ton, a panel of prominent economists examined the business outlook and concluded that U.S. productivity growth will slow and that the economy itself is unlikely to regain the fast growth rates of the 1990s.

Harvard University professor Dale Jorgenson said, with the collapse of the high-tech bubble in the stock market, the U.S. economy is reverting to the slower growth rates of the period 1973 to 1995. In the boom years from 1995 to 2000, the U.S. economy grew by about five percent annually. That high growth. said Professor Jorgenson, was fueled by enormous gains in productivity that are unlikely to return.

Voice: So, 2.78 is the figure going forward for about the next decade. In other words, we’re not going to have an acceleration of economic growth, contrary to what Alan Greenspan (central bank governor) may say in his testimony to the Senate Banking Committee only two weeks from today. That’s not going to happen. It is something that it is just totally outside the range of possibilities, even under the most optimistic assumption about productivity and capital deepening.

Now the U.S. economy growth rate is______.

A.higher than 1995 to 2000

B.lower than 1973 to 1995

C.as good as 1995 to 2000

D.the same as 1993 to 1995

ANSWER SHEET.

Engineers are developing a new type of Internet connection that could carry so much data so quickly it might surprise even Net surfers. This technology would open up a route through which data can be sent at speeds thousands of times faster than what’s possible now. If all goes to plan, the vast data speeds may soon be available to all. That might help solve the problem of how to handle the enormous growth in Internet traffic. The technology would require some new software and fiber-optic links to the PC,but otherwise no change in basic facilities.

听力原文:W: You are an expert on urban problem. Mr. Cross. I wonder how you would describe
the characteristics of these enormous cities.

M:The first point to make is that they are different from large cities in Europe and America.

W:Surly all large cities are essentially similar.

M:It's true that all large cities experience similar problems provisioning housing and services, but the difference lies in the time factor.

W:Surly some of the cities we are considering are just as old and, in some cases, much older, than cities in the United States, for instance.

M:Very true, but the large cities of Europe and the United States grew relatively slowly. London had a population of more than a million at the beginning of the nineteenth century and this number of more than eight million. And this growth was parallel to industrial growth throughout the country. The same is true of New York, for example.

W:But this is not true of Mexico city or Buenos Aires?

M:No,it is not. Throughout Latin America and in parts of Asia, cities have grown much faster than industry,or agriculture for that matter. Some of these cities have quadrupled in size in less than two decades, while industrial growth over the same period may have only reached thirty to forty percent.

W:What does this mean?

M: Essentially the population growth is not equal to the number of employment opportunities. Much of the increase is due to immigration from the countryside, a movement of people in search of better conditions.

(20)

A.The tourist and the guide.

B.The student and the teacher.

C.The reporter and the urban expert.

D.The worker and the manager.

Passage 2When you think about the growth of human population over the last century or so,

Passage 2

When you think about the growth of human population over the last century or so, it is all too easy to imagine it merely as an increase in the number of humans. But as we _1_, so do all the things associated with us, including our livestock. At present, there are about 1.5 billion _2_ and domestic buffalo and about 1.7 billion sheep and goats. With pigs and poultry, they form. a _3_ part of our enormous biological footprint upon this planet. Just how enormous was not really _4_ until the publication of a new report, called “Livestock’s Long Shadow,” by the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations. Consider these numbers. Global livestock grazing and feed production use “30 percent of the land surface of the planet.” Livestock—which consume more food than they _5_—also compete directly with humans for water. And the drive to expand grazing land destroys more biologically sensitive land, rain forests _6_, than anything else. But what is even more striking, and _7_, is that livestock are responsible for about 18 percent of the global warming effect, more than transportation’s _8_. Greenhouse gases, such as methane and nitrogen, are resulted from their digestion. Grazing land, which destroys forests, adds to the effect. There are no easy trade-offs when it comes to global warming—such as cutting back on livestock to make room for care. The human _9_ for meat is certainly not about to end anytime soon. As “Livestock’s Long Shadow” makes clear, our health and the health of the planet depend on pushing livestock production in more _10_ directions.

第10题
It is often claimed that nuclear energy is something we cannot do without. We live in a co
nsumer society where there is an enormous demand for commercial products of ail kinds. Moreover, an increase in industrial production is considered to be one solution to the problem of mass unemployment. Such an increase presumes an abundant and cheap energy supply. Many people believe that nuclear energy provides an inexhaustible and economical source of power and that it is therefore essential for an industrially developing society. There are a number of other advantages in the use of nuclear energy. Firstly, nuclear power, except for accidents, is clean. A further advantage is that a nuclear power station can be run and maintained by relatively few technical and administrative staff. The nuclear reactor represents an enormous step in our scientific evolution and, whatever the anti-nuclear group says, it is wrong to expect a return to more primitive sources of fuel. However, opponents of nuclear energy point out that nuclear power stations bring a direct threat not only to the environment but also to civil liberties. Furthermore, it is question able whether ultimately nuclear power is a cheap source of energy. There have, for example, been very costly accidents in America, in Britain and, of course, in Russia. The possibility of increases in the cost of uranium in addition to the cost of greater safety provisions could price nuclear power out of the market. In the long run, environmentalists argue, nuclear energy wastes valuable resources and disturbs the ecology to an ex tent which could bring about the destruction of the human race. Thus if we wish to survive, we cannot afford nuclear energy. In spite of the case against nuclear energy outlined above, nuclear energy programs are expanding. Such an expansion assumes a continual growth in industrial production and consumer demands. However, it is doubtful whether this growth will or can continue. Having weighed up the arguments on both sides, it seems there are good economic and ecological reasons for sources of energy other than nuclear power.

The writer's attitude toward nuclear energy is ______.

A.indifferent

B.tolerant

C.favorable

D.negative
