They can meet their future mates in many different ways. Sometimes they are introduced by a mutual friend; mid sometimes they meet each other in school, at a party, or at work. Today, they are sometimes matched by a computer which acts as a mechanical matchmaker, The average age of marriage for women in the United States is 20 - 21 and for men 22 - 23. When they are ready to get married, the bride's family is supposed to pay for all the cost of wedding, the reception, and the bride's trousseau. All the groom is supposed to pay for is the marriage license, the wedding ring, and the bride's bouquet.

A couple must get a civil license to marry, and then they can be married either in a civil or a religious ceremony. After the marriage ceremony, there is often a reception and then the couple leaves on their honeymoon. When they return, the newly married husband and wife move into their own home.

听力原文:Marriage is still a popular institution in the United States, but divorce is beco

听力原文: Marriage is still a popular institution in the United States, but divorce is becoming almost as "popular". Nevertheless, most American people get married at the present time. Fifty percent of American marriages end in divorce. However, four out of five divorced people do not stay single. They get married a see6nd time to new partners. Sociologists tell us that in the next century, most American people will marry three or four times in one lifetime. Alvin Toffler, an American sociologist, calls this new social form. "serial marriages". In his new book Fortune Shock, Toffler gives many reasons for this change in American marriage. In modern society, people's lives don't stay the same for very long. Americans frequently change their jobs, their homes, and their circle of friends. So, the person who was a good husband or wife ten years ago is sometimes not as good ten years later. After some years of marriage, a husband and wife can feel that their lives have become very different, and they don't share the same interests any more. For this reason, Toffler says, people in the twenty- first century will not plan to marry only one person for an entire lifetime. They will plan to stay married to one person for perhaps five or ten years, and then marry another. Most Americans will expect to have a "marriage career" that includes three or four marriages.

(30)

A.Marriage that continues for many years without divorce.

B.Marriage that can easily end in divorce.

C.People will marry three or four times in one life-time.

D.Divorced people don't stay single.

听力原文: Colleges and universities are degree-granting institutions of higher education.I

听力原文: Colleges and universities are degree-granting institutions of higher education. In the original sense of the word, a college was a group of students who gathered to share academic and residential facilities. Each college was a component part of a corporate body called a university. Today, especially in the United States, a college may be affiliated with a university (for example, Bernard College of Columbia University) or independent (for example, Smith College).

American undergraduates traditionally have been required to take general survey courses before they specialize in major areas of concentration; the undergraduate program generally is four years, and each year is split into two or three semesters. After receiving a bachelor of arts (BA) or a bachelor of science (BS) degree, those who want additional education enroll in programs leading to a master of arts (MA) or a doctor of philosophy (Ph.D) degree or study at a medical, law, or other professional or technical graduate school at the same or another institution.

In contrast, European students begin their higher education with specialized studies because their general education is completed in secondary school. In general, European universities have no prescribed courses, attendance requirements, or course grades. Students may attend lectures, but do their work directly with tutors who prepare them for examinations. Programs may be completed in two or six years.

15.What was the original meaning of the word "college"?

16.When do American students begin to specialize in their major?

17.When do American students begin to study at professional or technical graduate schools?

18.In what way is European higher education different from US higher education?

(35)

A.A degree-granting institution of higher learning.

B.A group of students sharing academic and residential facilities.

C.A component part of a large corporate body.

D.An institution affiliated with a university.

听力原文:W: You are working for a financial institution described as being poor in public
image, and highly politicized.

M: I think it's a little bit extreme. I think it's a very important institution, and has played a very important role.

W: Doing what?

M: Doing what nobody else is willing to do at such a moment when countries are in difficulties, which is to give them the financial resources to get out of a difficult joint, or maybe give that country the support, the financial support that the market is not willing to do.

W: You've been criticized for getting governments to stop spending money on their poor people, on their education, health care, and stuff like that.

M: Well, I think that's an unfair accusation. The fund finds a country that has so much public deficit and public debt that doesn't get credit in the market. So it's not that this program against poverty or that program to construct a road is unfunded, it's that the whole budget is unfunded. And when we decide that, of course, wages of public servants, construction of infrastructure, money dedicated to social problems, all of them suffer, but not because of the fund decision, but because of the situation. I accept that at some moments specific decisions that we have made maybe could have been better, sure.

What institution is the man work for?

A.A bank.

B.A research centre.

C.A financial institution.

D.A multinational corporation.
