W: Hello, welcome to "Advice" radio program, what's your name?

M: Jim.

W: What's your problem?

M: Er...well I'm er...beginning to lose my hair. Er, 1 went to the doctor, but he just said there was nothing I could do about it. He said it was probably hereditary. My father was bald by the time he was thirty.

W: And how old are you?

M: Me? I'm twenty-eight.

W: And are you losing a lot of hair then?

M: Well, it comes out a lot when I comb my hair and you can see a thin part on the top of my head.

W: Does that really worry you, Jim?

M: Well, I don't like it. It's old, you know, looks old. I don't want to look like a middle-aged man at twenty-eight. And I wonder if there is some special shampoo I should use, and if you could tell me one that I should buy, something like that, you know, to stop it getting worse.

W: Well, you know, Jim, to be honest with you there's not really a lot you can do about it, actually, I'm afraid. I mean, baldness is one of those things that, in my experience, you just have to try to accept. Some men find it more difficult to accept baldness than others. There is one piece of advice, though, Jim, and that's don't try to comb your hair over the bald or thin patch. Whatever you do, don't comb it over because that usually looks ridiculous. And the other thing that usually looks ridiculous is a man with a wig, that is, the false hairpiece. Don't let anyone persuade you to buy one of those false hairpiece things, because they usually look much worse than a bald man. I actually think bald men can look very attractive. My husband is bald and I think it really suits him.

(23)

A.It's hereditary.

B.The shampoo he used caused it.

C.He combs his hair too much.

D.He is old enough to lose hair.

听力原文:M: Cigarette?

W: No, thank you. I've given up, you know.

M: Oh.

W: It's ten days ago. Haven't had one.

M: Well, you don't mind if I had one.

W: Well, all right, then... Oh my goodness! That's a terrible cough.

M: No, no, it's not. It's only... I only get it first thing in the morning.

W: That's going to make you very unfit, you know.

M: No, it's all right. It goes in a minute.

W: Why don't you try and give up?

M: Oh, no. I ought to, but I can't. It relaxes me, smoking.

W: Really?

M: It does.

W: Well, have you ever thought of just cutting down?

M: Oh, no, that's all vey well but?.. I wouldn't enjoy it. I depend a bit on my smoking. I must say.

W: You should do it gradually. I mean... well, if you tried... have you thought of just giving up one day?

M: Yes, oh well, yes, that is quite a good idea.

W: It is.

M: But I think I'd lose count or something.

W: Oh dear! Well, it might be an idea if you started eating sweets.

M: Oh no, I couldn't do that. I couldn't possibly...

W: Why?

M : Well, it makes you fat.

W: Well, do you think that matters? Don't you think it is better to be fat than to be unhealthy?

M: No, I don't. I' d rather be fat... Well, I' d rather be thin than fat, certainly.

W: Oh dear. Well. Hey! I've got a good idea!

M: What's that?

W: Why don't you go to a hypnotist? My sister did!

M: Oh, look, you don't seem to realize that I like smoking. If I gave it up, if I didn't smoke at all, I'd probably end up attacking people!

听力原文:M: Hi, I heard you are looking for a different apartment.

W: Yeah, the place I am in is really terrible.

M: It was OK when I was there.

W: The boiler keeps breaking and when it does, we lose the heat for several days at the time.

M: Why does not the owner replace it?

W: Well, she said it's cheaper to keep fixing it. She is a nice enough person, just sort of stingy in any case. I'm sick of being cold.

M: Can you get your deposit back if you move?

W: If 1 give a 2-month notice, I can get the whole thing back.

M: So what kind of place are you looking for?

W: I think I'll try to get into one of those high rises near the university. There is nothing really special but at least they are new and functional.

M: I heard those buildings are pretty noisy. The walls are thin and you can hear everything going on in the other apartment.

W: Oh, that will never do. I need some place quiet to finish my thesis. I guess I'll have to look at some more ads. Maybe new isn't necessarily better.

M: Why don't you try some of those apartments at Windsor? They're supposed to be nice.

W: Oh, aren't they awfully expensive?

M: Not really. The problem with being out there is that the bus doesn't run that way.

W: That definitely won't be a problem. I can afford a car right now.

What is wrong with the woman's current apartment?

A.It is too noisy.

B.The walls are too thin.

C.The buses do not go in that direction.

D.The boiler often goes wrong.

听力原文:M: Pardon me, are you waiting in line for class registration?

W: Yes, I am. I think everybody in this line is as well.

M: I can't believe it! This line is huge. When I first walked up, I was hoping this wasn't for registration. How long have you been waiting?

W: About twenty minutes. It seems like the line goes pretty fast, but it's a long line.

M: I'll say!

W: I've watched a bunch of people who had been waiting in front of me leave. I guess they got disgusted and finally gave up. One couple said they had waited an hour and a half when they walked by.

M: Oh great! Do you have any idea why there are so many people?

W: I think the problem might be that the deadline as tomorrow. If you think it's had today, I bet tomorrow will be much worse.

M: I hope they don't close before we get to the front of the line.

W: I do too. I tried to use the automated telephone process to register, but it wasn't working right. That's probably another reason why the line is so long today. Last semester I registered for all of my classes over the phone.

M: Yeah, I've used that system before too, but I don't have a credit card anymore so I have to pay in person.

W: I don't know if that would have helped you very much. Apparently there were people who spent the night out here waiting to be first in line this morning.

M: That's really terrible. I can imagine somebody doing that for a concert, but just to register for classes it shouldn't be that difficult.

W: I know it, but I need to be in school this semester, so if that's what it takes, I'll do it.

(20)

A.They didn't have a credit card.

B.They couldn't want anymore.

C.They had spent the night in the line.

D.They felt ill.

听力原文:M: I've just been reading this amazing article about genetic engineering. The things they can do now.

W: I know. It's frightening, isn't it?

M: No, not a bit. I mean if we can produce fruit that doesn't rot, animals that eat less and produce more, what's so scary about that? W: OK. But you know those new microorganisms that they are producing. Well, you only need a laboratory accident and the effects would be far more disastrous than AIDS, for instance.

M: Why are you always so negative? )Soon I'll be able have a genetic screening done and they'll be able to tell me what diseases I'm likely to have.

W: OK. But what if they tell you you're going to have a disease for which there's currently no known cure?

M: If I know it's hereditary then I might think twice before having any children.

W: They can take a piece of someone's hair now and tell you all about that person's medical life. Now that could be an incredible invasion of someone's privacy.

M: How do you mean?

W: Look. So at your job interview they ask you for a piece of hair, ring you up ten days later or whatever and tell you they don't want to employ you because you've got such and such a disease and you might die in five years.

M: Don't be absurd.

W: I'm not being absurd.

M: Do you think people would let them get away with that, huh? What is all this? It sounds like you've been reading 1984. Why don't you look you on the practical side of things for a change?

What are the man and the woman talking about?

A.Genetic engineering.

B.Genetic screening.

C.Genetic food.

D.Eugenics.
