M: It’s not a bad idea but I have been there three times and this time I really want to try something new.

W: Well, it seems you already have some ideas, right?

M: Actually my wife and I are eager to go to Korea and you know during this period of time the cost will be nearly the same as that of going to Yunnan.

W: Wow! Fantastic! You can have an absolutely marvelous time in Disney Land in Seoul. That’s where I want to go most!

听力原文:A: Come in Sharon and take a seat.

B: Thanks.

A: So, where do we start? Should we begin with a look at last year and then go on from there?

B: Fine

B: Overall, I think I've done quite well. I feel quite confident now about what I do.

A: And are you happy with your duties?

B: Well, the job is exactly as it was advertised in the paper, so there have been no surprises. I like dealing with customers and I don't mind answering the phone and preparing invoices. Sometimes it's a bit boring typing long price lists, but then everyone has to do it.

A: That's true Does anything make your job difficult?

B: The computer. To begin with, I was slow because I didn't know the program, but now I get annoyed when the computer just stops working for no reason. I often sit looking at the monitor for minutes, not sure whether it is still working or not. I think the network is too old for our software and we need some new machines.

A: But apart from the computer, is there anything else you would like to change?

B: Erm, let me see. rd like the authority to issue credit notes without having to ask you first. You're often away on business and sometimes customers ring up with a complaint. And if we can't contact you, then we can't deal with the complaint properly. It's a bit embarrassing at times.

A: Yes, but some of our customers always find something wrong and try and get a credit note with every order. You can't believe everything they say, you know. What about your objectives for the future?

B: Well, I need to get to know the customers a bit better and maybe try to make fewer mistakes. But I think the most important thing is to increase my product knowledge, so I don't get embarrassed when customers make enquiries.

SECTION B INTERVIEW

Now listen to the interview.

听力原文:Gu: Good morning. I' m Dr. Gu from the Seismology Bureau of China.

Exhibitor: Delighted to meet you, Dr. Gu. My name is Schmidt.

Gu: Glad to meet you, Mr. Schmidt. I' m interested in a computer system for one of our laboratories. We have a 16 bit minicomputer at present, but we want to move up to a 32 bit system.

Exhibitor: I have just the system for you, Dr. Gu. Would you like to step up here and see what we have? We have been designing and manufacturing, computer system components, memory subsystems and disk systems for the last 15 years. Recently we have produced one of the first next generation systems for the incredibly low price of US$9,999.

Gu: What is its performance like?

Exhibitor: Our latest model, the Universal 68, is able to break the 1 MIPS performance barrier.

Gu: MIPS ?

Exhibitor: Millions of instructions per second. Its memory capacity is 256 kbytes; The computer is also designed to accommodate future growth in processing power and can meet the needs of a wide range of applications, from robotics to commercial data systems.

Gu: Would you mind giving me a demonstration?

Exhibitor: My pleasure. Would you take a seat just here, please? You are now sitting in front of a state-of-the-art 32 bit Universal 68. Notice the relatively small size of the unit compared to other 32 bit systems. The software is also quite light and portable.

Gu: Could you point out the different components to me?

Exhibitor: Of course. In front of you is the Central Processing Unit, or CPU for short. This provides the computer with arithmetic, logical and control capabilities.

Gu: What are the input units?

Exhibitor: There is a range of input units: punch-cards, magnetic tapes, teletypewriter, telephone--with touch-tone dial, and an on-line typewriter. The output units are much the same with the addition of microfilm. One of the most popular features of this machine is the concept called "pipes". Pipes allow the output of one program to be used as the input to another program, without the need for intermediate disk files.

Gu: To tell you the truth, I' m a bit out of my depth. I've only had the chance to glance at your brochure and get a very rough idea of the workings of this machine. But I must admit that I am impressed by what you have shown me so far. You have already mentioned the price. What are your other terms?

Exhibitor: Well, madam, I will be equally straightforward with you. We provide standard hardware and software products, which means that you have a variety of suppliers to choose from. Secondly, we offer generous discounts on quantity purchases. The more you buy, the bigger the discount. We also offer further discounts if you continue to buy software from us. And, if at any stage you need a specially designed program, we will be more than happy to take care of that for you, too.

Gu: What about spare parts and repair? We're had many problems with these in the past.

Exhibitor: We provide both services free of charge within the first 12 months after delivery of the system. I' m afraid we don't have an office in Beijing as yet, but we do hope to establish one there in the near future. If you have any trouble at ail with the system, we will send an engineer and spare parts to you on the same day we receive your complaint.

Gu: Your terms are quite generous. Of course, I cannot decide immediately. I must first send a telex to our management committee.

Exhibitor: When can you expect to get an answer?

Gu: Within a day or two. I will certainly let you know by Thursday at the very latest. In the meantime, can you give me any further printed

A.To have a talk with exhibitor.

B.To purchase a lab.

C.To discuss the possibility of negotiation with the Universal Computers Ltd..

听力原文:W: Hello, Gary. How're you?

M: Fine! And yourself?

W: Can't complain. Did you have time to look at my proposal?

M: No, not really. Can we go over it now?

W: Sure. I've been trying to come up with some new production and advertising strategies (19). First of all, if we want to stay competitive, we need to modernize our factory. New equipment should've been installed long ago(20).

M: How much will that cost?

W: We have several options ranging from one hundred thousand dollars all the way up to half a million.

M: OK. We'll have to discuss these costs with finance.

W: We should also consider human resources. I've been talking to personnel as well as our staff at the factory.

M: And what's the picture?

W: We'll probably have to hire a couple of engineers to help us modernize the factory(21).

M: What about advertising?

W: Marketing has some interesting ideas for television commercials.

M: TV? Isn't that a bit too expensive for us? What's wrong with advertising in the papers, as usual?

W: Quite frankly, it's just not enough anymore(22). We need to be more aggressive in order to keep ahead of our competitors.

M: Will we be able to afford all this?

W: I'll look into it, but I think higher costs will be justified. These investments will result in higher profits for our company (22).

M: We'll have to look at the figures more closely. Have finance draw up a budget for these investments.

W: All right; I'll see to it.

(23)

A.The benefits of strong business competition.

B.A proposal to lower the cost of production.

C.Complaints about the expense of modernization.

D.Suggestions concerning new business strategies.

听力原文:M: Here is the summer vacation again. It seems that there is no new place in our
country for me to travel. W: I have an idea to make good use of our vacations. We have benefited from the society but done nothing in return. Do you want to do some local voluntary work for the society this year? M: Sounds interesting. What do you think we should do? W: Im not sure. Maybe we could offer help in the hospital for handicapped children. We could help feed the children and help look after them. M: Excellent! But Im not sure if we will be allowed to do that. I think all helpers there have to be specially trained. And we are not in the related major. W: Yeah, maybe you are right. I still have the idea of doing something for children, havent you? M: Well, maybe. And I think many old people also need help. What else did you have in mind for children? W: My other idea was to do something for the small primary school down the street. That school is too poor to provide a playground for the pupils. Children cannot do without one. Ive noticed that some land round the back of the school is not used. We could make it into a small playground. What do you think? M: Mm, its a good idea, but you are a bit too ambitious. I dont know anything about making playgrounds. And I also think that it might be too expensive to do what you suggest. W: Yes, I guess youre right. We cannot afford the big project unless someone sponsors us. Its impossible for us to find such a person. So what do you have in mind for older people? M: I think we should go round to the homes of older people and ask if there is something we can do in the house — you know, like a bit of simple decorating, washing the clothes, cleaning up the garden, even doing some shopping for them once a week. W: Mm, this sounds meaningful and practical. I quite like the idea. It wont cost us any money and Im sure we are capable of dealing with the things you mentioned. Questions 9 to 12 are based on the conversation you have just heard. 9. What are the two speakers arrangements for the coming summer vacation? 10. What can we learn about the woman from the conversation? 11. Why cant they make a playground for the pupils? 12. What are the possible identities of the two speakers?9.

A.She likes handicapped children very much.

B.She wants to do something for children.

C.She prefers children to old people.

D.She thinks a cheap playground can work for pupils.
