听力原文: The Credit Card in the U. S.
Today, more and more people in the U. S. are using credit cards instead of money to buy what they need. Almost anyone who bas a steady income and a continuous work record can apply for a credit card.
With a credit card, you can buy a car, eat a dinner, take a trip, and even get a haircut by charging the cost to your account. In this way, you can pay for purchases a month or two later. Or you may choose to spread out your payments over several months and pay only part of the total amount each month.. With a credit card , you don’t have to carry much cash and you don’t have to be concerned about losing your money through carelessness or theft. The card user only has to worry about paying the final bill. This of course can be a problem if you charge more than you can pay for.

听力原文: A credit card that only works when it hears its owner's voice has been developed by U. S. scientists. Researchers hope that the device, which comes with a built-in voice recognition chip and microphone, will be a weapon in the battle against credit card fraud. Even if thieves know a card's password and personal identification number, they will still have to copy the owner's voice accurately. The trial-card was created by scientists as B card in California U. S. The first version is three times as thick as a normal credit card. But researchers believe smaller chips will allow the card to slim down to a more conventional size. The card is apparently the first to put a voice recognition chip, a microphone, speaker and a battery into a credit card. To use the card, the owner first presses a button, and hears the prompt: say your password. If the password is correct and spoken by the right person, the card emits an identification signal which is processed by a computer connected to the Internet. Researchers hope to get the card to handle ten transactions per day for two years before its non-replaceable battery runs out.
According to the news, what makes this credit card different from conventional ones is ______.
A.that it can hear the owner's voice.
B.that it can remember a password.
C.that it can identify the owner's voice.
D.that it can remember the owner's PIN.

However, the tide is beginning to turn, and the growth percentage of fraud is diminishing technologies are becoming more widely used. In 1994, Visa card fraud in the U. S. was as new equal to the figure posted in 1992. At Master Card, bogus card transactions rose 14% from 1993 to 1994. Even so, the growth rate has slowed considerably from the beginning of the decade. That looks good news for bankers and for average card holders as well.

听力原文: Credit cards are big business. Americans spend $16 billion a year on cards and there are already 590 millions of them in circulation. Many banks sponsor their own credit card companies and issue cards free to their customers. Other credit card companies charge their members annual dues. The stores that accept credit cards must pay a small fee to the credit card company—a percentage of the purchase price of the merchandise or service. Credit card companies make a profit from the fees they charge the store and also from the fees collected from customers who pay for their charges in monthly installments. However, credit card companies sometimes have problems collecting overdue payments from unreliable customers. Also, the use of stolen, lost or counterfeit credit cards by criminals has become a big headache for the credit card company that is responsible for the goods and services illegally charged to its customer's account.
Yet, in many ways, the big loser in the credit card system is not the credit card company, the store, or the card user, but rather the general customer. The store makes up for the fees it pays to the credit card company by increasing prices for goods and services. Stores may have more sales if they accept cards, but the added cost to the store when credit cards are accepted instead of cash is actually passed on to all customers in higher prices. In this way the cash customer suffers for the convenience the credit card customer enjoys.
