Three American psychologists did a research study several years ago on what Americans val
ue most. In the study, eighteen values were asked to put in the order of importance. The result is as follows:

1.family security

2.a world at peace

3. Freedom

4.self-respect

5. Happiness

6.wisdom

7. a sense of accomplishment

8.a comfortable life

9. true friendship

10.salvation(拯救)in the religious

11.inner harmony

12.equality

13. national security

14.mature love

15. a world of beauty

16.pleasure

17. an exciting life

18.social recognition

Are you surprised that Americans place their values in this way? Did you think they would put their values in a different order? I would have thought love and friendship might have come higher on this list. As you can see, several of these values are closely related to each other and are dependent upon each other. In other words, we cannot have 1-family security without 2 a world at peace ,and 3 national security.

The results of the study showed that people who placed equality high up on their list of values were those who had positive attitudes towards persons of other races and who supported civil rights activity, especially the work of Martin Luther King Jr.

Another interesting finding in this study was that eleven -year-old children ranked a world of beauty 7th in importance, but fifteen-year old children ranked a world of beauty 14th and adults ranked it 17th. Well, what does it mean?Probably it means that as people grow older and take on more responsibilities in their work and with their own families, that appreciating beauty move-back into the background of their lives. What a pity! Children have more time to enjoy beauty and Nature.

Philosophers, psychologists and religious people have always been very much concerned with values. After all, values represent what we each hold most dear to ourselves and to our society. Societies establish their own forms of government based on the collective values of the people, or at least they try to do so.

The best title of this passage can be _________.

A.The American People

B.Research on American Values

C.How Psychologists Do Research

D.The American Social Custom

Which of the following might the writer place higher on the list?A.A world of beauty.

B.A comfortable life,

C.Equality and freedom.

D.Love and friendship.

Which of the following is NOT true?A.All Americans look forward to the equality of different races

B.Psychologists got some interesting results from this study.

C.Family security and a world at peace are dependent upon each other.

D.People ’s concepts of values play an essential role in the formation of their government system.

The finding that children ranked“a world of beauty ”higher than adults probably means that _________ .A.American schools begin to lay more emphasis as beauty education

B.American children are usually more kind- hearted than adults

C.adults have less time to enjoybeauty and Nature because of more responsibilities

D.a world of beauty would be the most important thing as people grow older

According to the last paragraph, values represent _________.A.what a dear friend our society is to us

B.what our dear society can give us

C.most valuable things to us and our society

D.how we and our society hold to each other

Some politicians are scurrying about with much zest and anticipation. It's time, their pol
ls inform. them, to find the quick fix for what they have determined is a society plagued by the irregular heartbeat of deficient values.

But there are contradictions that intrude on this denunciatory atmosphere. If there are moral omissions in the society, they cannot be sealed by instant, slenderly based attacks on entertainment. The plain fact is we are rearranging our priorities in the wrong way.

We are today misplacing our energies and our funding by directing all sorts of incentives to high schools and colleges. Too late. The moral scaffolding has been built by then, for better or worse. How then to begin this revision of life conduct? We must introduce in pre-school, and keep alive through grade five, a new school course.

The course could be titled, "What is right, and what is plainly wrong." For 30 minutes each day, the teacher would illuminate for these very young children what William Faulkner labeled "the old verities," the words that construct and implement the daily moral grind in which every durable society must engage if it is to be judged a "just" society.

These are words like duty, honor, service, integrity, pity, pride, compassion and sacrifice, plus the clear admonition that violence is wrong. To the teaching of the meaning of those words must be added that cleansing rule of treating other people as you would want them to treat you. And most of all to make sure that these kids understand with growing clarity that home, school and church are the sanctuaries for their later life.

There is a grand simplicity to this kind of school course. It enters a child's mind early, burrowing deep into those recesses of the human brain that even today advanced medical science has not been able to penetrate.

If you ask 'enough people, you will find that most of us remember our first- or second-grade teacher. I remember Miss Corbett and Miss Walker, who read to us before we really understood, but the words had weight and allure. We listened and, without really knowing it, we learned and saved what we learned. Perhaps it was because what we heard in those early school years was the first entry into our learning vessel.

Absent this kind of early instruction, absent the building of this moral shield, no congressional law, no presidential executive order, no fiery rhetoric will salvage a child's conduct nor locate a missing moral core.

According to the author, some politicians attribute the society's deteriorated moral values to ______.

A.deficient values

B.denunciatory atmosphere

C.improper entertainment

D.wrong priorities

听力原文: Okay, uh, so this time we are talking about the American Dream. This nation o
f ours is unique. You may not realize it and most of us surely take it for granted. We may complain about the economy but just try explaining the Price Club to a Russian or a Cuban or a Nigerian! We may complain about our government or our President, but in how many other countries is the press free to report the leaders indiscretions? We have so much and yet we complain so much...actually I think it is the ability to complain that makes America great. It is the freedom to dissent, to rally against the incumbent powers. This freedom to disagree is what makes us so special and it is this very freedom that is the very essence of America. What is the "American Dream"? Surely, it is different for everyone. For some, it is wealth and power. For others, it is religious freedom and justice. For others, it may be a roof over their heads. How has this nation been able to provide these things...we shall see. First, the American Dream is values and ideals. They are things we stand for, things we feel are right and correct. In America our values and ideals are. justice, liberty, fairness, democracy, and equality. Maybe you will ask why is understanding what the American Dream is important? You know, we vote and influence government via democracy, and we should know what this nation is supposed to be about before we make these serious decisions. And policies should be consistent with stated ideals. We have a responsibility to the nation and the world because our unique status as an economic and military superpower. How has the dream, our ideological roots, been created? Mores, the values of a society, and culture developed over time. Our values have been shaped by our forefathers, and, of course, our foremothers! Our history and the legacy of those that came before have created our culture. Religion teaches values and influences us. Enlightenment thinkers from the 1600s, like John Locke, Montesquieu, Rousseau and Voltaire have had a great impact on our government and our political philosophy. The ideas expressed by the enlightenment thinkers were put to use in America through the Declaration of Independence, in which such ideas as, natural rights, consent of the governed, life, liberty and property, later changed to "pursuit of happiness" by Jefferson, and right to rebel are also mentioned. Student A I have read it before. Professor Could you tell the class what other documents reflect the idea of American Dreams? Student A Yeah...Voltaire, 1st Amendment, the Freedom of Speech..."I may disagree with what you say but I will defend till death your right to say it!" Professor Anything else? What about Montesquieu, Constitution? I think this is the last thing you may neglect. Student A Oh, right. Separation of powers, checks and balances and dividing the government into three branches. Professor Good, and there are revolutionary ideas like those of John Adams, Thomas Jefferson and Thomas Paine, which created a nation out of rebellion. Dissent is the very basis of this nation, it is our heritage. And, er, ...immigrants have stocked this great nation. We are a nation of immigrants. We come from every continent and every nation. Immigrants come here for economic opportunity, religious freedom and to seek justice. These are our values because we are all the children of immigrants. They came to this island for their dreams. The Pilgrims wrote out their laws and created their government before they ever set foot in America so that the society would have a basis in law. This written "compact" was the foundation of their society. It illustrates the idea of consent of the governed because it was created by the governed. They all consented (agreed) to give up absolute and abject freedom in exchange for rule of law. John Locke wrote in the 1600s about the nature of government. He wrote: "In a state of nature, all men are free and equal." "In a state of nature, no man ought to harm another." "Man acquires property through the products of his labor." "In order to remedy inconveniences (problems) resulting from a state of nature ...men enter into contract, thereby creating a civil society.., to defend the natural rights of men. " "If a government violates the social contract.., it rebels against the people, and the people have the right to dissolve the government."This meant that government was created by the people and that people gave up absolute freedom in exchange for safety against problems. We call this concept "consent of the governed". Consent is given by what is referred to as a "social contract". This also says that if the government violates the social contract, the citizens have the right to remove the government, because it was the citizens that created the government. We call this notion the "right to rebel". These three concepts are the basic philosophical foundations of this nation.Narrator Listen to part of a talk in a history class. Now get ready to answer the questions. You may use your notes to help you answer

What is the talk mainly about?

A.The ideas contributing to the American Dream.

B.The history of American immigration.

C.The famous persons who had contributed to the country.

D.The influences the American Dream has had on American history.

Political institutions develop when the complexity of the society reaches the point at whi
ch kinship organization can no longer serve as an adequate mechanism for carrying out the political functions of the society. The following may be identified as political functions: (1) to protect the society from external threats; (2) to insure order in the society; (3) to resolve conflicts within the society, and (4) to allocate resources of the society.

In simple, homogeneous societies there seems to be widespread agreement on the values that underlie solutions to these social requirements. But complexity implies a measure of diversity of interests and values. Consensus cannot be taken for granted, for solutions that benefit one set of interests may have detrimental effects on another. Questions arise to challenge the assumption that there is a common interest and that universally satisfying solutions to problems can be devised: Whose interests need protection from external threats? Whose norms provide the basis for order? Whose interests are served in conflict resolution? Who gets what in resource allocation? Order at which price? Because people at different positions in the social order tend to offer different answers to such questions, choices among alternatives are necessary.

It is obvious, then, that control of the apparatus through which these decisions are made and implemented is of crucial import. The essence of political process is the struggle between individuals and groups with different interests to gain the decision-making power. Power refers to the ability of an individual or group to have its will carried our even in the face of opposition to it. In terms of political functions it means being in a position to determine the answers to questions issuing from social complexity that concern whose interests and values are to be addressed.

Conflict and functional theorists differ in their conceptions of political power. Functionalists assert that only through some concentration of power can collective goals be achieved. They view the state apparatus as a mechanism for accomplishing these positive goals. Conflict theorists, on the other hand, view the state as serving the ruling economic class and see its function as maintaining the dominance of this class.

What is the main topic of this passage?

A.The conception of the political institutions.

B.The difference between conflict and functional theorists.

C.The different positions the people stand in the racial order.

D.The development of political institutions.
