听力原文： The stun total of our knowledge is very small compared to the size of our ignorance. Every advance on the frontier of knowledge opens up a great vista of the unknown. The scientist is not happy except when he finds something new. Science is alt incomplete task just as life is incomplete. He call only be happy because he has the opportunity to continue the search. Fulfillment can never be there so long as knowledge is imperfect.

The search for truth is not a peaceful occupation. The happiest people I have known have not been the men of great wealth achievements or wealth. They have been the simple people who are happily married, enjoying good health and good family life.

I do not think we search for the stars or moon because we make up our minds to do so, but because we can't help ourselves. Imagination is trot an attribute of happiness. A person can be very happy when he knows nothing.

While it is true you can get happiness, peace and serenity from being at the lower end of the ladder, it is also true that you cannot enjoy the ecstasy of achievement. Success in the general sense of the term means the opportunity to experience and to realize to tile maximum the forces that are within us.

It is per- haps worth remembering that less than two centuries ago the dangers of train travel seemed similarly terrible. There are two sorts of radiation man must fear in space. The first is radiation from the sun, and this is particularly dangerous when the sun is very active and explosions are occurring on its surface. The second, less harmful form. comes from the so-called Van Allen Belts. These are two areas of radiation about 1,500 miles away from the earth. Neither of these forms of radiation area is dangerous to us on the earth, since we are protected by our atmosphere. Specifically, it is that part of our atmosphere known as the ozonosphere which protects us. This is a belt of the chemical ozone between 12 and 21 miles from the ground, which absorbs all the radiation.

Once outside the atmosphere, however, man is no longer protected, and radiation can be harmful in a number of ways. A distinction must be drawn between the short-and long-term effects of radiation. The former are merely unpleasant, but just because an astronaut returning from a journey in space does not seem to have been greatly harmed, we cannot assume that he is safe. The long-term effects can be extremely serious, even leading to death.

But insects have developed ways of dealing with them and, in fact, have been eating plants for about 250 million years. Now insects are using these same mechanisms to deal with man-made poisons--insecticides. This is why resistance of insects to insecticides has developed so rapidly.

What should be done？ Scientists studying the problem suggest that farmers use less insecticides. Secondly, farmers could use a combination of two or three insecticides at once. To survive, the insects would need to become resistant to two or more insecticides at the same time.

The most surprising suggestion, perhaps, is that at certain times of the year, farmers should actually try to at-tract insects onto the crops they are trying to protect. The new insects will mate with those which survived from a certain kind of insecticide and will lessen the latter's resistance to it.

Scientist hope that these and other measures will post-pone the day when farmers and scientists will have to stand by while new super-bugs which may be resistant to all poi-sons invade our farms and devour our crops.
