案例分析 Directions: In this section you are supposed to analyze the following cases from the perspective of intercultural communication. Then write down the answers on the Answer Sheet. In 1998, U.S. President Bill Clinton visited China. During his visit, he gave a speech to university students in Beijing. His remarks were generally well received and were followed by a lively question and answer session. After the speech, one student remarked, “During the question and answer session, I did not understand why the president pointed his finger at us to select a person. We would not use such a rude gesture.” Puzzled, the American reporter asked the student what gesture the president should have used. The student answered using a sweep of the open hand---palm upward. What can we learn from this case? What does Clinton’s gesture mean in Chinese culture? How about in American culture?

听力原文:W: Bird watching! Now what is it people love about this so much?

M: I think it's the challenge, it keeps your brain going, you feel like a little kid on a treasure hunt. You're poking around the trees, and looking for little hidden birds.

W: The three central characters in your book, the top finishers in the 1998 Big Year competition, were clearly looking for a challenge. Tell us how the Big Year works.

M: Well, the Big Year is a contest with no referees and few rules. The idea is, who can see the most species of birds in North America in one year. So you can see them however you want. You can fly to see them, ride a bike to see them. In one case, they even took a helicopter to see them in the Ruby Mountains of Nevada.

W: And they chase the birds through the canyon, as I recall.

M: They did, up and over peaks, and one guy had a horrible seasickness problem.

W: It is said he just hoped he could hold his breakfast together.

M: And he did, and he got the bird. What a great bonus.

What do the man and the woman talk about?

A.A book on birds.

B.Species of birds.

C.A man chasing birds.

D.Activities of watching birds.

听力原文:M: How did you get started in jazz singing?

W: It was a zigzag route. I went from country music to singing madrigals, to singing folk, to opera, and then to jazz. People kept offering me different projects, saying ' Well, I know that you have never done this before, so maybe you might not want to?' and I would say, ' Oh, sure. I' 11 try it. ' So I went from form. to form, to form. and that is how.

M: Are you going to keep moving around or are you stuck on jazz singing now?

W: I think jazz is where I' m going to stay. I feel the most comfortable here, I have the most freedom here.

M: When were the sessions for this album originally done?

W: The session was done in Sept. of 1998 we mixed it down the second week of October, and nothing was done with it. I was busy for five and half years in a life of death battle with a portion of the government' a legal battle' that I had. So I had to drop everything to deal with it.

M: Does anyone in your family have a musical background?

W: I was brought up in a family that had an awful lot of musicians, and none of them took anything I was doing very seriously at all. I was actually the family joke. I just did this music to get it out of my system. I did not expect anyone to pay much attention to it. I just knew that I had to say it.

M: Thanks for talking with us, best wishes for your career.

W: Thank you!

What Is a Tour Operator? Tour operators are businesses that combine two or more travel services (e.g. transport, accommodation, catering, entertainment, sightseeing) and sell them through travel agencies or directly to final consumers as a single product (called a package tour). The components of a package tour might be preestablished, or can result from an“a la carte” procedure, where the visitor decides the combination of services she/he wishes to acquire. A tour operator is often described as an intermediary. As Cooper et al. (1998) have said: “ The principal role of intermediaries is to bring buyers andsellers together, either to create markets where they previously did not exist, or to make existing markets work more efficiently and thereby to expand marketsize... In all industries the task of intermediaries is to transform goods and services which consumers do not want, to a product that they do want.” Tour operators are the crucial link in the distribution chain, representing thecentral connection between customers and providers of services and therefore having the power to influence both sides, the demand and the supply, according to their interests. The product that a tour operator offers to the customer is the “inclusivetour”, i.e. the packaged combination of transport, accommodation and services. Due to bulk buying, the tour operator is able to offer this package at a cheaper price than the customer would have been able to achieve dealing directly with suppliers. This package is distributed to the customer either directly (e.g.direct sell, internet) or via a “middleman' tne travel agent, who arranges the sale the package for commission, usually 10% of the retail price. Tour operatorsan travel agents thus have very ditterent roles. The product that a tour operator offers to the customer is the “inclusive tour”, including () .

The killer bees are coming! By the time you read this they will have reached Texas. By the
mid-1990s, they will have reached all the warmer areas of the United States. Scientists as well as farmers wait for them with a mixture of fear and wonder.

The killer bees should not be coming at all. Nature did not put them on this direct path for the United States; human beings did. The killer bees are from Africa. But in 1957 a scientist from Brazil got some of these killer bees for his experiments. The aim was to produce a better bee. However, an accident happened: a guest beekeeper let twenty-six of the queen bees escape by mistake. Before long, groups of killer bees took off for the woods.

Since that time, the wild killer bees have multiplied(繁衍) many times over. By 1998, their population was over 1015. They have spread all over South America, Central America, and most of Mexico. The United States is the next stop.

Are the killer bees really killers? Yes, they are. In their first thirty years in America, they have killed thousands of hens, pigs, and other animals. While no one knows the exact number, it is believed that several hundred people have also been killed.

So be careful. Killer bees are on the way. Scientists have no idea what to do with them yet. There must be a way.

We know from the passage that killer bees will spread to the United States ______.

A.from north

B.from south

C.from west

D.from east
