"Is there anything I can do for you?" asked the President.
The soldier obviously didn't recognize Lincoln, and with some effort he was able to whisper. "Would you please write a letter to my mother?"
A pen and paper were provided and the President carefully began writing down what the young man was able to say:
"My dearest mother, I was badly hurt while doing my duty. I'm afraid I'm not going to recover. Don't grieve (悲伤) too much for me, please. Kiss Mary and John for me. May God bless you and father."
The soldier was too weak to continue, so Lincoln signed the letter for him and added, "written for your son by Abraham Lincoln."

Bouncing hack from a serious viral illness that kept her out of last year's tournament, Justine Henin-Hardenne swept passed French contender Mary Pierce in a 6-1, 6-1 victory. Tennis buffs called it the most lopsided victory since Steffi Graf beat Natasha Zvereva in 1988. Henin-Hardenne took nine consecutive games this spring since recovering from her illness. Earlier she overcame US Open champion Svetlana Kuznetsova and Wimbledon winner Maria Sharapova. This year was also something of a comeback for Mary Pierce, who won the French Open in 2000. But a final backhand error into the net cost the 29-year-old the game, giving Henin-Hardenne a fast 62-minute win. Sunday in the men's competition, teenager Rafael Nadal will face unseeded Argentine contender Mariano Puerta.

One of the industrial giants who changed American society was Henry Ford. Born on a farm in Michigan in 1863, he grew up to bring forth some of the most revolutionary improvements in automotive technology in the early 20th century. His outstanding mechanical ability led him to become interested in the new automobiles in the early 1900s. Though he did not invent the automobile, he improved upon everyone else's designs. Ford's personality was not all thrift, efficiency, and ingenuity, however. He was a man who was cold and who could not keep pace with the competition due to his own rigidity. His company suffered because of his desire to maintain the status quo instead of meeting and beating the competition by changing his product. Finally, he saw that he must change or lose out; therefore, he introduced the eight-cylinder engine and once again took over the automobile market. Ford left a legacy of millions of dollars, millions of jobs for American workers, and millions of satisfied customers.

In May 2001, after meeting with staff from the Center for Rural Affairs, the friends -- Louise Guy, Vicky Koch, Jeanette Pinkelan, Mary Rose Pinkelman and Violet Pinkelman -- opened a weekend market for vendors (小商贩) to sell handcrafts and local food.
"We felt like, what can we do to bring the community together?" says Mary Rose Pinkelman. "We decided to make a place to sell local goods." They set up shop in the church school, which, though closed for nearly 40 years, had been well maintained. The first weekend, 16 vendors took over an old classroom. The result was an instant hit. Today, the market draws up to 70 vendors -- who sell such items as homemade jellies, baked goods, hand-woven rugs, and farm-grown produce -- and what Pinkelman calls an unexpected number of visitors. In the process, the market has made St. James a destination again, putting it back on the state road map.
According to Paragraph 1, what fate was St. James, Nebraska suffering ?
A.The replacement of the church.
B.The disappearance from highway maps.
C.The closedown of the bar.
D.The set-up of a market.

You could see it in our games. Nobody organized them. There weren't any competitive sports. But we took part in lots of activities and we were organized, not in the sense that there were wars of finding out who had won and who had lost. We played balls like everyone else, but no one kept scores. Even if we did formally take part in the games we played, no one was a winner though someone may have won. It was only at that moment. If you beat someone by pulling a bow (弓) and arrow (箭) and shooting the arrow further, it didn't mean you were better in any way. It just meant that at that particular time the arrow went further; maybe it was just the way you let the bow go. These kinds of things are very important to me and that is why I am talking about them.
One of the very important things was the relationship we had with our families. We didn't always live at home. We lived wherever we happened to be at that particular time when it got dark. If you were two or three miles away from home, then that was where you slept.
