听力原文: Many of the early settlers in the new world came to America seeking religious freedom. One of the best known of these groups was the pilgrims who settled at Plymouth Massachusetts in the winter of 1620.

In fact the American national holiday "Thanksgiving" celebrated each November dates back to the pilgrims first year when they held a feast in thanks for surviving that first brutal winter. The pilgrims came to America on hoard the May Flower.

The story of the May Flower actually begins long before the ship set sail in 1620 more than a decade before, when members of a puritan sect that opposed the Elizabethan established church in England fled persecution in their homeland for refuge in the Netherlands. This group of about 100 pilgrims eventually settled in Lyden where their congregation tripled. But although they lacked the religious and civil autonomy they needed for their spiritual purity and growth. So in 1616 they decided to move to America where under English protection, they hoped to establish a profitable fishing and trading post in the colony of Virginia.

A.1616.

B.1620.

听力原文:M: Who came up with the idea of Father's Day?

W: Her name was Sonora Louise Smart Dodd and she lived in Spokane, Washington. Sonora was the oldest of six children raised by their father, William Jackson Smart, when their mother died during childbirth. M: Why June?

W: In 1910 Sonora chose June 19th, as the day to celebrate Father's Day because that was her father's birthday. With support from the Spokane Ministerial Association and the YMCA, the first Father's Day was celebrated in Spokane on June 19, 1910.

Thanksgiving Day is the most truly American of the national holidays in the United States and is most closely connected with the earliest history of the country.

In 1620, the settlers, or Pilgrims, sailed to America on the May Flower, seeking a place where they could have freedom of worship. After a two-month voyage, in icy November, they landed at what is now Plymouth, Massachusetts.

During their first winter, over half of the settlers died of starvation or epidemics (流行病). Those who survived began sowing in the first spring.

All summer long they waited for the harvests with great anxiety, knowing that their lives and the future of the colony depended on the coming harvest. Finally the field produced a yield rich beyond expectations. And therefore it was decided that a day of thanksgiving to the Lord be fixed. Years later, President of the Unites States decided the fourth Thursday of November as Thanksgiving Day every year. The celebration of Thanksgiving Day has been observed on that date until today.

The pattern of the Thanksgiving celebration had never changed through the years. The big family dinner is planned months ahead. On the dinner table, people will find apples. oranges, chestnuts and grapes. There will be pudding, mince (肉馅) pie, other varieties of food and cranberry (蔓越橘) juice and squash (柠檬汁). The best and most attractive among them are roast turkey and pumpkin pie. They have been the most traditional and favorite food on Thanksgiving Day throughout the years.

From the passage, the Pilgrims sailed to America in order to______.

A.seek a place for freedom of worship

B.seek for food

C.seek for the new land

D.avoid starvation and epidemics
