On cold days people in Manhattan like to take their children to PlaySpace, an indoor playg

round full of wonderful climbing and sliding contraptions. There's just one irritating detail: when you pay your money, the cashier pulls out a felt-trip marker and an adhesive label tag and asks you your name.

"Frum, I say. "No, your first name." "What do you need my first name for?" To write on the tag, so all the children and the staff will know what to call you. "In that case, write ' Mr. Frum.'"

At which I am shot a look as if I had asked to be called to Duke of Plaza Toro.

In encouraging five-year-olds to address grownups by their first names, PlaySpace is only slightly ahead of the times. As a journalist, I faithfully report that the custom of addressing strangers formally is as dead as the practice of leaving a visiting card. There's hardly a secretary left who does not reply, when I give a message fro her boss, "I'll tell him you called, David." Or a public relations agent, whether in Bangor or Bangkok, who does not begin his telephonic spiel (长篇大论) with a cheerful "Hello, David !"

You don't have to be a journalist to collect amazing first-name stories. Place a collect call, and the operator first-names you. The teenager behind the counter at a fast food restaurant asks a 70-year-old customer for his first name before taking his order.

Habitual first-names claim they are motivated by nothing worse than uncontrollably high-spirited friendliness. I don't believe it. If I asked the fast-food order-takers to lend me $ 50, their friendliness would vanish in a whoosh. The PR man drops all his cheerfulness the moment he hears I won't go along with his story idea. No, it's not friendliness that drives first-namers; it's aggression. The PR agents who call me David uninvited would never, if they could somehow get him on the phone, address press baron Rupert Murdoch that way. The woman at the bank who called me David would never first-name the bank's chairman. Like the mock-cheery staff at PlaySpace, they are engaged in a smile-faced act of belittlement, an assertion of power disguised as good cheer.

"PR" in paragraph 6 stands for ______.

A.personal request

B.personal respect

C.public relations

D.public review

Warm People Likely to Keep Cold at Bay

Staying positive through the cold season could be your best defense against getting ill, new study findings suggest. In an experiment that exposed healthy volunteers to a cold or flu virus, researchers found that people with a generally sunny disposition were less likely to fall ill.

The findings, published in the journal Psychosomatic Medicine, build on evidence that a "positive emotional style" can help ward off the common cold and other illnesses. Researchers believe the reasons may be both objective as in happiness boosting immune function and subjective as in happy people being less troubled by a scratchy throat or runny nose.

"People with a positive emotional style. may have different immune responses to the virus. " explained lead study author Dr Sheldon Cohen of Carnegie Mellon University in Pittsburgh. "And when they do get a cold, they may interpret their illness as being less severe. "

Cohen and his colleagues had found in a previous study that happier people seemed less susceptible to catching a cold, but some questions remained as to whether the emotional trait itself had the effect.

For the new study, the researchers had 193 healthy adults completes stand, self-perceived health and emotional "style". Those who tended to be happy, energetic and easy-going were judged as having a positive emotional style, while those who were often unhappy, tense and hostile had anegative style.

The researchers gave them nasal drops containing either a cold virus or a particular flu virus. Over the next six days, the volunteers reported on any aches, pains, sneezing or congestion they had, while the researchers collected objective data, like daily mucus production. Cohen and his colleagues found that based on objective measures of nasal woes, happy people were less likely to develop a cold.

According to a study author, when people with a positive emotional style. do get a cold, they may think______.

A.that their illness is very serious

B.that their illness is not so serious

C.that they do not get any illness at all

D.that the illness they get is not a mild one

Water is necessary for life and good health. We often forget this fact when we think about
the other building blocks of life, such as vitamins, minerals and proteins. We can live for many days without eating. However, only two or three days without water usually leads to death.

The human body may look solid, but most of it is water. New-born babies are as much as eighty-five percent water. Women are about sixty five percent water, and men about seventy-five percent. Women usually have less water than men because women, in general, have more fat cells. Fat cells hold less water than other kinds of cells.

Water is necessary for cooling the body on hot days, and when we are working hard or exercising. Water carries body heat to the surface of the skin when the heat is lost through perspiration.

Researchers note that fat cells block body heat from escaping quickly. Fat cells under the skin act like warm clothing to keep body heat inside. This is why over-weight people have a more difficult time staying cool than thin people.

Researchers also note that cold liquids cool us faster than warm liquids. This is because cold liquids take up more heat inside the body and carry it away faster. They say, however, that cold sweet drinks do not work well. The sugar slows the liquid from getting into the bloodstream.

The body loses water every day through perspiration and urine. If we lose too much, we will become sick. To replace what is lost, health experts say grown persons should drink about two liters of liquids each day, and more in hot weather. They say we also can get some of the water we need in the foods we eat. Most fruits and vegetables have more than eighty percent water. Even bread has about thirty-three percent water.

From the passage we learn that among the following four groups of people _______.

A.fat women are over eighty percent water

B.thin men are never eighty percent water

C.new-born infants are over eighty percent water

D.elderly adults are over eighty percent water

听力原文:M: When I say I live in Sweden, people always want to know about the seasons.

W: The seasons?

M: Yeah, you know, how cold it is in winter, what it is like when the days are so short.

W: So what is it like?

M: Well, it is cold, very cold in winter, sometimes as cold as 26 degrees below centigrade. And of course when you go out, you'll wrap up warm. But inside in the houses it's always very warm, much warmer than at home. Swedish people always complain that when they visit England, the houses are cold even in a good winter.

W: And what about the darkness?

M: Well, yeah, around Christmas time there's only one hour of daylight, so. you really look forward to the spring. It is sometimes a bit depressing, but you see the summers are amazing. From May to July, in the North of Sweden, the sun never sets. It's still light in the midnight. You can walk in the mountains and read a newspaper.

W: Oh, yeah, the land of the midnight sun.

M: That's right, but it's wonderful. You want to stay up all night. And the Swedes make the most of it. Often they start work earlier in summer and then leave at about 2 or 3 in the afternoon, so that they can really enjoy the long summer evenings. They like to work hard, but play hard too. I think Londoners work longer hours, but I'm not sure this is a good thing.

Questions 19 to 22 are based on the conversation you have just heard.

19. What do we learn about the man from the conversation?

20. What do Swedish people complain about when they visit England in winter?

21. How does the man describe the short hour of daylight around Christmas in Sweden?

22. What does the man say about the Swedish people?

(23)

A.He likes Sweden better than England.

B.He prefers hot weather to cold weather.

C.He is an Englishman living in Sweden.

D.He visits London nearly every winter.
