SECTION B PASSAGES

Directions: In this section, you will hear several passages. Listen to the passages carefully and then answer the questions that follow.

听力原文: The limits of a person's intelligence are fixed at birth, but whether or not he reaches those limits will depend on his environment. It is easy to show that intelligence is, to some extent, something we are born with. The closer the blood relationship between two people, the closer they are likely to be in intelligence. Thus if we take two unrelated people at random from the population, it is likely that their degree of intelligence will be completely different. If on the other hand, we take two identical twins, they will very likely be as intelligent as each other. Relations like brothers and sisters, parents and children, usually have similar intelligence, and this clearly suggests that intelligence depend on birth.

Imagine now that we take two identical twins and put them in different environments. We might send one, for example, to a university and the other to a factory where the work is boring and fixed. We would soon find differences in intelligence developing, and this indicates that environments as well as birth plays a part. This conclusion is also suggested by the fact that people who live in close contact with each other, but who are not related at all, are likely to have similar degrees of intelligence.

In the development of one's intelligence, environment plays ______.

A.a less important role

B.an equally important role

C.an insignificant role

D.the least significant role

Say goodbye to the Mountain Gorilla. Say farewell to the Short Tailed Chinchilla.

That's the conclusion of the United Nations Environment Program's(UNEP) Third Global Environmental Outlook Report. The report was compiled(编写) for the UN from the work of 1,100 scientists. It predicts the state of the planet in the year 2032 based on the policies and practices of the last 30 years. If these continue, UNEP says, we're going to be living on a very lonely planet. By 2032, one quarter of the world's mammal species(哺乳动物种群) will disappear. They will be joined by 12% of the world's bird species. And according to UNEP, 5,611 species of plants will also be wiped out-but since only 4% of the world's plant species have been examined in detail, that figure will probably be much higher.

UNEP blames a variety of causes, from poverty and overpopulation to pollution, global warming and profit-driven economic and trade policies. But there is some good news. There has been an 85% reduction in the use of chemicals, for instance. And around 10% of the earth's surface is in protected areas like national parks, five times as much as 30 years ago.

"We can never know for certain what lies before us," said a UNEP official. "The future is another country. But we can see how our actions or lack of actions might shape the environment and the inhabitants(居民) of this extraordinary blue planet by 2032."

At the beginning of the passage, "Mountain Gorilla" and "Short Tailed Chinchilla" seem to be some ______.

A.mountains

B.rivers

C.animals

D.sceneries

The producers of instant (立即的)coffee found their product strongly resisted (抵制) in the market places although their product has many advantages. Furthermore, the cost of the advertising of instant coffee was far higher than that of regular coffee. Efforts were made to find the cause of the consumers' seemingly unreasonable resistance to the product. The reason given by most people was dislike for the taste. The producer thought that there might be deeper reasons. This was proved by one of motivation(动机) research's classic studies, one often used in the trade.

Mason Haire, of the University of California, constructed two shopping lists that were the same except for one item. There were six items common to both lists: hamburger, carrots, bread, baking powder, canned peaches(桃子) , and potatoes ,with the brands or amounts specified D. The seventh item, in fifth place on both lists, read "one pound Maxwell House coffee" on the list and" Nescafe' instant coffee" on the other. One list was given to each other in a group of fifty women, and the other list to those in the other group of the same size: The women were asked to study their list and then to describe, as far as they could, the kind of woman ("personality and character" ) who would draw up that shopping list. Nearly half of those who had received the list including instant coffee described a housewife who was lazy and a poor planner. On the other hand, only one woman in the other group described the housewife, who had included regular coffee on her list, as lazy; only six of that group suggested that she was probably not a good wife. No one in the other group drew such a conclusion a- bout the housewife who intended to buy regular coffee.

In the opinion of instant coffee producers, ______.

A.people should buy regular coffee

B.regular coffee is superior to instant coffee

C.instant coffee should have a good market because of its obvious advantages

D.the advertising cost for regular coffee is very great

根据以下内容回答题:

No one knows for sure why birds migrate. One theory of migration says that ancient birds of the northern part of the earth were forced southward during the Ice Age,when ice covered large parts of Europe,Asia and North America. As the ice melted, the birds came back to their homelands, spent the summer, and then went south again in winter.Gradually, these comings and goings became habits, and birds now migrate though much of the ice has gone.

Another theory proposes that the ancient home of all modern birds was the tropic areas. There lived so well that the region became overcrowded. Many species had to move northward.During the summer, these birds found plenty of room and food.In winter, however, food be-came scarce and they had to return to the south.

A newer theory is that increasing daylight stimulates certain glands(腺)in the bird’s body and prepares it for migration. One scientist is able to make birds migrate in midwinter by expo-sing them for two months to artificial daylight.Recoveries of marked birds indicate that they fly north as soon as they are set free. The conclusion is that the urge to migrate is determined by changes in the bird’s body which take place under seasonal changes in the length of daylight.

This theory would account for the fact that not all birds migrate at the same time. Each sDecies seems to have its own schedule. The theory would also account for the regular time and rou‘tes of migration.Birds arrive at a given place year after year.Unfavorable weather delays them only a few days.Total hours of daylight, rather than weather, start them on the way.

How birds find their way to the same place year after year and why they follow their own Darticular route are still mysteries. They evidently do not follow known landmarks, for many young birds migrate alone without the help of experienced adults.

We can conclude from the first paragraph that__________ . 查看材料

A.during the Ice Age,the whole Europe was covered with ice

B.the south used to be the homelands of all birds

C.scientists can confidently explain why birds migrate now

D.migration of birds can be explained by the change of ice on earth
