听力原文: A U.S. spacecraft is completing a five-and-a-half-month voyage to a distant comet and could create celestial fireworks when it crashes into it Monday, America's Independence Day. Scientists want to know what a comet's nucleus is made of and believe the best way to find out is to blast a hole in one.

The target is the comet Tempel—1,431 million kilometers away. (7) As NASA puts it, meeting its head on at such a gTeat distance is like threading a needle.

(8) NASA scientist Tom Morgan describes a comet as a big dirty snowball in space, a glowing collection of ice, rocks, dust, and gases whose interior composition is intriguing.

Knowing the makeup of a comet would provide information about the chemistry and physics of the solar system as it formed 4.5 billion years ago.

According to NASA, meeting the cosmic's head on from such a great distance is

A.very easy.

B.impossible.

C.possible.

D.very difficult.

hey did not know when.

The Himalayan Mountains were formed some 150 million years ago after the landmass that is now India broke off from Antarctica, drifted north and collided with the rest of Asia.

Scientists say the South Asian land mass is still moving towards North Asia at the rate of about two centimeters a year, making the area prone to earthquakes.

Harley Benz is a researcher at the U.S. Geological Survey earthquake information center. "It's a broad zone of deformation, and across this zone that extends 1,000 kilometers, you have a whole series of faults and folds."

Another earthquake-prone region is along the 1300 kilometer San Andreas Fault in California.

It is here that John Rundle, a physics and engineering professor at the University of California at Davis, is testing his earthquake computer simulation.

According to the news, the current Indian landmass was once part of ______ millions of years ago.

A.Antarctica

B.Africa

C.Australia

D.America

听力原文:M: Professor, bow's Chinese Americans' situation today?

F: There are fewer than half a million, only a small fraction of the U.S. population, living chiefly in California, New York, and Hawaii. But they are generally admired for their many remarkable characteristics, and are often held up as an example worth following.

M: When, then, did things begin to change?

F: It was during World War II, when China was an ally of the United States. The Exclusion laws were ended; in 1965, in a general revision of the immigration laws, many more Chinese were permitted to settle here, as discrimination against immigration was abolished.

M: But it seemed that the Chinese had lived apart in their own separate neighborhoods, which came to be known as "Chinatowns".

F: Right. And in each of them the residents organized an unofficial government to make rules for the community and to settle disputes. To this day, certain Chinatowns, especially those of Francisco and New York, are busy, thriving communities.

M: Professor, there are two facts about the Chinese Americans: one is that there is so little juvenile delinquency among them; the other is that there are so many outstanding scholars, scientists, and artists out of their uneducated laborers ancestors. How can we explain these?

F: Well, we may owe little juvenile delinquency to their retaining many aspects of their ancient culture. For example, their family ties continue to be remarkably strong. Even young children cherish the old values and attitudes, including respect for their elders and a feeling of responsibility to the family. Secondly, the high regard for education which is deeply imbedded in Chinese culture, and the willingness to work very hard to gain advancement, are other noteworthy characteristics of theirs. This explains why so many descendants of laborers have succeeded in becoming doctors, lawyers, and other professionals.

How many Chinese Americans are there in the U.S. today?

A.Less than 500,000.

B.More than 500,000.

C.Less than 5,000,000.

D.More than 5,000,000,

听力原文: The Internet dates back to 1969, when the U.S. Department of Defense decided to build an experimental network to make sure computer-based command in the event of a nuclear attack. As time went by, public and commercial networks in North America and Europe joined the system, and the expanding giant was born.

Until ten years ago, the Internet was actually the private fields of scientists and university students. During recent years, curious private citizens and businesses are crowding onto the Internet at a speed that is doubling its size every year.

Now, computer networks have spread to form. a giant global Web. Some 100 million people from over 140 countries around the world have logged on to the Internet, a system linking tens of thousands of networks filled with information, discussion and entertainment. Millions of Web pages contained in a great number of sites are commonly used to exhibit a mixture of text, graphics, sounds and video clips, as well as links to other Web pages.

On a typical day, data, as much as several million 250-page books, will pour through the Internet. Stored in the system are huge amounts of scholarly and scientific data, government documents and public records, airline timetables, weather reports, the full text of the Bible, and thousands of newspapers and magazines from around the world.

In addition, by creating communities of people sharing common interests, computer networks are making their influence felt in schools, in the business world, in politics and government.

听力原文:Scientists say that most doctors and patients already know what is right for them

听力原文: Scientists say that most doctors and patients already know what is right for them in terms of diet and exercise. The problem is that we have become a nation too focused on treating heart disease and stroke rather than preventing them. Primary-care doctors are constantly in firefighter mode, rushing to the scene of a patient's health disaster, instead of spending the time counseling patients about the best diet and prevention program.

For example, not enough doctors prescribe niacin for their heart patients, even though the medicine is a proven treatment for raising "good" cholesterol. Physicians are reluctant because niacin requires diligent follow-up to watch for side effects, taking time that most primary-care practices cannot afford. On the other hand, too many doctors are performing heart operations that represent a financial windfall for hospitals. Bottom line: There isn't as much money to be made in prevention as in treatment.

We know now better how to use the technology and have a real shot at preventing the nearly one million heart attacks and 700,000 strokes that occur each year in the U.S. It is the use of computed tomography angiography. This is a noninvasive heart scan that takes about 10 minutes and can tell you if you have any developing plaque in the vessels that supply blood to your heart. The trick is to get the test done before you experience any chest pains or other heart problems. Cutting down on that inflammation greatly reduces your chance of having a heart attack or stroke.

(30)

A.More and more people are suffering from heart disease.

B.More and more doctors are focusing too much on diet and exercise.

C.People are ignorant of the prevention of heart disease and stroke.

D.Doctors are more money-pursuing than before.

听力原文: Many animals are used to help scientists find out what will happen to people when they take new drugs. Many chimpanzees are kept in research labs for these experiments.

Chimpanzees look like us, and sometimes even act like us. They are close relatives of ours. That's why some people say that chimps should be treated differently than other laboratory animals when they are no longer needed.

One doctor says "you can't just kill them ...". They shouldn't be put to sleep just because they are no longer needed.

There are 1,500 chimps used for research in the U.S. This is more than we need. One group says we should make sure there are no more baby chimps and provide long term care for the rest.

Scientists were going to use the chimps to study the AIDS virus. The chimps were net a good match and the scientists don't want to pay to keep the chimps.

Many chimps still have 30-40 years to live. Some of the chimps have been given to zoos.

Animal rights groups think chimps should have a natural habitat like the way wild chimps live. They should be with other chimps and be outside everyday. This could cost the government $7 million a year.

Scientists say the chimps are worth it because they have taught us so much about people.

(27)

A.In a jungle.

B.In a laboratory.

C.In a zoo.

D.In a park.

听力原文: A deadly infectious outbreak swept through a small city in Zaire, Africa last spring, killing more than one hundred people. The killer was a rare virus that caused most victims to bleed to death. As scientists rushed to control the outbreak, people in the U.S. wondered "Could it attack here." "We are foolish if we think it couldn't come to our country," say doctors. The virus can be highly infectious. If you come in contact with a victim' s blood or other body fluids, you can get

sick, too. All it takes is one infected person to start such a disease. That' s what scientists believe happened in Zaire. The healthcare workers who treated the first victims there soon fell ill too. The problem was: they had no protective equipment to prevent themselves from being infected. International rescue workers brought equipment to Zaire soon after the out- break occurred. Now the disease appears to be under control. One big mystery is that no one knows where the virus comes from or where it will strike next. Some scientists say that the virus lies inactive in the cells of some kind of plant, insect or other animals, Then it somehow finds a way to infect humans. Scientists are now headed into the jungles of Africa to find out where the virus lives. Once they find the virus, they also hope to find ways to combat it.

(27)

A.Through food.

B.Through air.

C.Through insects.

D.Though body fluids.
