Viruses Find New Ways to Worm into Computers

Just when you thought you knew a computer virus or worm when you saw one, several new infections that may fool you are gaining momentum on the Internet.

Most e-mail viruses require the victim to double-click open an infected attachment before they can wreak their havoc. But Badtrans-B and Atiz, two worms that were spreading quickly over the weekend and Monday, can launch themselves automatically when the recipient views or even just clicks on the subject line of an infected e-mail message using Microsoft's Outlook and Outlook Express programs. October's Nimda virus used a similar technique, which helped it spread further and faster than it otherwise might have. Computer users were safe from viruses as long as they didn't download programs from the Internet or open e-mail attachments. But these days, viruses are as capable of getting into computers as Santa Claus is at getting down chimneys.

Antivirus software maker McAfee, a division of Santa Clara, Calif.'s Network Associates, upgraded Badtrans-B to a high-risk virus for consumers. Vincent Gullotto, director of McAfee's virus lab, said the worm is infecting more home users than corporate networks.

To prevent these and other viruses from automatically launching themselves, Gullotto advised down loading a software patch from Microsoft at www. microsoft, com.

Badtrans-B and Aliz have shown up with many different subject lines, ranging from the low key "info" to "Fw: Funky pictures -- check it."

Meanwhile, a worm called SirCam is still popping up regularly in e-mail boxes, months after it was first discovered. SirCam takes a Microsoft Word document from an infected computer and e-mails it out with a message reading "I send you this file in order to have your advice."

Gullotto attributed SirCam's staying power to social engineering. SirCam takes the title of the Word file as its subject line, which means the virus might arrive labeled anything from "blJsiness plan" to "diary." It is those sometimes-intriguing subject lines that entice people to open SirCam-laden attachments and spread the virus, Gullotto said.

To protect against all of these viruses, experts advise that computer users install antivirus software and regularly update it from the company's Web site.

What does the author means by saying "gaining momentum on the Internet"?

A.becoming more and more serious.

B.being the most important moment.

C.having the bigger and bigger impetus.

D.gaining more velocity and weight.

The US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) is taking steps to protect the country's blood supply. People give blood to the centres, where it is kept until it is needed for medical purposes.

The FDA has provided new rules for the blood centres. The government agency says new rules are designed to improve the blood supply system.

The new rules call for blood centres to develop more ways to make sure their work is done correctly.

These rules are another way to help keep the blood supply pure. A leading concern is that someone with AIDS virus might give blood to a blood centre. For this reason, there are tests to find out if blood contains viruses that cause AIDS and other diseases.

The passage discusses the aim of______.

A.the organization.

B.blood centres in the USA

C.FDA new rules.

D.AIDS prevention.

听力原文: Good morning, everybody. Now last week we were looking at the positive effects that computers have had on our society. This week I'd like to talk about one of the negatives, computer viruses.

OK. So what is a computer virus? Well, it is a software program that has been designed, tested and released by a human programmer with the single intention of corrupting and destroying useful programs. Put in simple terms, it's a way of causing lots of trouble for ordinary people, just to be a nuisance! It's known as a virus because, although it's not a biological organism, it functions in a similar way, in that it seeks out a host; that is, a body, in which to live and multiply--your computer--with the end result of destroying that host.

Let's go back 50 years. In 1949 in the early days of computer technology, John Van Neumann presented the first model of a computer virus program in his paper "Theory and Organization of Complicated Automata". Soon after this paper was published, we find reference to a game known as "Core Wars". Core Wars was initially created for intellectual entertainment by three Americans working on large mainframe. computers. Remember, in those days computers were the size of a couple of rooms. By the 1980s for the small sum of $2.00 postage anyone could get details on how to play "Core Wars" and very soon after, we see the emergence of a new pastime; one where people spent time creating programs that could escape the game and destroy other programs. In this way, the first computer viruses were born.

Like their biological counterparts, computer viruses are picked up through casual habits. Virus programs are often intentionally placed within useful programs in the public domain, or they're included in software which is not official--that is software that you might have acquired on tile black market, which, of course you don't do!

It seems quite hard to believe that anyone would go to this level of deceit to intentionally corrupt the data of others, but the rise in the number of computer software infections, and the amount of lost data that we are seeing these days, is proof that these virus programmers are going to extremes to do just that. They are going out of their way to create programs that hide inside legitimate software applications and cause all sorts of errors that the average end-user will then mistake for hardware failure---in other words they will think that the problem lies with their own computer.

So, what can we do to combat these people? Well, the first thing is to realize that virus programmers succeed because people are not always careful about where they get their programs from. So, number one, be very careful. And I don't just mean that you should be careful about the source of your software, you also need to take care with E-mails and avoid any messages which are suspicious-looking. For instance a message that says "I love you" or "Win $50". So the second golden rule is "avoid trouble". Now there are other things we can do to protect ourselves. We can try to find out exactly how the viruses work, how they accomplish their aims--in other words, we need to understand them.

And, of course, there is a good selection of anti-virus software available on the market now as well as on the Internet to combat the virus plague, so another way of protecting ourselves and our computers is to be well prepared. And before I leave you, let me just say that if you ever run into one of those virus guys, tell them what you think of them!

Thursday January 11, 2007

The Guardian1. British scientists are preparing to launch trials of a radical new way to fight cancer, which kills tumours by infecting them with viruses like the common cold.

If successful, virus therapy could eventually form. a third pillar alongside radiotherapy and chemotherapy in the standard arsenal against cancer, while avoiding some of the debilitating side-effects.

Leonard Seymour, a professor of gene therapy at Oxford University, who has been working on the virus therapy with colleagues in London and the US, will lead the trials later this year. Cancer Research UK said yesterday that it was excited by the potential of Prof Seymour"s pioneering techniques.

One of the country"s leading geneticists, Prof Seymour has been working with viruses that kill cancer cells directly, while avoiding harm to healthy tissue. "In principle, you"ve got something which could be many times more effective than regular chemotherapy," he said.

Cancer-killing viruses exploit the fact that cancer cells suppress the body"s local immune system. "If a cancer doesn"t do that, the immune system wipes it out. If you can get a virus into a tumour, viruses find them a very good place to be because there"s no immune system to stop them replicating. You can regard it as the cancer"s Achilles" heel."

Only a small amount of the virus needs to get to the cancer. "They replicate, you get a million copies in each cell and the cell bursts and they infect the tumour cells adjacent and repeat the process," said Prof Seymour.

Preliminary research on mice shows that the viruses work well on tumours resistant to standard cancer drugs. "It"s an interesting possibility that they may have an advantage in killing drug-resistant tumours, which could be quite different to anything we"ve had before."

Researchers have known for some time that viruses can kill tumour cells and some aspects of the work have already been published in scientific journals. American scientists have previously injected viruses directly into tumours but this technique will not work if the cancer is inaccessible or has spread throughout the body.

Prof Seymour"s innovative solution is to mask the virus from the body"s immune system, effectively allowing the viruses to do what chemotherapy drugs do - spread through the blood and reach tumours wherever they are. The big hurdle has always been to find a way to deliver viruses to tumours via the bloodstream without the body"s immune system destroying them on the way.

"What we"ve done is make chemical modifications to the virus to put a polymer coat around it - it"s a stealth virus when you inject it," he said.

After the stealth virus infects the tumour, it replicates, but the copies do not have the chemical modifications. If they escape from the tumour, the copies will be quickly recognised and mopped up by the body"s immune system.

The therapy would be especially useful for secondary cancers, called metastases, which sometimes spread around the body after the first tumour appears. "There"s an awful statistic of patients in the west ... with malignant cancers; 75% of them go on to die from metastases," said Prof Seymour.

Two viruses are likely to be examined in the first clinical trials: adenovirus, which normally causes a cold-like illness, and vaccinia, which causes cowpox and is also used in the vaccine against smallpox. For safety reasons, both will be disabled to make them less pathogenic in the trial, but Prof Seymour said he eventually hopes to use natural viruses.

The first trials will use uncoated adenovirus and vaccinia and will be delivered locally to liver tumours, in order to establish whether the treatment is safe in humans and what dose of virus will be needed. Several more years of trials will be needed, eventually also on the polymer-coated viruses, before the therapy can be considered for use in the NHS. Though the approach will be examined at first for cancers that do not respond to conventional treatments, Prof Seymour hopes that one day it might be applied to all cancers.

Scientists have established that influenza viruses taken from man can cause the disease in
animals. In addition, man can catch the disease from animals. In fact, a great number of wild birds seem to carry the virus without showing an evidence of illness. Some scientists concluded that a large family of influenza viruses may have evolved in the bird kingdom, a group that has been on the earth 100 million years and is able to carry the virus without contracting the disease. There is even convincing evidence to show that virus strains are transmitted from place to place and from continent to continent by migrating birds.

It's known that two influenza viruses can recombine when both are present in an animal at the same time, the result of such recombination is a great variety of strains containing different H and N spikes. This raises the possibility that a human influenza virus can recombine with an influenza virus from a low animal to produce an entirely new spike. Research is underway to determine if that is the way that major new strains come into being, another possibility is that two animal influenza strains may recombine in a pig, for example, to produce a new strain which is transmitted to man.

According to the passage, scientists have discovered that influenza viruses ______.

A.cause ill health in wild birds

B.do not always cause symptoms in birds

C.are rarely present in wild birds

D.change when transferred from animals to man
