Vice President Dick Cheney questioned presumptive Democratic nominee John Kerry's record on defense, while the head of the Democratic Party fired back at the vice president.

In a speech in Missouri, Vice President Cheney said Senator Kerry had a habit of supporting cuts in the defense and intelligence budgets, including weapons programs that are now essential in the war on terrorism.

"In his years in Washington, Senator Kerry has been one vote out of 100 in the United States Senate and fortunately on matters of national security, he was usually in the minority," he said. "But the presidency is an entirely different proposition. The president always casts the deciding vote and the senator from Massachusetts has given us ample grounds to doubt the judgment and attitude he brings to bear on vital issues of national security."

听力原文:American names are written and spoken with tile given name first real the family

听力原文: American names are written and spoken with tile given name first real the family name last. So John Smith's family name is Smith, not John.

In a formal setting, address men as "Mister", married women as "Misses", mad unmarried women as "Miss". These days many women prefer to be addressed using the abbreviations "Ms. ", pronounced "miz". If the person has an M.D. or Ph.D., they will often be addressed as "Doctor". Faculty are addressed as "Professor".

In an informal situation, Americans will introduce each other by their first name, without titles, and occasionally by just their last name. If you are introduced to somebody by their first name, you can address him or her by their first name the next time you meet. The only exception would be for someone who holds an important position, such as the university president. Unless they tell you otherwise, faculty should be addressed using their title and last name.

When in doubt, use tile formal manner of address, since it is better to make mistakes on the side of formality. It is always appropriate to ask how they prefer to be addressed.

Children should always address adults in the formal fashion, using their rifle and last name.

(23)

A.Family name first, given name last.

B.Given name first, family name last.

C.Middle name first, family name last.

D.Given name first, middle name last.

听力原文: Last April, American businessman Dennis Tito reportedly paid between twelve-million and twenty-million dollars to spend one week on the International Space Station. NASA had strongly objected to the Russian plan to permit a civilian on the costly research vehicle. After two years of negotiations, space officials have agreed on a process to train private citizens to take trips to the International Space Station.

NASA recently agreed to conditions that will permit Russia to sell trips to the space station. An American company called Space Adventures Limited of Arlington, in Virginia plans the trips. Experts say the change in policy at NASA shows a new desire to use space vehicles for business and industrial purposes. In a speech to Congress last year, NASA official Michael Hawes said that the space agency had not considered civilian travel as one of the industries it wanted to develop. However, Mister Hawes said that private space travel could now be done as long as safety measures are observed carefully.

Candidates for adventure space travel trips must be in excellent health and must pass difficult health tests. They must receive a lot of training. However, Special English can help you prepare for a space holiday. This is because all successful candidates who wish to travel to the International Space Station must be able to read and speak English.

(30)

A.Because it welcomes t a big sum of money by tourist

B.Because it thinks that safety measures are followed carefully.

C.Because Russia agrees, too.

D.Because the spaceship is available.
