4. The Round Table Knights The Round Table Knights...

4. The Round Table Knights The Round Table Knights were a group of greatest knights who had the honour to sit at the Round Table at King Arthur's court. According to a story, Arthur had a carpenter build the Round Table to show that no knight, not even Arthur himself was "head of the table". All were equal and the king was just "first among equals". The table was so large that it had enough seats for 1600 men and yet could be folded up and carried on horseback. According to another source. Merlin the magician had the table built for Uther, Arthur's father. Uther gave the table to King Leodegan. Later, Leodegan gave the table to Arthur after Arthur married Guenevere, Leodegan's daughter. Still another story says that the Round Table had 12 seats around it, like the table at the Last Supper, with an empty place representing Judas's seat. This seat was called the Siege Perilous, and was reserved for the knight so pure in heart that he would someday find the Holy Grail, the cup or dish used by Jesus at the Last Supper. Any other knight who sat in the seat would die. One day, Sir Galahad's name appeared on the seat. From then on, he occupied the Siege Perilous. Later, as expected, he found the Holy Grail with the other two knights. Knights considered it a great honour to have a seat at the Round Table. Brave men came to Arthur's court from many countries hoping to become a Round Table Knight. Many stories describe the heroic deeds of various Knights of the Round Table. Several tell of the adventures of Sir Tristram and Sir Gawin. Other famous Round Table Knights included Lancelot, Bedevere, Bors, Galahad, Perceval and Modred. The greatest adventure of the Round Table was the search for the Holy Grail. However, only the three knights---Bors, Galahad and Perceval were pure enough to be able to find the Grail. All the others had various moral defects. This fact damaged the reputation of the Round Table. To make things worse, a love affair developed between Queen Guenevere and Sir Lancelot, who was perhaps the greatest of the Round Table knights. This scandal destroyed the bonds of respect and friendship that had united all the knights. The mortal blow to the Round Table was given by Sir Modred, who tried to seize Arthur's power. In a battle between the forces of the two men, Arthur killed Modred but he himself was seriously wounded and soon died. The Round Table broke up following the death of Arthur. 7. How many kinds of story about the source of the Round Table does the passage tell us?

A、One.

B、Two.

C、Three.

D、Four.

The Romance of Arthur

Most cultures have some sort of hero who represents the best values of what its people believe in. The unusual thing about King Arthur is that legends of his heroism have persisted for several centuries and spread far beyond England, the place where they began.

The earliest stories of King Arthur represent him as a warrior who fought and defeated the invading Norsemen in the years around A. D.700. This much of the Arthurian tale is probably based on fact. Whether called Arthur or not, there is a body of evidence supporting the existence of such a warrior. It is the later embellishments (美化) of the tale whose authenticity (真实性) is questionable. According to these, Arthur was born in a castle in Tintagel on the stormy western coast of England and because he was the illegal son of King Uther Pendragon, he was spirited away(拐走) by the magician Merlin and his true identity kept from him. He became king after freeing the sword Excalibur from the stone into which it was thrust. He marred the beautiful Guinevere and assembled in his court all the noblest knights of the land, including Lancelot, with whom Guinevere would later be unfaithful to him. He was finally defeated in battle by his son Mordred.

This romantic tale greatly appealed to the English and the French in the Middle Ages, when the code of chivalry (骑士) -ideal qualities of knighthood-constituted an important part of many stories. Tales of the heroism of Galahad, Percival, Gawain, and many other of Arthur"s knights were spread as well.

In England today, there are many sites claiming a piece of the Arthurian an legend. There is a mined castle at Tintagel. Near Glastonbury are the remains of an ancient abbey where Arthur"s and Guinevere"s bodies were supposedly exhumed in the 12th century. Neither of these proves that the legend is true, but they do keep its mystique alive.

King Arthur‘s father was___________ . 查看材料

A.Lancelot

B.Avalon

C.Mordred

D.Uther Pendragon

Today I am going to tell you something about President Chester Arthur and his civil servic
e reform. Chester Arthur was elected vice-president of the United States in 1880. In the summer of 1881 President James Garfield was assassinated. A few hours after the Presidents death, Chester Arthur took the oath of office. President Arthur had been a successful lawyer and worked in politics for many years, but he had never held an elected office, so in the beginning, some Americans questioned his ability to serve in the White House. President Arthur surprised them; his success in the reform. of the civil service system won him much support from the people. In his first message to Congress President Arthur proposed a new civil service system that would let ability, not politics, decide who got government jobs. The Republican Party leaders opposed this proposal because the civil service system would stop them form. giving federal jobs to their supporters. It would destroy much of their power. These Republican leaders controlled the Congress. They refused to act on the civil service proposal. New cases of dishonesty were discovered in government departments. The public began to demand laws to clean up the civil service. In 1882 a new Congress was elected. The new Congress was controlled by the Democratic Party. President Arthur again appealed for civil service reform. This time he got results. The new Congress passed the Civil Service Bill, which required 10 percent of all federal jobs to be filled through competitive examinations. This 10 percent included most workers at the Federal Customs Houses and half the officials in the Post Office Department. Chester Arthurs efforts for honest government won him much support from the people, but he could not win the support of his own Republican Party. He failed to win the Presidential nomination in the Republican Nominating Convention in 1884. Questions:

Which of the following sentences is True according to the passage?

A.Chester Arthur killed President James Garfield and took the oath of office.

B.Chester Arthur had worked in politics for many years and held an elected office.

C.Chester Arthur was turned down by Congress when he first put forward his proposal for the new civil service system.

D.Chester Arthur was strongly opposed by Congress and the common people after he carried out his civil service reform.

Legends about King Arthur have existed since the 6th century. Stories of the man and his d
oings have grown far beyond anything that could be regarded as factual history. Here are some of the highlights.

Arthur was born as a result of the wizardry of Merlin, who arranged all adulterous liaison between Arthur's father, King Uther Pendragon, and his lover, a married duchess. Merlin agreed to do this only if the lovers allowed him to bring up the child born of the affair. When Uther Pendragon died some years later, there was confusion in the kingdom about who should inherit the throne. Merlin arranged a pageant where many knights came to try their luck at pulling a sword out of a stone. Whoever successfully extracted the blade was the rightful king. After many a brave knight had tried and failed, Merlin presented the young Arthur who, to everyone's surprise, easily pulled out the sword.

As king, Arthur established the knightly fellowship of the Round table at his castle of Camelot, So appear all the other chivalrous knights associated with the king. The knights of the Round Table spent much of their time on the quest for the Holy Grail. The Grail is the cup used by Jesus at the Last Supper, which was allegedly brought to Britain, then somehow lost. It is notoriously hard to get hold of, as finding it requires an almost superhuman degree of moral purity. At last it was the true gentleman Sir Galahad who eventually found it and set off to return it to its rightful place in the Holy Land.

Arthur's death is a matter of some debate. According to legend, one of Arthur's less intelligent moves was his decision to marry the Lady Guinevere, who fell in love with Sir Lancelot, and their adultery Led to war among the knights of the Round Table, culminating in the Battle of Catalan and Arthur's mortal word. After the Battle of Camlan the wounded king was taken to the mysterious isle of Avalon ruled by his sinister Morgan Le Faye. She, being skilled in the arts of witchcraft and healing, was apparently meant to cure him. But evidently Arthur thought he had little chance, because he gave his sword, Excalibur, to Sir Bedivere to return to the Lady of the Lake, an enigmatic character from whom Arthur had originally received the blade. Bedivere hurled the sword over the water, where a spooky hand appeared from the lake to catch it, waved it around for a while and then carried it down to the murky depths where, who knows, perhaps it still lies. As for Arthur, we can only conclude that his sister wasn't such a good doctor.

Arthur became the king because ______.

A.he was the old king's only son

B.he was supported by many brave knights

C.he was the strongest man in the kingdom

D.he pulled the sword from the stone

Nord's Net: "Ways of Knowing" for the Science Classroom

It is apparent that Professor Warren A. Nord has found Eddington's parable of a fisherman's net advantageous in supporting his side of an ongoing discussion about religion and science in school curricula. He has employed the story on a number of occasions in various articles. Readers should not carelessly absorb "Nord's Net," however. Whenever any given allegory finds widespread and frequent employment in intellectual discussion, it deserves some scrutiny -- which is the purpose of this essay.

You may not be familiar with the net parable, so let's have Nord himself acquaint you with the tale. The following is a quote that succinctly summarizes both the parable and Nord's direct application of it. It comes from Taking Religion Seriously Across the Curriculum, by Nord and Haynes.

The astronomer Arthur Eddington once told a parable about a fisherman who used a net with a three- inch mesh. After a lifetime of fishing he concluded there were no fish shorter than three inches. Eddington's moral is that just as one's fishing net determines what one catches, so it is with conceptual nets: what we find in the ocean of reality depends on the conceptual net we bring to our investigation.

For example, the modern scientific conceptual net allows scientists to catch only replicable events; the results of any experiment that cannot be replicated are not allowed to stand. This means that miracles, which are by definition singular events, can't be caught; scientists cannot ask God to replicate the miracle for the sake of a controlled experiment. Or, to take another example, the scientific method requires that evidence for knowledge claims be grounded in sense experience -- the kinds of experience that instruments can measure. But this rules out religious experience as a source of knowledge about the world.

First I will place Nord's premises in the context of how two approaches to human understanding -- science's "replicable events" approach to knowledge, and religion's "miracles and religious experience" approach -- have interacted over the centuries. Maybe later, I will take up the educational ramifications of implementing his premises in public education.

Who is supposed to be the first to use the parable of Nord's Net, according to this passage?

A.Professor Warren A. Nord.

B.The astronomer Arthur Eddington.

C.Some ancient saga.

D.The author of this passage.
