Friendly Relations with the People Around

1 You depend on all the people closely around to give you the warm feeling of belongingness (归属) that you must have to feel secure. But, in fact, the members of all the groups to which you belong also depend on you to give that feeling to them. A person who shows that he wants everything for himself is bound (一定的) to be a lonely wolf.

2 The need for companionship is closely related to the need for a sense of belongingness. How sad and lonely your life would be if you had no one to share your feelings and experiences. You may take it for granted that there always will be people around to talk to and to do things with you and for you. The important point, however, is that keeping emotionally healthy does not depend so much upon having people around you as upon your ability to establish relationships that are satisfying both to you and to them.

3 Suppose you are in a crowd watching a football game. You don't know them. When the game is over, you will all go your separate ways. But just for a while you had a feeling of companionship, of sharing the feelings of others who were cheering for the team you wanted to win.

4 An experience of this kind gives the clue (线索) to what companionship really is. It depends upon emotional ties of sympathy, understanding, trust, and affection. Companions become friends when these ties are formed.

5 When you are thrown in a new circle of acquaintances (熟人), you may not know with whom you will make friends, but you can be sure that you will be able to establish friendships if you show that you really like people.

第5题
When I come across a good essay in reading newspaper, I often feel like cutting and keep i
t. But just as I am about to do so I find the article on the opposite side is as much interesting. It may be a discussion of the way to keep in good health, or advice about how to be oneself in society. If I cut the front essay, the opposite one is bound to suffer damage, leaving out half of it or keeping the text without the subject. As a result, the scissors would stay before they start, or halfway done. when I find out the result that inevitably(不可避免地) causes my regret. Sometimes two things are to be done at the same time, both, deserving your attention. You can only take up one of them, the other has to wait or be given up. But you know the future unpredictable (不可预见的 )--the changed situation may not allow you to do what is left behind. Thus you are caught in a fix and feel sad. How come that nice chances and brilliant ideas should gather.around all at once? It may happen that your life changes dramatically on your preference of one alternative to the other.

In fact that is what life is like: we are often faced with the two opposite sides of a thing which are both desirable like newspaper cutting. It often-occurs that our attention is drawn to one thing only after we take up another. The former may be more important than the latter and give rise to a divided mind. I still remember a philosopher' s(哲学家) remarks: "When one door shuts, another opens in life. " So a passive choice may not be a bad one.

Whatever we do in our lifetime, wherever life' s storm makes us go, there must be something we can achieve, some shore we can land on. Don' t forget God always keeps an alternative door open for everyone. While the front door is closed, there must be another open door for you.

The main idea of this passage is ______.

A.where there' s a will, there's a way

B.cutting newspapers gives us a lesson

C.all roads lead to Rome

D.an equal chance is provided for everyone

第7题
One of the teachers rewards is that he is using his mind on valuable subjects. All over th
e world people are spending their lives either on doing jobs where the mind must be kept numb(麻木的)all day, or else on highly rewarded activities which are tedious. One can get accustomed to operating an adding-machine for five and a half days a week, or to writing advertisements to persuade the public that one brand of cigarettes is better than another. Yet no one would do either of these things for its own sake. Only the money makes them tolerable. But if you really understand an important and interesting subject, like the structure of the human body or the history of the two World Wars, it is a genuine happiness to explain them to others, to welcome every new book on them, and to learn as you teach. With this another reward of teaching is very closely linked. That is the happiness of making something. When the pupils come to you, their minds are only half-formed, full of black spaces and vague notions and over simplifications. You do not merely insert a lot of facts, if you teach them properly. It is not like injecting 500 C. C. of serum(血浆), or giving a years dose of vitamins. You take the living mind, and mould it. It resists sometimes. It may lie passive and apparently refuse to accept anything you print on it. Sometimes it takes the mould too easily, and then seems to melt again and become featureless. But often it comes into firmer shape as you work, and gives you the incomparable happiness of helping to create a human being. To teach a boy the difference between truth and lie in print, to start him thinking about the meaning of poetry or patriotism, to hear him hammering back at you with the facts and arguments you have helped him to find, sharpened by himself and fitted to his own powers, gives the sort of satisfaction that an artist has when he makes a picture out of black canvas and chemical colorings, or a doctor when he hears a sick pulse pick up and carry the energies of new life under his hands.

What makes people tolerant of tedious jobs is______.

A.the job itself

B.the money

C.the significance of the job

D.the fact that it can keep the mind numb

Do you know how to deal with money troubles for the future? Here is some useful advice for
people with money worries.

1. Compulsive deposits(强制储蓄): Force yourself to take 15 to 20 percent of your monthly income and put it in a separate bank account. This won't upset your life a great deal and will give you a good number of rewards in several years'time.

2. Separate "wants" from "needs": In keeping your accounts, list different items in two different columns. Check what you need and what you want, meaning things you may not necessarily need.

3. Avoid shopping with friends: You may only buy one blouse when you are shopping alone, but you may also pick up a skirt and a pair of shoes or maybe a luxurious(奢侈的) dinner and two hours of Karaoke if you are with someone.

4. Avoid using credit cards: Bring along only a limited amount of money when you go shopping and spend no more than what you have planned.

5. Find substitutes: Many people rush out to shop when they want to release some pressure. But, a good book or an interesting movie might be just as good a relief. It takes time to change the habit, but it pays off if you try.

6. Enjoy investment: By investing we do not mean in a car or home electronic device. Joining an English training course might be another form. of investment.

B.people feel worried how much money they will have in the future

C.people don't know clearly how to save their money
