M: 1,000 pounds, Madam.

W: It's for my mother-in-law as her birthday gift.
M: Probably too small for your mother-in-law. How about this one? It's bigger.
W: What size is it?
M: It's size sixty.
W: Yes, it's big enough. It's the right size for my mother-in-law. What's it made of?
M: It's made of wool. And the price is 750 pounds.
W: What do you think of it?
M: Well, it looks perfect on you, Madam. But will your mother-in-law like it?

M: I'd like to return this sweater for a refund. I bought it a week ago.
W: Well, what seems to be the problem?
M: Isn't it obvious by just looking at it? The first time I washed and dried it, the thing shrank at least five sizes.
W: I see what you mean, but did you follow the washing instructions? I think it says here ... right here on the label to hand wash it and then to dry it on low heat.
M: How was I supposed to know that? The label is written in Chinese! And something else i The stitching is coming undone and the color faded from a nice dark blue to a seaweed green.
W: Listen, sir. What I can do is allow you to exchange the sweater for another one.
M: I don't want to exchange it for anything! I just want my money back!
W: Well, I can give you credit on your next purchase, and since the item you purchased was on clearance, we can't give you a refund. Anyway, you can only return items with a receipt within six days, and unfortunately, that was yesterday in your case.
M: But, your store was closed yesterday because of the national holiday. Listen, I give up. Your store policies are completely unreasonable, and how do you expect people to shop here?
W: You did... Ha, ha...
M: Take your sweater. You should open up a pet store and sell it as a dog sweater.
What is among the reasons why the man wants to return the item?
A.It is the wrong size.
B.The fabric is coming apart.

W: Not the first time, Stan. The first time we came here we sat over in the comer by the window.
M: I remember now. Of course, we were over there by the window. I remember that night.
W: Oh, Stan, you're thinking of other times after we got married. That first night Marrio was away with the Flu, don't you remember, and we got the young waiter, Trevor.
M: Oh, yes. Trevor was the one with glasses and black teeth. And he had a stutter, didn't he? You were doing your best not to laugh.
W: What a memory! No, Stan, Trevor was the dark-haired, tall boy with the very deep voice, the one you said would make a good singer.
M: Did I? Strange, how I've forgotten that. There you were, across the table, in that lovely, long dark red dress of yours, with that golden handbag.
W: Oh, Stan, you are impossible! I've never had a dark red dress, not a long one anyway, or a golden handbag. That night I had a green dress on and my handbag was brown.
M: Oh yes, yes, yes. But there's one detail that I do remember clearly. You had a golden belt on.
W: No, Stan. The belt I wore that night was brown like the handbag.
M: Oh, dear, I'm not doing very well, am I? I know why I'm not, though. I was so... so excited that I probably didn't notice your clothes.

Passage Two
One day I was at the airport waiting for a ticket to New York and the girl in the ticket office said, "I'm sorry, I can't sell you a ticket. Our computer is down."
"If your computer is down, just write me out a ticket."
"I can't write you out a ticket. The computer is the only one allowed to do so."
I looked down on the computer and every passenger was just standing there staring at the black screen. Then I asked her, "What do all you people do?'
"We give the computer the information about your trip, and then it tells us whether you can fly with us or not."
"So when it goes down, you go down with it."
"That's good, sir. '
"How long will the computer be down?" I wanted to know.
"I have no idea. There's no way we can find out without asking the computer."
After the girl told me they had no backup (备用) computer, I said. "Let's forget the computer. What about your planes? They're still flying, aren't they?"
"I wouldn't know," she said, pointing at the dark screen. "Only 'IT'knows. 'It'can't tell me.
By this time there were quite a few people standing in lines. The word soon spread to other travelers that the computer was down. Some people started to cry and still others kicked their luggage.

In the event that you are forewarned of a possible accident, you should put your hands on your ankles and keep your head down until the plane comes to a complete stop. If smoke is present in the cabin, you should keep your head low and cover your face with napkins, towels, or clothing. If possible, wet these for added protection against smoke inhalation. To evacuate as quickly as possible, follow crew commands and do not take personal belongings with you. Do not jump on escape slides before they are fully inflated, and when you jump, do so with your arms and legs extended in front of you. When you get to the ground, you should move away from the plane as quickly as possible, and never smoke near the wreckage.
According to the experts, when should travelers read and listen to safety instructions?

Sun and Skin Cancer
When Ellen was a teenager, she loved to be out in the summer sun. She ran, she worked in her garden. She would swim and sit by the pool for hours soaking up the sunshine. And she never got tired of hearing people tell her how great her tan looked.
As Ellen got older, she continued to spend lots of time outdoors in the sun. By the time she was in her forties, Ellen's skin had developed a weathered look, with small creases(褶皱) and wrinkles. That was okay, but she also began to notice brown patches developing on her face and hands. Ellen saw a doctor and found out she had a relatively mild case of skin cancer. Ellen was lucky. Her cancer was detected early. With early treatment, she was completely cured. But Ellen began—late in life to pay for all those years she had spent in the sun. Ellen isn't unusual. The athletic, bronzed bodies we see in magazine ads and TV commercials constantly tell the idea that a good tan means health, attractiveness, and fun. The result is that many people believe those ads. And they spend a lot of time in the sun—often just trying to get tan. That golden or bronze color may look nice, hot skin doctors know that sitting in the sun until you are baked several shades darker is not such a hot idea.
According to the National Cancer Institute, over 400,000 Americans can expect to get some form. of skin cancer this year. Most of these people will be 40 or older. However, skin cancer—especially skin cancer caused by exposure to the sun—can often take many years to develop. So it's never too early to protect yourself in the sun.
What's a tan?
As soon as warm weather arrives, lots of people who don't already have dark skin want to start working on their tans. But a tan isn't really nature's way of making you look gorgeous. A tan is your skin's defense against the sun's ultraviolet(UV) radiation. UV rays damage skin cells. So when you decide to have a marathon roasting session in the sun, cells in your skin called melanocytes(黑色细胞) go to work overtime. They produce an extra supply of melanin(黑色素), the brown/black pigment(色素) that gives your skin its color. That extra melanin makes your skin darker, and that's why you "tan".
Think of your tan as a shield of melanin your body produces to block out the UV radiation. The problem is, it is a weak shield at best. There's no way for your body to protect itself fully against the sun's harmful rays—especially if you expose yourself to the sun hour after hour, clay after day, year after year. As you get older, the buildup of many hours in the sun means more of a chance for skin damage and possibly skin cancer.
This skin damage takes two general forms. Some UV attacks supporting cells in the lower layer of the skin, called the dermis(真皮). That causes skin to get dry, tough, and wrinkled. Even more serious is the damage the sun's UV rays can do to the DNA of skin cells. DNA is the genetic blueprint that cells use to reproduce. With Damaged DNA, the skin may produce mutated(使变异,突变)cells that start to grow in an uncontrolled way: skin cancer.
Nature gives you a clue about how much sun is enough by the color of your skin. If your skin is light, you don't have much built-in protection against the sun. You probably tan very little, if at all. So be very careful in the sun.
If you have dark skin and dark hair, you can probably stand a bit more sun exposure. Just don't be fooled into thinking you can stay out in the sun indefinitely. You can't. People with dark skin also get sunburned and can suffer skin damage. It just takes a bit longer for the damage to show up.
Types of skin cancer
The three most common types of skin cancer are all connected with exposure to the sun. The most common of these is basal cell carcinoma. Basal cancers often look like waxy, pearly growths or red, scaly patches. They appear most often on the
