I just couldn't seem to say no to him because I felt the way he'd turned out was partly my fault."

Christopher says:

"I love my mother but I feel angry with her for staying with that man all those years. She should never have married someone who disliked children so much."

"I suppose I've been able to manipulate her in recent years because of her guilt, but what teenager doesn't ?'

"She lets me live with her as she can't bear to see me on the streets but somewhere to sleep is all that she'll give me."

听力原文: Do children really do better at private schools? How can I teach my kids to be f
inancially responsible? When many people discuss schools "good or bad" what they're talking about is their own belief systems, not real information gathered through research and experience. To wit, many of us believe, hands-down, that private schools are better than public schools. However, a recent study by the husband-and-wife team of Sarah Thuele Lubienski and Christopher Lubienski, researchers at the University of Illinois-Champaign, found that when they controlled for a family's socioeconomic background, public-school kids slightly outperformed private-school kids. Using data from the 2000 National Assessment of Educational Progress, the researchers looked specifically at the scores on a federal math exam for 28,000 fourth-and eighth-graders. The reason for this, explains Christopher Lubienski, is because math is the one area that's least likely to be influenced by other activities that supplement education. Math scores show in a more pure way the quality of instruction, says Lubienski. Of course, the researchers warn that this study says nothing about a specific school. But it is reassuring to know that overall public-school education should not necessarily be seen as second-rate compared to private schools.

When many people discuss schools "good or bad", what are they talking about?

A.Financial costs.

B.Locations of schools.

C.Their personal belief systems.

D.Information gathered through research.

It is said that English language came into being around fifth century, which is termed to be "Old English." Old English period did not die away untill 11th century when William the Conqueror arrived in England and was crowned to be the King of England. Since then, Middle English has taken its shape and developed. Middle English gradually disappeared when the printing house started to publish books. People began to regulate the spelling and grammar rules for a wider readership. Since 1475 when the frist printing house was established, English has come into a period scholars called "Early Modern English." It is a historical period when great number of writers bloomed such as Christopher Marlow, Francis Bacon, Wyat, Shakespeare, Spencer. Also, in their works we still can find the traces of Middle English. In A Midsummer Night's Dream, when Quince says in his prologue that "This beauteous lady Thisby is certain" and that "This grisly beast which lion hight by name/ The trusty Thisbe coming first by night," the words "certain" and "hight" are used in meaning of Middle English which have the meaning "to be called" in Contemporary English. The Early Modern English fades away in the late 18th century when Modern English paved its way into social development. Contemporary English that we are using today did not come until after WW II.
