听力原文: I'd like to start out by telling you how much I appreciate the trophy and the recognition it signifies. I have been with J&B Limited since the beginning, when Jeff and I were just a couple of guys working in a rented garage. We've gone from producing and selling audio recordings of local musicians to being one of the nation's largest and most respected providers of quality entertainment products. We now produce and distribute everything from music to movies and video games. And while I appreciate the honor you're bestowing on me this evening, I want to stress that my success would not have been possible without the hard work and dedication of my wonderful colleagues, many of whom are here tonight. With our success as a company has come responsibility — to our industry, to our community, and most of all to our loyal customers who have contributed to support and purchase our products. I'm looking forward to many more happy years with J&B Limited.

听力原文: For people who want more TV than the regular stations provide, cable TV is available in many parts of the country. To receive cable TV, one must pay a monthly subscription fee. Wires and a special tuner are attached to the TV set to enable the subscriber to receive the cable broad-casts. Cable stations tend to specialize in one type of program. There are stations for sports, movies, music videos, business, health, and the arts. Unlike commercial stations, programs on cable TV are not usually interrupted for commercials.

Many people have criticized television programming. They complain that it does not challenge, the intellect, shows too much violence, and appeals to the least educated of viewers in order to get the largest audience. To a great extent, these criticisms are correct. But there are also many excellent TV programs available for people who are selective for viewing.

Television has become the main source of information and entertainment for the average American. It is estimated that by the time a child reaches 18, he or she has spent almost twice as much time watching TV as in the classroom. Many people are concerned about TV's influence.

News is edited and condensed to fit into two or three minutes per event. Unrealistic family and social situations are portrayed, with all problems easily solved within a half hour, giving the young a distorted view of life. How has TV affected the young people who grew up watching it? Unquestionably, children learn a lot from TV shows, but not all of it is appropriate or positive.

Moreover, many educators believe that American students read and write less well than students of earlier generations because so much of their knowledge has come to them via TV and film rather than the printed word.

Why is cable TV necessary?

A.Because it is the main source of information and entertainment.

B.Because it is a means to educate people.

C.Because it can satisfy people with specialized programs.

D.Because there are no advertisements in between cable TV programs.

Although the American civilization took over and replaced the frontier over a century ago,
the heritage of the frontier is still evident in the United States today. Many people are still fascinated by the frontier because it has been particularly important in shaping American values. For many years, the frontier experience was romanticized in popular movies and television shows that featured cowboy heroes fighting Indian villains. Little attention was given to the tragic story of what really happened to Native Americans. Today, most Americans are more aware of the darker side of the settling of the continent, when thousands of Native American Indians were killed, their lands were taken, and much of their culture was destroyed.

The American frontier consists of the relatively unsettled regions of the United States, usually found in the western part of the country. Here, both land and life were more rugged and primitive than in the more settled eastern part. As one frontier area was settled, people began moving farther west into the next unsettled area, sweeping aside the Native Americans as they went. By settling one frontier area after another, Americans moved across an entire continent, 2 700 miles wide. They came to believe that it was their destiny to control all the land, and eventually they did. The Native Americans were given small portions of land called reservations to control, but the United States government broke many promises and created much misery for the Indian nations.

Recently, Americans have come to a more balanced view of the settling of the West. However, many Americans still see many aspects of the frontier, its people and their beliefs, as good, inspiring examples of traditional American values in their original and purest form. How did the frontier movement, which lasted more than two centuries, help to shape these basic American values?

To be sure, the frontier provided many inspiring examples of hard work as forests were turned into towns, and towns into large cities. The competitive race for success was rarely more colorful or adventurous than on the western frontier. Individualism, self-reliance, and equality of opportunity have perhaps been the values most closely associated with the frontier heritage of America. Throughout their history, Americans have tended to view the frontier settler as the model of the free individual. In the United States, where freedom from outside social controls has traditionally been valued, the frontier has been idealized, and it still serves as a basis for a nostalgic view of the early United States, a simpler time that was lost when the country became urbanized and more complex.

One reason why many Americans are still fascinated by the frontier is that ______ .

A.the frontier area is more civilized and developed than other parts of the country

B.the frontier experience is greatly romanticized in today's popular movies and TV shows

C.the frontier period represents a time when the traditional basic Americans values were expressed in their purest form

D.the lifestyle. of the Native American Indians who live in the frontier area is still mysterious and appealing

The other day I asked a group of my students how they like to learn English. The first person to speak up was Max. This was no surprise—unlike many Hong Kong students, Max has never been reluctant to speak. “I like to learn by speaking,” said Max. “I specially love to speak to native English speakers when I can find them. I try to talk to my friends in English, too. Um, what else? I like to watch TV and movies in English, and I like to learn new words by hearing them.” “How about you?” I asked Veronica. “Do you like to learn in these ways?” “Oh, no,” she said, “I could never learn like that. I need to have a textbook, and I like the teacher to explain everything to me. I have a notebook, and I write everything down. I like to study grammar, and I like to learn by reading. Max says he likes to learn new words by hearing them. I like to learn new words by seeing.” Veronica’s classmate Jackie was more similar to Max. She said she liked to learn by watching movies and videos. She also liked playing games, listening to cassettes, talking in pairs and practicing English outside the classroom. The last person to give his opinion was Joseph. Like Veronica, he liked to study grammar, although he didn’t feel the same need to have a teacher. He liked to learn independently to find his own mistakes, and to read books and newspapers. These four people correspond to four learner “types” that a former colleague of mine, Ken Willing, found in a study he did some years ago. Max can be classified as a “communicative” learner, Veronica as “authority-oriented”, Jackie as a “concrete” learner, and Joseph as an “analytical” one.

A. always speaking in English

B. learning new words by hearing them

C. watching TV and movies in English

D. All of the above.

2.Who likes to learn English by watching movies and videos?()

A. Veronica and Joseph

B. Jackie and Max

C. Jackie and Veronica

D. Joseph and Max

3.What’s the similarity between Veronica and Joseph in learning preferences?()

A. Neither likes to study grammar.

B. Neither likes a teacher to explain what they are learning.

C. Both like to study independently.

D. None of the above.

4.If Nancy likes to learn English by listening to tapes, watching movies, talking to others and playing games, what type does she belong to?()

A. Communicative.

B. Authority-oriented.

C. Concrete.

D. Analytical.

5.What’s the main idea of this passage?()

A. How to find the way you really like to learn.

B. Four different types of English learner.

C. How will the teachers do with the four types of learner?

D. I enjoy teaching my students.

听力原文: If you must know, we writers are not crazy about the evident power of pictures;
at least, not professionally. I don't know how many times rye looked at Hank Walker's famous shot of the Kennedy brothers. I am moved every time, but I always see the same thing. The attraction, I think, has to do with stillness itself. On display as well are actors, mobsters, kids, kings, animals, bombs, eyes, legs, soldiers, winners, losers, us. These are moving pictures that do not move. That in itself may account for one's fascination with them. We live in a world where everything moves: Families and institutions, no less than trains and boats and planes. The very novelty of the still is like a stage whisper. One pays attention because it is as quiet and noticeable as a mouse. A still picture stands still. Movies say," kook at me, watch this." A still says, "Take it or leave it." The picture, like a selfish lover, stands and waits for others to come to it, secure in the appraisal of its own value. It is not as if the subject is stopped in mid-action; rather, it seems that the still is the action.

What was Hank Walker's profession?

A.A writer.

B.A painter.

C.A photographer.

D.A movie director.
