听力原文: Twice a year, all the clocks in the United States are changed by one hour. In the spring, clocks are moved ahead an hour. This is called daylight savings time. In the fall, clocks are set back an hour to standard time. People remember how to change their clocks by remembering this saying: Spring forward, fall back. It seems Benjamin Franklin was the first person to propose the idea of daylight savings time back in the 1790s. At the time, people thought he was joking. They couldn't believe he was serious. Many years later, during World War I, people realized what an innovative idea he'd had. In the spring and summer, the sun rises earlier. By moving the clock ahead, people can take advantage of the extra daylight and save energy. Energy is an important resource, of course, especially during wartime. The United States operated on daylight savings time during World War I and again during World War II. After that some parts of the country observed daylight savings time and some didn't. Beginning and ending dates varied from place to place. This confusion ended in 1966, when the Congress passed the Uniform. Time Act, standardizing the process and making daylight savings time a federal law. Since then, some lawmakers have proposed that the United States go to year-round daylight savings time.

(36)

A.The Uniform. Time Act.

B.The role of daylight savings time in wartime.

C.Ways to save energy.

D.The history of daylight savings time.

听力原文: There're more than 40 universities in Britain—nearly twice as many as in 1960. During the 1960s eight new ones were founded, and ten other new were created by converting old colleges of technology into universities. Mean- while the number of students more than doubled. By 1973 about 10% of men aged from eighteen to twenty-one were in universities and about 5 %of women. All the universities are private institutions. (12) Each has its own governing councils, including some local businessmen and local politicians as well as a few academics. The state began to give grants to them fifty years ago, and by 1970 each university derived nearly all its funds from state grants. Students have to pay fees and living costs, but every student may receive from local authority of the place where he lives a personal grant which is enough to pay his full costs, including lodging and food unless his parents are rich. (13) Most students take jobs in the summer holiday, but they don't normally do outside work during the academic year. (14) The Department of Education takes responsibility for the payment covering the whole expenditure of the universities, but it doesn't exercise direct control. It can have an important influence on new developments through its power to distribute funds, but it takes the advice of the University Grants Committee, a body that is mainly composed of academics.

A.More than 40.

听力原文:M: Are you looking forward to your trip to Canada?

W: I can't wait to see Canada, but I'm scared stiff of the journey. My husband insists on flying, but I want to sail. Planes make me nervous.

W: I've no idea. Hundreds, I suppose.

M: And how often do you hear of a crash? ... Once or twice a year?

W: Yes, but planes fly so high and fast that once is enough.

W: I'd still prefer to go by sea. Ships may not travel fast but at least you can relax; I'd love a trip on a luxury liner like the Queen Elizabeth Ⅱ.

M: It's fine if you are a good sailor, but have you ever traveled far in a rough sea?
