听力原文: The first reality TV show in the world was called Expedition Robinson and it was shown in Sweden in 1997. Half the population of the country watched the final event and a new kind of TV program was born. Two years later in Holland, the first series of Big Brother was filmed. Again, it was a great success and the final program was watched by 15 million people. Now more than 20 countries around the world have Big Brother or Expedition Robinson on their TV screens. The ordinary people who take part in the programs are known by millions of people in their own countries and reality TV has become big, big business.

For the TV producers, reality TV is a dream which come true because many of the programs cost nothing to make. At some point, the television viewers are asked to telephone the program to vote or to apply to take part in the show. It is the cost of these telephone calls that pays for the shows. One of the most popular shows is Pop Idol. In the show a group of attractive young people are made into pop stars. TV viewers vote for their favorite person on the show. The winner makes a record and millions of copies of the record are sold. His or her pictures are published on the covers of magazines or on the front pages of newspapers, and then, they are quickly forgotten.

But not everyone is happy about reality TV. In Portugal, two TV channels got into trouble because they showed too much of the personal lives of the people in the shows. In France, reality TV is called "rubbish TV" and the TV studios of Big Brother were attacked three times in one week. In Greece, Big Brother was described as "against human rights and civilization".

听力原文:Robert Goddard, American physicist and rocket scientist, once said that the dream

听力原文: Robert Goddard, American physicist and rocket scientist, once said that the dream of yesterday is the hope of today and the reality of tomorrow. It was his scientific work that gave hope to many of our dreams about space and then turned them into reality.

Robert Goddard's many studies and tests in the early 1900s led to the first rocket. Then he developed rockets with more than one engine. Each engine pushed the rocket higher and higher out of Earth's atmosphere. His ideas are still used today. So, in a way, every rocket that flies today is a Goddard rocket.

Robert Goddard was far ahead of his time. He developed and flew many rockets that got their power from solid fuels. Then, in 1925, he made and tested the first rocket engine using a soft chemical fuel. In 1926, he successfully fired the world's first liquid-fuel rocket.

Robert Goddard died in 1945 of cancer. He was sixty-three years old. He received a special honor many years after his death. In 1959, the United States established the Goddard Space Flight Center near Washington, D.C. The Goddard Space Flight Center honors the man whose work proved that machines could travel out of Earth's atmosphere, into space.

(23)

A.An airplane designer.

B.A science fiction writer.

C.The inventor of rockets.

听力原文: In science the meaning of the word "explain" suffers with civilization's every step in search of reality. Science cannot really explain electricity, magnetism, and gravitation; their effects can be measured and predicted, but of their nature is no more known to the modem scientists than to Thales who first looked into the nature of the electrification of amber, a hard yellowish-brown gum. Most contemporary physicists reject the notion that man can ever discover what these mysterious forces "really" are. Electricity, Bertrand Russell says, "is not a thing, like St. Paul's Cathedral; it is a way in which things behave. When we have told how things behave when they are electrified, and under what circumstances they are electrified, we have told all there is to tell." Until recently scientists would have disapproved of such an idea. Aristotle, for example, whose natural science dominated western thought for two thousand years, believe that man could arrive at an understanding of reality by reasoning from self-evident principles. He felt, for example, that it is a self-evident principle that everything in the universe has its proper place, hence one can deduce that objects fall to the ground because that's where they belong, and smoke goes up because that's where it belongs. The goal of Aristotelian science was to explain why things happen. Modem science was born when Galileo began trying to explain how things happen and thus originated the method of controlled experiment that now forms the basis of scientific investigation.

(33)

A.To explain why things happen.

B.To explain how things happen.

C.To describe self-evident principles.

D.To support Aristotelian science.

听力原文:W: Bob, Have you seen any movies recently?

M: Yes, I've seen a few.

W: Have you noticed any people smoking in the movies?

M: I wasn't paying special attention to that, but I am sure I saw some actors and even actresses smoke in movies.

W: The World Health Organization says young people are likely to think smoking is a good thing if they see actors smoke, and that cigarette companies use movies to sell more tobacco, especially to young people.

M: That's true. Mass media may have some negative effects on viewers.

W: Now, people are calling for moviemakers to remove cigarettes from their films.

M: Do you think it's necessary? Movies reflect social reality, after all. If the actors never smoke in films, the films may seem unreal.

W: You know, the W-H-O estimates that tobacco kills five million people a year, and that number is growing.

M: That's terrible, but do you think we can attribute it solely to the movies or to other media as well?

W: At least partly. In many countries, including India and the United States, it is illegal to try to sell tobacco on television.

M: But it is legal to show smoking and cigarettes in the movies.

W: Yes, it is reported that tobacco companies even give famous actors a free lifetime supply of cigarettes. These actors often have good-looking bodies. That makes young people think smoking will be good for their health.

M: Too bad. That's really misleading.

W: Sure, perhaps, a law should be passed that there shouldn't be too much smoking in mass media.

M: Absolutely.

(23)

A.Movies play an important role in persuading young people not to smoke.

B.Movies fail to reflect social reality and need improvement in this respect.

C.Movies are in many ways competing with TV to gain young viewers.

D.Movies partly contribute to the increasing number of young smokers.
