听力原文:W: You are working for a financial institution described as being poor in public
image, and highly politicized.

M: I think it's a little bit extreme. I think it's a very important institution, and has played a very important role.

W: Doing what?

M: Doing what nobody else is willing to do at such a moment when countries are in difficulties, which is to give them the financial resources to get out of a difficult joint, or maybe give that country the support, the financial support that the market is not willing to do.

W: You've been criticized for getting governments to stop spending money on their poor people, on their education, health care, and stuff like that.

M: Well, I think that's an unfair accusation. The fund finds a country that has so much public deficit and public debt that doesn't get credit in the market. So it's not that this program against poverty or that program to construct a road is unfunded, it's that the whole budget is unfunded. And when we decide that, of course, wages of public servants, construction of infrastructure, money dedicated to social problems, all of them suffer, but not because of the fund decision, but because of the situation. I accept that at some moments specific decisions that we have made maybe could have been better, sure.

What institution is the man work for?

A.A bank.

B.A research centre.

C.A financial institution.

D.A multinational corporation.

It came as something of a surprise when Diana, Princess of Wales, made a trip to Angola in
1997, to support the Red Cross's campaign for a total ban on all anti-personnel landmines. Within hours of arriving in Angola, television screens around the world were filled with images of her comforting victims injured in explosions caused by landmines. "I knew the statistics," she said, "But putting a face to those figures brought the reality home to me: like when I met Sandra, a 13-year-old girl who had lost her leg, and people like her. "

The Princess concluded with a simple message: "We must stop landmines. " And she used every opportunity during her visit to repeat this message.

But, back in London, her views were not shared by some members of the British government, which refused to support a ban on these weapons. Angry politicians launched an attack on the Princess in the press. They described her as "very ill-informed" and a "loose cannon" (乱放炮的人).

The Princess responded by brushing aside the criticisms: "This is a distraction (干扰) we do not need. All I'm trying to do is help. "

Opposition parties, the media and the public immediately voiced their support for the Princess. To make matters worse for the government, it soon emerged that the Princess's trip had been approved by the Foreign Office, and that she was in fact very well-informed about both the situation in Angola and the British government's policy regarding landmines. The result was a severe embarrassment for the government.

To try and limit the damage, the Foreign Secretary, Malcolm Rifkind, claimed that the Princess's views on landmines were not very different from government policy, and that it was "working towards" a worldwide ban. The Defense Secretary, Michael Portillo, claimed the matter was "a misinterpretation or misunderstanding. "

For the Princess, the trip to this war torn country was an excellent opportunity to use her ,popularity to show the world how much destruction and suffering landmines can cause. She said that the experience had also given her the chance to get closer to people and their problems.

Princess Diana paid a visit to Angola in 1997 ______.

A.to clarify the British government's stand on landmines

B.to establish her image as a friend of landmine victims

C.to investigate the sufferings of landmine victims there

D.to voice her support for a total ban of landmines

A little more than a century ago, Michael Faraday, the noted British physicist, managed to
gain audience with a group of high government officials, to demonstrate an electro-chemical principle, in the hope of gaining support for his work.

After observing the demonstrations closely, one of the officials remarked bluntly, "It's a fascinating demonstration, young man, but just what practical application will come of this?"

"I don't know," replied Faraday, "but I do know that 100 years from now you'll be taxing them. "

From the demonstration of a principle to the marketing of products derived from that principle is often a long, involved series of steps. The speed and effectiveness with which these steps are taken are closely related to the history of management, the art of getting things done. Just as management applies to the wonders that have evolved from Faraday and other inventors, so it applied some 4, 000 years ago to the workings of the great Egyptian and Mesopotamian import and export firms ... to Hannibal's remarkable feat of crossing the Alps in 218 B.C.with 90, 000 foot soldiers, 12, 000 horsemen and a "conveyor belt" of 40 elephants ... or to the early Christian Church, with its world-shaking concepts of individual freedom and equality.

These ancient innovators were deeply involved in the problems of authority, division of labor, discipline, unity of command, clarity of direction and the other basic factors that are so meaningful to management today. But the real impetus to management as an emerging profession was the Industrial Revolution. Originating in 18-century England, it was triggered by a series of classic inventions and new processes, among them John Kay's Flying Shuttle in 1733, James Hargreaves' Spinning Jenny in 1770, Samuel Crompton's Mule Spinner in 1779 and Edmund Cartwright's Power Loom in 1785.

The anecdote about Michael Faraday indicates that______.

A.politicians tax everything

B.people are skeptical about the values of pure research

C.government should support scientists

D.he was rejected by his government

in charge of credit control. What do you suggest?

FC: Well, rye been looking at our payment terms, in other words how long we have to wait for payment, we must reduce the average delay in payment. It's nearly 45 days now from the date we send out the invoice. We've got to get it down to near 30 days. It's not easy. The Sales people always argue it is better to wait for payment rather than lose a customer, but I think we can tighten up on reminders, statements and so on.

MD: What about our payments to suppliers?

FC: Well, that's more difficult. We are a small firm dealing with large suppliers. They don't have to help us. Still, maybe one or two of our older suppliers could give us better payment terms.

MD: Right, let's look at some more general cost cutting measures we can take. I'm interested in support services such as training and personnel development.

PM: Look, I must say something here. We simply mustn't cut these services. They are our long term investment in people.

MD: Maybe, but we've got to reduce costs some- how. We can't cut in the production area. I...

PM: True, but our training budget is already very limited. Most of the training programmes are long term.

MD: I’m not saying we have to stop any existing programmes, but perhaps we should look carefully at future training courses.

PM: Well, I can let you have details of what we plan. I think you'll see that they are all worth- while investments.

MD: I'm sure. Anyway, let me have the programme and we'll discuss it later. We'll have to stop now. I’ve got another meeting at 2.

PM: I must go too. I've got a meeting straight away.
